Is a 225 lb. bench press considered respectable?
>>
>>42281498
I've been stalling at 75kg for months (for reps, thankfully), so I'd say yes. 1/2/3/4, was it?
>>
>>42281498
it's the "i lift" weight
nothing impressive but depends on where u started ofc
>>
>>42281498
For reps yes
>>
Doing it 15-20 times, yes
>>
>>42281498
For one? No. For 5x5, yeah I'd respect that.
>>
>>42281498
As a 1rm it's not that respectable unless you are like 160. For 3x8 or 5x5 or whatever (for reps, basically) it's pretty respectable pretty much no matter your weight. 225lb bench easily puts you in the top 1% of gym goers and the top .01% of the general population
>>
>>42281498
if youre of an average build or less when you start lifting its definitely respectable
>>
>>42281498
Depends on your body and what not. If you weigh more than 225, then no. If you weigh under 200, then highly respectable
>>
the fuck it is.

i'm 148 lean and do a 3x5 225 BP, and i sure as shit don't respect it.
>>
>>42281568
>>42281586
Lads I'm 185 lbs and I can do 225 for 5x5 with three of the sets being fully paused and I only have 16 months training from couch potato. Up your standards anything that can be achieved in less than 2 years is not impressive
>>
>>42281682

It may not be respected by experience lifters who know what they are doing but for a lot of gym retards they go in day after day making very little progress doing meme exercises. So it's respected by normies pretty much
>>
>>42281682

You are a retard. Re-think your life then go back in time and euthanize your mom so you can abort yourself.

Just by the fact that you are on this board means you are PROBABLY already in the top 1% of the planet in fitness.

Saying 225lbs isn't respectable is a retarded position because it assumes that everyone is like you. That's like asking a bunch of guys at the olympics if a 405 squat is impressive. Obviously to them it's dogshit. But if you tell a fucking normie you squat 405 they are gonna call you a steroid freak.

Same thing with benching 225. Why do you think they use it as the base for the draft, a la OP's picture? Because it's a respectable weight for a fucking prospective pro-athlete you cuntwaffle
>>
>>42281682
>I'm 185 lbs
it's almost your bodyweight so this is not impressive at all in your case
>>
It almost definitely is unless you're over 6 ft or surrounded by people that only train for strength. And even then nobody is gonna laugh at you for a 2pl8 bench.
>>
>>42281682
Working at something for even a year consistently is certainly respectable. Idk why you fags think everything is worthless unless you tren from birth and surpass all of humanity.
>>
>>42281498
>225 lb. bench press respectable

If it is full pause, and the guy is under 200 lbs, then it is decent.
>>
I'm 150lbs and I do 12-13reps with 230lbs, I don't consider that special, quite the opposite...
still better than my crappy deadlift tho...
>>
To me it is, but I started out benching only 55 pounds.

Body weight bench = Person lifted for strength for like 8 months
IDK I'd say 225 is respectable in a way, but not impressive.
>>
at 225 you are no longer dyel
315 will get you respect of most gym goers
405 will get people mirin
>>
>>42281498
At a good number of reps with decent form yes
a single rep bounced off your chest with your legs spazzing out? Not really unless you're light and/or female
>>
>>42281732
I do like this response and think its warranted.

But he does have a point in saying that 2 years with consistent effort on anything and you should have a movement thats not only respectable but impressive.

That actually seems like a good metric.
>>
>>42282869

Some of you guys are crazy. I know I can't hit 225 bench after lifting for a year. 315 squat though is no problem. I'll probably get it within another year though. Long skinny arms at 6'3" don't help I guess.

To be frank, any weight over 1pl8 is respectable in my book(and with most gym normies, the mere sight of a skelwton benching over 1pl8 is intimidating), especially if you have been lifting for less than 6 months and started as skellyfag or hamplanet loser.

You can become respectable at anything within 2 years if done properly.

It takes very little time to go from absolute shit to pretty respectable, but going beyond respectable into "I can't actually fathom how you are this good" territory is what takes the extra time.

Like you can play every classic rock song ever written within 2 years of guitar playing and everyone will think you're a god but you've got a lot more work to do before you can play something by Jeff Loomis.

Same story here kinda. Gained too much weight and made decent strength gains but now I'm in month 5 or 6 of dropping all of this dead weight while trying to keep the strength (nothing is going up at this point). At least I've kept most of the strength after dropping 40lbs.

Do lots of push ups before you start lifting
Play football in HS
Do a program with actual high-volume bench (not SS)
Care about your bench more than you care about squats

So, 225 for normies it is. For people who lifts it is.
For the champions of the nfl combine and powerlifting elite community (all of them are here in this very thread) no.
>>
>>42292233
To be fair it's all about where you lift, when I used to lift in a commercial gym 2pl8 bench used to be considered good and people will actually talk to you, now that I went to a black iron gym where first week there was a guy doing 4pl8 for triples my 2.5pl8 bench wouldn't have people batting an eyelid.

At the end of the day if lifting isn't your job then you need your own goals rather than lifting for other people's respect.

