It's because when you look at yourself in the mirror you will sub consciously see what you want to see, while when you look at a picture you will look at it more objectively without your mind fucking with you, like you would look at anyone else.

Mirror is more reliable

Cameras are translating the 3D realm into a flat 2D plane, thus the image becomes distorted. The human eye also has a lot more pixels than your camera, about 130 million pixels. However, only about 6 million of the eye’s pixels are cones (which see color), the remaining 124 million just see black and white.

Under what category do mobile phone lenses fall under? I'd assume they're pretty distorted at close distance?

Compare my arms in the first image with the second. My left arm (my perspective) looks skelly in the second picture compared to the first. In the first picture im standing further away from the mirror.
