If we're supposed to drink X amount of water a day. Would tea or similar beverages count because they are like 99% water? Or does that only account for pure water?
Nah, the second you put some leaves in it and heat it up, your body no longer recognizes it as water and just pisses it out.
Water chases milliosmoles or some shit

As long as you don't overly sugar it tea is fine
Green tea is the only good tea.
Its a little complicated, but when you introduce things like caffeine into beverages (which is found in most sodas, teas, coffee, etc.), it messes with your kidney function. Basically, one of your kidney's functions is to get rid of all the water and useful elements and compounds, and concentrate the harmful toxins and useless shit to be expelled through urination. The way it does this is through a series of tubes that create concentration gradients. It has channels that extract water from urine and also channels that extract useful elements, leaving mostly shit to be expelled. It then also has hormone regulated reabsorption of water. Caffeine blocks these channels and doesnt let you reabsorb the water as efficiently, causing you to pee out more water, which is why your pee is often clear when drinking things with caffeine.
There was some research on how much water is actually reabsorbed when drinking coffee, but I can't recall the actual number right. IIRC, it was like 60-70% as efficient, but dont quote me. You can probably find it through a quick Google search. Im phone posting so I cant be assed.
