Does anyone have experience with squat stands? Are they terrible?

they're fine. but get a pair with a plate holder on the bottom. you need to weigh these things down to keep them from getting knocked over or out of place when re-racking. if you do wind up with pick related, be sure to put a bunch of sandbags on them to weigh them down. shit can be pretty unsafe when the place you think you're letting the bar down isn't there anymore

Just be really careful when putting the weight back down on the rack. Other than that, it's fine. You could stabilize them with some weights or sandbags like another anon suggested, but it's not 100% necessary unless we're talking about big weight.
