this is because the pituitary gland is located in the sphenoid bone right beneath the maxilla. when the maxilla is recessed the pressure in this bone changes causing the pituitary glands hormone secretion to become unbalanced.

Thank god my mother convinced me to stop mouth breathing before I hit puberty.

I was like... 4 or 5 years old, and we were on this tour of an old mine. There was a guy who looked quite similar to the OP's pic (on the right) with his mouth hanging open in a constant, gormless expression, with barely any chin.

My mother said to me "Look, anon, that's what you'll look like if you keep on breathing through your mouth."

I stopped instantly and never did it again on a regular basis.
