usually what i do is i get an idea, then i flesh it out until i am satisfied with it, then i just leave it on my computer and wait until i want to work on it again. this is something i've tried to get out of doing recently, and instead i just get high and spend all day in my room working on a song. that's what i did with summer's day

I'm a piano teacher too, and I always recommend starting by learning your scales two octaves up and down. Learn how to read treble and bass clef, set plausible goals, and most importantly, keep practicing. It's like lifting, if you half-ass, you'll never get anywhere