>huge who can't/don't bench that amount
that's simply not true. they may not train with that (or you don't see them train with that), but they could absolutely lift 2 plates if they wanted to.
>>
>>42281498
Only in a HS weightroom without a respectable football program.
>>
A 225lbs bench is very easy to reach. The reason most guys don't is because they train wrong and/or eat wrong. I've lifted for years in several different gyms, and it's pretty rare to see someone bench 225lbs where I train, but it's not because they are unable to. They just train wrong. I commonly see way too many exercises, way too many reps and sets, not nearly enough consistency and almost never enough food. They just end up spinning their wheels endlessly. On a rare occasion you'll run into someone who "gets it", does a proper routine and pays attention to his diet. I've yet to meet a guy like that who didn't reach 2 plates easily.
>>
>>42293272
>test p
lol why, short esters are for faggots. long ester and kickstart with orals like someone who doesn't have a cock in their ass 24/7

To repeat what 30 other fags said, 2pl8 bench is not impressive at all unless you are a tiny guy or a woman. For reference, I weigh 163 and bench 260 5x5 without failure as of 4 days ago. Moving up to 265 in 2 days and doubt I will fail a set.

225 is your high school diploma. 300+, 3 plates, is the line for serious strength. But you can get an excellent body with 225 if you got it up to 12-15 reps

When they say 2 pl8, they mean for reps right?

I've just assumed 1/2/3/4 was a good goal for reps. If thats the standard for 1 rep maxes, I've been stressing over nothing.

There's no reason you shouldn't be at those lifts in a year starting out from a sedentary lifestyle, with deadlifts maybe taking a couple extra months

Genuinely not baiting. The bar is 10kg, right? I think my muscles have atrophied or something because of my horrible diet and lack of excercise until now. I'm currently ultimate skeleton mode- 5'11" and 63kg. Up until last week when I decided I needed to start lifting, my only excercise was running 8k probably 3x a week. You'd think I'd look like an auschwitz survivor at that weight but I only look slightly underweight, with pathetically thin twig arms. Got any tips for starting to lift? The most I can do is bicep curl 10kg.
>>
>everyone on /fit/ benches 2 pl8
I just came back from a bit of a bench hiatus. I was still doing calisthenics though. I hit 175 3 x 5 yesterday. It felt real good. My short term goal is to be able to do 185 for reps. That pl8 plus a 25 looks so much more aesthetic than little cucklet weights.

brother, do not let these salty fucks get to you

I started from not being able to lift the bar (20kg)

6 months later and I can bench 70kg.

Spend your first two months doing machine isolation exercises, particularly for biceps, triceps, chest and shoulders. Don't forget legs, though! Then, begin 5x5.

good luck, friend.

you SHOULD supplement the 5x5 routine with accessory exercises.

for whatever reason everyone thinks rippletits only wanted people to do the 3 exercises in his starting strength 3x5... but in the book he literally goes over a shitload of accessory lifts and teaches how to do them and where to add them, including curls and lateral raises and all that stuff.

you SHOULD add 2-3 accessory lifts to each of your days workouts.

People with shit diet break 2pl8 easier because they bulk to 220 and it's not even intermediate at that weight. That's the secret behind SS, it leaves you as a 220lb novice lifter but now you can post your numbers on /fit/ without posting your weight to sound strong.
>>
>>42306072
Absolute strength impresses normies and is pretty useful IRL. But there is big appeal to good relative strength in the lifting community
>>
>>42306095
I much prefer using wilks or symmetric strength to track my progress. If anything normies are the ones who are really impressed if you have crazy relative strength because they don't realise the advantage low bodyweight gives. They just see a dude that doesn't weigh much putting up decent numbers and they think wow that's crazy.

Never tested it out, but estimated was ~245 when I started and ~260 when I finished. I only did 2 weeks of the 3 week program, probably could have squeezed out an extra 5-10lbs had I finished. Brought my 5 rep max up by about 7.5lbs for sure though
>>
Seeing as this is about bench press I'll ask. Just started doing dumbbell bench press but I'm not really feeling it in my chest. More just in my biceps. That normal?
>>
>>42308120
Not normal at all. You shouldn't feel it much in your biceps anyways as pushing exercises use chest and triceps more than anything.
>>
>>42308163
Shit triceps is what I meant. But still don't feel it in my chest tho. Must be doing it wrong
>>
I think /fit/'s real problem is people come in saying

>lol XD I was lifting lmao2pl8 after 6 months fucking chestlets when will they learn

when in fact they mean

>I lifted for 2 years, injured myself and took a year off
>I've been lifting again for 6 months and already hit 2pl8

That or /fit/ is full of student athletes

As an absolute beginner skelly I couldn't bench the bar, and it took a good 6 months to bench 1pl8 (gained 25 lbs in this time period), after not lifting for 5 years and falling back down to my starting weight I could bench 1pl8 within a week or two.. residual strength is insane.
>>
>>42281498
I think it's absolutely respectable, but not impressive.
>>
>>42308187
Could just be that your triceps tire out before your chest which is normal. Make sure you arent keeping your elbows tight to your sides. The closer to 90 degrees from body the less teiceps should be used but I usually keep an angle of around 65 degrees to prevent shoulder impingement.
>>
>>42308242

How did you stall? I followed James Vest's advice and blew past and I'm creeping up 225 for reps now.

Bar x 12 reps to warm up.
135 x 2-4 reps
185 x 2 reps
225 for as many as I can. If I can get to 225x6 I will then try for 230x1 or 235x1.

Then it's 185x8-12 for 4 sets
then 1 set of 135 until failure.

THEN we do inclines. Then dips. Then flies. Fuck your shit up.

No, the problem is fit is made up entirely of 2 halves. Skellys and fat asses. Fat asses can bench 225 in 6 months but they spend the next year finally loosing games the weight and skellys stay lean but take the next year to get that 225 bench. Both sides don't trust each other.

>>42299057
Depends on if your diet is dialed in. If yes, adding 1-2 accessories per workout is all you want to do. The focus needs to be on the big compounds. The biggest burnout on 5x5 is diet followed closely by too many fucking accessories.
