Let's talk about how bad we are at running and why we like to injure ourselves.

What was your recent run?
How'd it feel?
What are your goals?

Recovering from getting fat. Again. Due to myself.

Ran 3.6 today. Old knee injury started to hurt again. Feels good to be back, though. Gonna keep at it.
>>
I'm freaking the fuck out.

I have 1 month left to get a 11 minute 2.4k
Currently I can only run 1 mile in 7 mins 30 secs

I've yet to run more than a mile without stopping. I have been platued at a mile for a while now.

Can someone write me a m/w/f running program that will add half a mile to my run endurance in 30 days?

(The run is tested on a treadmill and I do my running on a treadmill, so I can use that to my advantage)
>>
Today was endurance day. Did 8 miles about 7:20 minute mile pace. Goal is to finish this routine and be running 30 miles per week in three more weeks. Then school starts again and if my depression doesn't sap my energy I will maybe start training for a faster 10k. Currently about 42 minutes, but it shouldn't be hard to get to 36 or a little lower by winter.
>>
>>42334900
Just run more, fag.

Couch to 10k.
>>
>>42333839
>What was your recent run?
It was nice, went on my favorite beach.

>How'd it feel?
Excellent, bit of pain from old injuries but well worth the endorphin rush.

>What are your goals?
I want to run a sub 21 minute 5k, currently I am at 24:13 as a PR.
>>
What is the running equivalent of 1/2/3/4?
>>
Assuming I'm running on a track with mid-foot strike(that's correct, right?), will my knees still explode if I run an hour a day 5 times a week?
I've been doing step (basically running in place) an hour almost every day for more than a year, no injuries.
I've had tendonitis issues when I've tried switch to jumprope(proper form, correct shoes, ect.) a couple of times, so I'm weary of running.

is there a good nonnovice training program from scratch? haven't run in a couple months, but I used to do casual 10+mile runs at 7minutes/mile, and I feel like couch to 5k/such are overreactions on the safety side (I have decent vo2/strength base, and am young and obligation free enough to chance a minor injury)
>>
Went running today. Doing couch to 5k and just completed week 3. I'm 5'6 and 166 pounds. Last 2 sessions my left inner knee was kinda hurting but I still completed the runs. Think it might be cause I don't stretch as much as I should since stretch for like 15 seconds then go. Any other advice (already planning on learning2stretch)?

First run in like a month. Started out slow but my last mile was 6:18 pace.
>>
This is too spooky my fellow runnerfags. I havent been an active runner in 2 years and gained back a lot of weight I lost because of life problems. Started to get back into it a few weeks ago since I have more of a hold on things and naturally I feel like dying. Missed a run on Friday so I went 2 laps around the school campus and managed do do 3.27 miles in 31.39 minutes. Somewhat ok for fattie status but I didnt feel tired but I had to go back in since my trail on campus is closed off at night and a squad car was waiting for the sun to go down.
Tonight I decided to run earlier planning on doing a quick 45 mins. I ran 9.42 miles in 1:48:37 non-stop and I only stopped since it was getting late and im fearing injury. Ive hardly eaten a cup of oatmeal and a peach all day yet ive suddenly decided to try to break previous PRs. My thighs are on fire and I cant leave myseat without shuffling like an old man. Give it to me straight /run/, how injured am I probably going to be? I swear im gonna be regreting this all week. Im not even sure how I managed this.
9.42 miles in
>>42337000
Depends what youre looking for.
Runkeeper is good for recording things like time, distance, pace, and so on plus you can see your GPS route on google maps. It has some decent training programs but the pro edition has a lot more but costs money. So its pretty standard and I cant complain besides some gps hiccups.
C25K/C210K is good for strictly training if youre new and want to learn how to run. You cant really review your progress on the basic edition. You just get a check in the box for each workout finished.
>>
>>42337526
You'll be sore for a few days lol, just take them as rest days and try to relax. I feel like if you fucked something up, you would have felt it during the run.

Need to do a 2.4k in ~11 minutes as per the canadian armed forces guideline before i start BMOQ, have to do a 5k too, since morning PT they might make me do one

On couch to 5k now, my shitty shoes set me back a bit and treadmill fucked me too, gonna go all track now with good shoes
>>
Just started getting back to running after an 8 month hiatus. I can barely run 800 meters without stopping, and my heart rate sometimes goes up to 210 (probably shouldn't have drank a sip before running lmao). My stride rate is 160 spm, which is also dogshit. At least I'm 30 lbs lighter now, so hopefully I'll see some speed gains to my 5k when I'll finally be able to run with a better cadence and without stopping.
>>
>>42334900
Try running slower first, just focus on being able to run a bit more than a mile without stopping, then go back to increasing your speed. The block may partially be mental, you may find it a lot easier to run a mile without stopping the second time.
>>
>>42334900

>>42339191
I'm already consistently faster than when I did 42:00. And that goal would only be about 6:00 per mile and that's my pace for tempo runs. As I keep training them and increasing the time I should be pretty close.

