My best friend weighed 450lbs. Was injecting 200 units of insulin, 2grams of metformin, was on sulphonylurias, blood pressure meds, and two cholesterol drugs. He was beginning to suffer from diabetic nephropathy, and diabetic nerve pain. And all of this on a diet being administered by the local diabetic aid commission

I finally convinced him that insulin was the root of the problem and he took a week off of work (despite working remotely from home using telephony). I took my two weeks of vacation and moved in even. He was too fat to walk down the stairs so I took what food he had in the house away and put it in the basement behind lock and key.

Within four days his blood sugar was 100 in the mornings. and averaged in the 90's during the rest of the day. He came off his blood sugar meds. And at day three the most miraculous thing ever happened. When I got back from my run at 7:45 he was already up before his 8am alarm. The first time in a decade he didn't need to hit the alarm a dozen times before having the energy to get out of bed.

Without any prompting from me he asked what kind of exercises he could do. This after years of his friends begging him to exercise and saying no because he was too tired. So we started working out.

By the end of the second week his blood pressure had dropped from hypertensive stage 2, to Pre-Hypertension and his doctor gave him the go-ahead to cut his blood pressure meds. After two months his blood panel showed significant improvements in his cholesterol so he was taken off of his cholesterol meds.

In all he fasted for 6 months he'd lost 180lbs and transitioned to intermittent fasting. He's down to 190 and fucking kills it in the gym.

He can eat a piece of cake at a birthday party and has absolutely perfect insulin response to it. He has no diabetes any more.

The sad part was he was scheduled to have bariatric surgery before he decided to fast.

I honestly dont understand it.
People with that kind of a size should have no problem with losing weight.
Even if he would just switch to drinking water, while maintining his eating habbits, the amount of kcal loss should be enough to lose weight.

I have to keep at about 1200-1300 a day to lose weight, which is 700 down from what myfitnesspal (and most other resources) tell me I need to lose weight.
