Let's talk about running and lament how slow we are

Bros. I'm getting bored of just lifting and am looking at doing triathlons, probably just a sprint to start with. Has anyone here managed to do endurance races while maintaining muscle and/or losing a bit of fat? I'm around 5'11 182lbs 12ish% BF and the absolute lowest I'd want to go is 175lbs 8%. I'm not concerned with being competitive, just looking for a challenge

I want to run every day but my body won't let me. I'm gonna rest two days for this foot thing to go away, apparently one day wasn't enough.

13 miles on 3 runs this week, my highest mileage since I started. Also doing 3 days strenght training.
Considering that some months ago I was depressed, smoked, drank everyday and did coke ocasionally, I'm doing great. Running might save my ass.
Anyone with a similar story?

Anyone else fucking hate treadmills?
It seems like I run slower and shorter distances when on a treadmill, I can't get myself hyped/motivated like I can when running outside.
>>
>>42305987
i don't hate them, but i've noticed this. one year, when i was learning how to jog, i ran a mile in under 10 minutes, which made 0 sense to me, because i couldn't maintain a 6mph pace on a treadmill for 10 minutes.

Gotta lower my three mile time for a fitness test.

A perfect score is 18:00 mins and my best time is 20:48.

I've been alternating long distance three days a week and sprints two days a week to drop my times.

I did too much hill running, now I have achilles tendinitis real bad in my left heel. If this were a just world, you'd be able to heal injuries by pushing yourself harder instead of taking time off.
>>

Just do uphill biking, it has a higher carryover to squatting diddling anyways.

Plus if you do it with HIIT you'll get a leg pump from hell.
>>
Does running kill gains?

It does if you do way too much, since it burns calories way too much your muscles don't get some.
But 2 hours is ok unless you eat like a chinese fucker.

I am getting back to exercising, cause enough of faggotry right. should I bother running (I like it, used to run 10k regularly, was fun) when I am fucking skinny and never managed to get weight?
>>
>>42303612
Guys I'm supposed to run 8.5 km tomorrow.
Last time I ran anything or did anything cardio related was probably 4 months ago. And I barely did 3km (though I stopped because of leg pain, not because I couldn't go further). Also, I've not been to the gym since last month.
My question is: what are the chances I'm actually going to make it?

Actually, this is one of the things that having a fitness watch has helped me get over.

I see my heart rate drop when i feel sluggish, then i realize i should push harder, so i pick up my cadence. i have my garmin set to shorter 1k laps so i get more frequent updates on my split times.

the small things like that are helping me keep up my pace, I run alone, so that's the only thing helping to keep me motivated.

it's helping out a lot.

Jesus, it's like Mark has not read any material on why almost every sport does cardio except for a few studies that confirm his view point. Cardio is most important in developing strength because it is the capilliarization that occurs which helps facilitate recovery faster and more efficiently. He talks about dogma yet spouts common bodybuilder dogma that they use to avoid any kind of cardio. He might as well said: "don't do cardio, it ruins muh gainz".

And endurance athletes don't do strength training? More bullshit. I lift heavy three times a week and I've completed four marathons with a PR of 4:02. A guy in my running club can do 1/2/3/4 and has completed a 100 miler in 25 hours.

What do I do /run/?
>>
>>42318940
get good running shoes and start running, in the beginning run really slow, most people run way too fast in the beginning.
If you are overweight, start with some walking, since running may be bad for your joints.
You can try plans like Couch to 5k or just run slowly and increase the distance

running (and cardio in general) is really enjoyable after you build a bit of endurance, and also it's really fun to progress, get PRs and so on

and also make an account on a website like Endomondo or Strava, and upload your runs, walks, rides there, it is really motivating, and it gives you lots of statistics if you like them (I love statistics, so it encouraged me to run more)
>>
>>42318940
also, consider stopping smoking, you will feel better, and running will help you with not smoking too.
>>
>>42318940

Decent running shoes can be gotten for like 50-70 bucks. See how far you can run before you're wheezing for air and chest is burning. Two days later do the sample thing but go a little farther. Repeat every 2-3 days for a few months and it gets easier. Make a circuit that ends near your house or whatever. Sprint the last hundred feet or so.