I just want to run a half-marathon without any injuries. Besides that, I'd like to get to 4 minutes per kilometer for 5k.

But no, my body is somehow against me. I hurt my right calf really badly, no idea what happened, if it was just a turbocramp or if I tore something a bit but it hurt and still hurts.
I just want to run, man.

Why does nobodies ( or rarely) ever recommend watching the horizon / fat away ?

I used to perform the beta run , not looking further than 3 meter in front of me , I recently got good trails shoes and I can literally ignore my path and keep looking the trail as far as possible , really make the run way easier in the head .

Been running or biking every day for the past week
-Ran a 22 minute 5k on thursday casually
-Biked 20 miles on friday
-Ran another 5 miles on saturday (took it slow though)
-Ran a 10k yesterday in around 45 minutes

I haven't been too consistent lately, but as I up the mileage, I hope to get back to a 20 minute 5k at least. Fastest time I recorded for myself last year was a 5:20 mile; with that kind of speed I should be able to hit an 19 minute 5k if I really prepped for it for a month or two. I haven't been doing enough speed shit though...

Anyone read 'born to run' by this bloke Christopher McDougall? I'm reading it right now. Its an easy read, sucks you right in but sometimes its a bit hard to believe. I'm still undecided.

Still a good read about the passion of running. Also it made me really curious about running barefoot. I have a shitload of problems with my feet and knees and spent so much money on inlay soles and running shoes but nothing helps for long. Maybe going barefoot will..
>>
>>42344301
It's a really enjoyable book. I read Scott Jurek's Eat and Run afterwards, which was alright, but definitely preachy about veganism.

I picked up a pair of Xero Trails after reading Born to Run and ran in those for a little bit to slowly get myself used to it. Running on pavement is actually a lot better than running on grass and lets you learn a lot more quickly if you're doing anything wrong, form wise. I've been using Merrel Vapor Glove 2s and mostly just use my sandals for general walking/hiking now, but the Vapor Glove 2s are 100% my favorite. I haven't had any real issues with my form or potential injuries cropping up.

If you get into the barefoot meme, just take it slow with them. You can keep running in your normal shoes for the time being but don't forget to slowly ease yourself into running with zero drops/no cushion/barefoot.
>>
>>42344712
Meant to say running barefoot on pavement is a lot better than on grass*

are those stores where they measure your feet and have you run on a treadmill while filming to run in slowmo and look at your pronation/supination to get the best shoe a meme?
>>
>>42349914
Depends. If they instantly suggest the most expensive or least sold shoe then most likely. However consultation is free(at least at the store I went to) and if they recommend a shoe you dont have to buy it that day and you can do your own research on the shoe and feedback and see if it doesnt sound like bullshit. I know that Roadrunner lets you try for 90 days risk free or whatever but I think thats only if you have the vip membership.
>>
>>42349914
It's actually a really good thing if you go in knowing nothing about your running. If you are quite experienced however, trying out shoes yourself is enough. Recommendations are never a bad thing however

what excites me is whether or not I'll manage to break my PR. I'll start with a PR pace and will be like "oh boy, it's happening today" along the way. If it doesn't happen, well, at least I pushed myself, i.e. I'll use the gains from this run to push myself even further next time. Eventually I'll break my PR, set a new goal, and the cycle continues.

I run 5ks, started last July, first time was 39 minutes. 2 days ago I run it in 26 minutes. It doesn't sound super crazy but it's a huge achievement for me. One step at a time, I managed to bring my time down by 13 minutes in just one year. All those times, I quit half way through because of feeling like shit, all those times I did not quit and pushed myself to my maximum limits, barely breathing, feeling like dying, have paid off. And it always pays off, which is why I love running.

Had meniscus surgery back in may for a torn lateral meniscus on my left knee. Shit sucked. If the doctors goes for a meniscus repair you'll be on crutches for six weeks, it's just a debridement you should be walking the following the day

i did too much coke 2 weeks ago and now i have weird heart palpitations. im starting to do cardio to improve my heart health.

when i was 16 i did 1500m in 5:07. im 20 and today was my first time doing cardio since then. ran 3.5k at lowish pace (12km/h). going to increase the speed a bit each day and hopefully my heart fixes itself and i dont die

Saucony Cohesion 8's. They're one of the best shoes I've ever used. The only problem is that...they're cheap so they don't last long.

