It works your forearms.

Can alleviate wrist pain if you have bad form or inflexible wrists. Strengthens wrists/forearms. Slightly increases ROM. You need a softish surface to do them on though or your knuckles will be kill.

They are harder to do than normal pushups for me

Do which ever feels better, makes no difference.
Avoid the paralysis by analysis and just do it.

it helps make your hands tougher for punching

it's the only way I can do push ups. I have a torn ligament in my wrist that may never heal