>>
>>42324970
Try breathing more deeply and slowing your running down a bit when you get a stitch, and gradually moving your pace back up once it subsides.
>>
>>42312191
Might not solve the problem but It might help to look up some running warmup routines.

most coaches will have their runners start workouts doing a few drills + dynamic stretches mostly targeting your ability to drive your knees up & practice mid-foot landings with back straight, shoulders relaxed, etc.

the goal is to slowly teach your brain good running technique + posture. That way when you begin to tire out on your run your form wont go to shit.

I think the issue you're having is that on top of being tired, you have to deal with a snowball effect of your form deteriorating, making your movement way less efficient. This starts to wear people out even quicker since it causes energy to be used much more rapidly to cover the same amount of ground.
>>

run slower and focus on breathing into your stomach. try to breathe just through your nose but, if you have to, breathe deeply through your nose and exhale through your mouth

helps avoid cramps and you'll feel better for it

Don't do bigger strides. That's how you really fuck yourself up. Maintain good posture and move legs faster. Do not increase your stride length.
Also start slow if you haven't been running. If you notice any shin pain, stop, take a few weeks off and start slow again. If you ignore it, you can go visit snap city and have chronic compartment syndrome.

Can anyone give me some routine for sprinting?

I just started running twice a week and I would like to implement it somehow.

People oftens says to keep a 170-180 stride per min rate and some also says to no increase your strides length .
How are you supposed to get faster if your spm is locked and your stride length is locked too .

My main goal is to be able to just do an ultra and not fucking die, but 6 min/mi for ~55 miles is buck wild. Ultrarunners are on some other other shit

180 spm spot on is fucking stupid. You can vary between 170-200 based on a lot of different shit.

You get faster by doing long runs slow and short runs fast (not all the time). You can maintain the same spm and still go faster. It seems like a paradox the way that you've put it but stick your dick in the pavement and it explains itself.

When you get big enough, kiddo - you don't need to run away. Other things run from you.

But then I can't catch them because I never run? So I should run more... Okay, you convinced me.

Anyone find it hard to "pace" yourself? I can't fucking jog for the life of me. I feel like I run too fast but when I slow down I actually start feeling discomfort in my legs. Running fast seems so much more natural to me to the point where it seems legitimately easier than keeping a slow pace. Should I slow down?

And this is why I am always passing people during races. It's a very basic skill that no one bothers to develop. Get a GPS watch with a heart rate monitor and learn to utilize it. When I was learning to properly pace, I would utilize average pace within a certain target range (e.g. my long runs between 10:00 to 10:10.) After awhile, learn to do it within heart range. Then, take that and learn to run based on feel. After awhile, it becomes automatic to you.

I wish I had that picture that said "There are people who don't have the balls for distance running. The nice term for them is called 'sprinters'."
>>
>>42327769
Gotta confuse 'em, right?
>>
>>42327854
Just like how distance runners don't have the balls to run really fast for a short distance?
>>
>>42327896
Oh you, sprinters! We do it all the time! They are called intervals and there's lots of ways of doing them. The most common ones are hill sprints and 800 repeats. We have many other forms of speed drills we do too that involve really fast running at 90% heart rate.

I was running some time ago but I stopped because one of my calves started to hurt, so I decided to rest some days.

Even after weeks of rest, although it hurts less, it still hurts when I put pressure or when I make an effort. What can I use or do to stop the pain? What can I do to prevent it to happen again?

Do you run a lot of hills? Do you over or under pronate? Do you accentuate heel or forefoot striking? New shoes?
>>
>>42329697
>Do you run a lot of hills?
No
>Do you over or under pronate?
To be honest I don't pay much attention to that, but I think I do it normal
>Do you accentuate heel or forefoot striking?
At the beginning I accentuated heel, but then I changed to a more midfoot running
>New shoes?
Nah, my shoes look fine.

My pain did started before I changed my way of running, so it was probably caused because of my heel landing. Then I continued running thinking that it will pass with time.
>>
>>42319980
Not much, around 60k. Happy with them so far though.
>>
>>42330822
How long are your runs that you're doing? Is it your whole calf that hurts or just a specific part?