Ex-alchy here who started gettin' heart palps because of getting smashed every night. Went to a cardiologist and a few other doctors who told me my heart was fine but shit still freaked me out so I started running. Fell in love with running and my heart palps are gone. Just keep at it, start slow, and you'll feel better for it.
>>
>>42335921
That isn't that fast oh my God. 2:30 is a little low, maybe 2:45 would be better. But an 11 second 100m is nothing, 5 minute mile is achievable after about 1 year, and 16 minute 5k after about a year and a half. The question was about an equivalent to a 1/2/3/4, and that's achievable after about 1 year also. So it is a fine comparison. Relatively hard but simple with training.

Yeah, it's probably just some after-effects of coke or some shit. It'll probably go away.

Not really addicted, I just got too comfortable with drinking a ton of hard liquor every night for years. I eventually tapered off, got back onto it for a bit, and then tapered off again. I'm, surprisingly, able to have a few beers and then stop now, which might not even classify me as an actual alcoholic but whatever.

Was drinking consistently every night, anywhere from 8-14 shots, (never during the day) from 2011ish-2015ish.

Hey /run/

I am writing a script about a girl that is being chased by a killer, a plot element being that she isn't just some random girl but a runner. Or at least someone who goes on jogs and runs fairly often.

Want to introduce this bit of her character in a subtle way without outright saying so, this means showing a piece of clothing article, type of bottle water or shoes etc. I am a lazy shit who has no idea about any of these things.

The set up is that she has packed her belongings and is driving away from town, when on the road she encounters the killer. She is tricked into getting out of the car and then the chase scene ensues. The easiest way would be to just show some trophies or medals among her belongings but kinda wanna have something on her that is a constant reminder. Would like to avoid using brands if possible.

QUestion about weight/running and potential injuries that could arise:

I'm 6'1" 225, very active and at the end of the bulk. I've been running 5-6 km every day for 4 days now and would like to keep doing it every day in addition to my lifting.

It was all off road and on the route there's these 3 quite small but very steep hills one after the other and he shot up them like a rocket. He ran up them faster than I can run on flat and he didn't even look like he was trying. Anyway, it turns out he has a 29:xx 10k and a 2:17:xx marathon. Easily the best runner I've ever run with.

Take a break if the soreness is really bad. An extra day or two of rest between workouts isn't going to hurt when you're starting out, especially if it means you can push harder. Over time you'll get used to it. You can push through some soreness; a proper warm-up and stretch helps a lot. Static stretching can make it worse, so save the stretching for after your warm-up. Oh, and take like 2-3 ibuprofen.

Be really careful transitioning into any sort of minimalist shoe if you already have knee or tendon problems. While in theory running barefoot or with minimal footware will promote better form and less trouble on your joints, if your form is bad enough (bad range of motion or wrong muscle groups firing), you'll probably just start doing more damage to yourself, especially if you use the minimal shoes for more than just a small part of your running.

I know you're right that running with a hangover can be horrible, but there seems to be a short window usually between being drunk and being hungover. If I down a liter of water before leaving the house, I can usually sweat the hangover out, or at least mitigate a lot of its effects. It might not be the best run ever, but it usually turns out a lot better than expected.

Hey runners!
I got a few questions you might help with.
>When running, I have a weird pain on my right ankle. It's like it doesn't bend enough so there is some choc at each stride. Any idea what it can be, and how to correct it?

>I'm training for a 13.1. So I'm trying to go for some tempo runs, and some easy, short and long runs. But I kinda fail on the easy part. Each time I aim for a "slow" run, I complete it at my regular normal speed of about 7.2mph. Any tips on how to slow down?

>Also, nutrition wise, should I eat at a (small) deficit, or at a small surplus? I figured that since during the run I'll have to fuel some of the effort on fat, staying on a deficit would mean my body is used to use the fat reserves, the the chemical part is already in place. Might be overthinking the process though...

>And last one, if my training goes better than expected, can I run the 13.1 miles a week before the actual race in my long run day, just to get a feel of the distance, or is it unwise?

