Spotters are basically not required for high bar if you have safeties or bumper plates - the bar is easy to drop. If you topple forward at the bottom of a low bar squat with no safeties or spotter then you're fucked.

As long as you're careful, low bar with no spotter or safety is ok, but the risk is there. It is possible to drop it but it hurts and if you topple forward you're going to get crushed. If you don't think you can get another rep, don't try it. I squatted low bar in my garage on SS and got up to 160kg 3x5 until I joined a gym. Never had to drop it because I didn't get stupid with it. I'd suggest never ever attempting a 1RM without safeties or a spotter if you do low bar.

not only is spotting their body pretty fucking gay, it is also much less effective. The principal is the same as the bench press. You don't need to be able to row the entire weight from their chest they fail a bench attempt, you just need to lift enough for them to lock it out and return it to the rack. Ideally you have 3 people to spot a heavy Squat, and none of them touch the lifter. But hey if you guys wanna bear hug sweaty men then go for it.

The spotter is there for two reasons. First, to scream motivation into your ear to get you hyped and force more adrenaline production during the lift. And second, in the event you start to fail, the spotter will make a fist, extending only the thumb and give a quick, sharp goose to the lifters anus. This causes the lifter's autonomic nervous system to react and drive the lifter up. It's Newton's Third Law.