Thanks!
>>
>>42376371
Count you calories. And try to get a realistic evaluation of your TDEE. Eat at a 20~25% deficit, very high protein (like more than 1g per lbs of body weight). Keto isn't necessary, but might help to curve the cravings and to get enough good fats. Age is a factor in that your metabolism slows dow as you grow older, but you always can loose weight! And keep on lifting hard to maintain the volume and strength gains.

>>
>>42376397
Thank you for the advice
The thing is, no matter the way, I am neglecting getting back into a restriction diet, because i now know the HUGE benefits of high carb
headaches, dizzy spells, eating 6-7 times a day... totally GONE
i eat 3 meals, and I am full, i get into the gym happy, I get out of the gym happy, and I truly enjoy my daily cardio.

I am currently, as you suggest, reducing my calories instead of restricting carbs, to see if I lose some fat, but at the same time, I think maybe I need to be a little more patient: this hybrid approach will not get the fast results of low carbs or high fat, but a better outcome in the end
thank you again

Indeed be patient. Loosing weight is not a quick process unless you're a hamplanet. You can usually loose half a pound per week/2.2lbs per month. Also keep in mind that your actual weight on the scale varies a lot depending on your salt and water intake and bowel movements so sometimes even if you actually lost a pound of fat you can't actually see it on the scale. Shitty pic, can't tell if it's a pimple or something else. Rarely, I get huge puss-filled pimples on my thighs, ass, or in the pubic area, so you may have one of those. I usually just pop them, because otherwise they hurt like a motherfucker when I apply pressure.

You are supposed to do dynamic stretches (the ones where you constantly move, and don't just stay in a stretched position for a minute) before running. I usually do the ones from the warm ups section from the link in the sticky, but there are probably better, more running oriented ones: https://phrakture.github.io/molding-mobility.html
The other anon who replied to you is partially correct though, you should avoid static stretching before exercise, however it may be useful afterwards, especially if you have tight muscles. Anecdotal evidence, but static stretching after runs has reduced the rate of minor injuries for me.

Pain on ankle might be form issue. Check some videos, pay special attention to cadence, mid-foot strike, and making sure you're not overstriding.
To slowdown, have a heart rate monitor or a GPS watch and force yourself to stay in your easy pace/effort
I know nothing about nutrition
You can run the whole thing before, but 1 week seems too close to the race, if you're gonna do it, do it 3-4 weeks before.

Hey I want to lose some weight .
Right now I eat my TDEE before any kind of cardio -500 and then I eat all of my cardio calories back .
I end up most day with between -500 or - 750 but I eat up close to 2500 calories .

Is it efficient to create the deficit by doing huge amounts of cardio ?
>>
I do 1 mile on the treadmill then 1 mile on the elliptical then repeat till I have at least 4 miles. Did 5 miles yesterday holding at max treadmill speed for the last .2 miles, felt great.

My goal is to get down to 140 pounds from 180. Currently at ~152.

After I get my weight down my goal will switch to getting the fastest possible mile times I can.

Eating calories back is a bad idea. You say you like eating huge amounts of food, and you won't fix your shitty eating habits by losing weight mostly through cardio. You say you want to do huge amounts of cardio, I assume this means more than usual, which means that once you reach your goal weight and decrease the amount of exercise, you will inevitably gain the weight back. There is a risk of injury from increasing your weekly mileage too fast, and you might give up losing weight if you get injured for a week. The calorie estimates for exercise can also be inaccurate, so you may eat back more than you've burned, slowing down your progress.
>>
>>42379507

Why do hobby runners use the marathon as the benchmark for their goals?
What's wrong with wanting to just increase speed for something like a 10k?
All of these distances seem pretty arbitrary, but I generally don't want to be running at an intensive pace for longer than like 40 minutes.
>>
>>42380416

hi m8
>When running, I have a weird pain on my right ankle. It's like it doesn't bend enough so there is some choc at each stride. Any idea what it can be, and how to correct it?
Not sure what you mean by choc, but you might consider getting your ankle checked out if it keeps on happening. It might have something to do with your form, or your shoes, or just something that happened in the past and is being exacerbated by running.

>I'm training for a 13.1. So I'm trying to go for some tempo runs, and some easy, short and long runs. But I kinda fail on the easy part. Each time I aim for a "slow" run, I complete it at my regular normal speed of about 7.2mph. Any tips on how to slow down?
Hey, I'm doing the same training. Something that helped me slow down a lot for starting with base training was taking smaller steps but slightly increasing my spm. You kind of have to play with it a bit but you should be able to find an area that feels good and is slower than your pace/tempo run. I might also recommend a heart rate monitor for slow runs. Depending on the temperatures where you live, and assuming you can figure out your max heart rate, monitoring your heart rate can help you figure out your stride/pacing for slow runs.
>>
>>42380745
>Also, nutrition wise, should I eat at a (small) deficit, or at a small surplus? I figured that since during the run I'll have to fuel some of the effort on fat, staying on a deficit would mean my body is used to use the fat reserves, the the chemical part is already in place. Might be overthinking the process though...
I've honestly just kind of been eating whatever and haven't really had any issues. I hit 10mi for the first time last weekend with a decent pace after eating a bunch of spaghetti and some beer the night before, and then a banana and granola bar the next morning. I'll just say the gay thing: "listen to your body"

>And last one, if my training goes better than expected, can I run the 13.1 miles a week before the actual race in my long run day, just to get a feel of the distance, or is it unwise?
I don't really see it being unwise so long as you take the majority of the next week easy. Higdon's last week for half marathon training has you do a 12 mi the weekend before your half marathon, and then the rest of the week is just small runs. Just be careful with it.

Popliteus / MCL / Medial gastroc injury guy here.

Learned today I need to strengthen my hips and really work out my IT band.

I thought I was stretching my IT bands by bending over to the side but that stretch seems inefficient as I'm doing it now.

Do I stay completely in the horizontal plane or push my hip not just to the side but back a little?

How do I strengthen hips?

>>42362375
nice broscience friend

pretty sure this is hogwash, KE is 1/2 * m * v^2, even with the increased muscle mass this is the reason why distance runners are incredibly light. Probably wrong about the following since I'm just a uni student, but my guess would be that increased muscle mass/volume doesn't necessarily correlate with corresponding increase in oxidative capacity for your muscles, especially since much of the muscle mass gained in weight training is typeIIb fibres.

Ive been running for a long time, but until a year ago I just trained for hs cross country and mountain biking teams, so my runs were rarely more than 5 miles. I started running longer distance last winter but I didn't have enough money to enter actual races. I've run three "half marathons" which consisted of me running around on Rocky/hilly trails and farm roads till I hit 13.1 miles on gps, and my best time was 1 hour 35 minutes, although I feel I could do better in an actual race cause the course would be flatter. I just turned 18, so my body is just now developed enough to run marathons and not fuck itself completely. Can you guys rec me a routine for an intermediate runner to prepare himself for a marathon? How do you breathe while running? I find myself 10 minutes into it huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf. After about 25 minutes it settles itself and I get rolling effortlessly, but I feel like I'm doing something wrong when I start off that could be potentially dangerous.

Where it pops in and out? how much did it hurt on a scale of 1 to 10?
>>
>>42386915
Honestly, after it popped out I walked a mile back to my car. It was a very sharp pain, but was only bad for a few minutes. After that it swelled to the size of a grapefruit. Nothing got torn so all things considered it wasn't that bad. Also, as I said, this is the third time this has happened so I was just sort of pissed that this was going to get in the way of my mobility again. On a scale of 1-10, probably around a 5.

I wouldn't want it to happen again (it will), but if I tore my ACL or something it would hurt a lot worse, and I'd be a lot more pissed.
>>
I don't live in a particularly safe area and it gets extremely hot during the day so I'm averse to running outdoors. The nearest "nature trail" is over 25km from my house too. Our local rec center has some treadmills in it that I could run on. Is it acceptable to do something like C25K on a treadmill? I suppose running on a treadmill is better than not running at all.

you're fine dude. maybe just start out a little bit slower until you find your pace, but if you're finding it anyway, I don't see what the big deal is

Honestly, running in broad daylight isn't too terrible, especially if it's hot out. No one really wants to do shit when it's hot out.
If you really have to, you can use a treadmill for C25k but it's always preferable to run outside

It's acceptable to use treadmills if you really can't run where you live, but >muh heat is a shit excuse. You should try running in the heat, it's actually not that bad. You sweat a lot, and the wind from running cools you down pretty well.
>>
>>42387430
You should make sure you're not overstriding (your foot landing too far out in front of your body), because that's inefficient, and can lead to injuries.
You should also make sure you have good cadence, usually 180 steps per minute or more is recommended. You can measure your cadence easily by counting every step you take with your right leg for a minute, and then multiplying it by two. Increasing your cadence is also a good way to avoid overstriding, assuming you have that problem in the first place.
Midfoot landing is generally recommended, but heel-striking isn't necessarily bad as long as you're not overstriding.
Make sure to use actual running shoes, and replace them after about 300-400 miles.
