Transcendental Meditation
Does anyone here do it? Does it work? I don't really know what board to place this thread on.
Why through? I mean, i do zazen, which is basically deep breathing and concentrating on it, to be aware of yourself has many studies about it, improves cognition, calms you, better your focus...
Now i don't see why TM would help, sounds really farfetched to just keep repeating something as a way to achieve any relevant state.

Yeah just find a place where its quite and just start focusing on your breath. That's it.

pretty sure other kinds of Buddhism use mantras in their meditations
when researching meditation, just try to get it straight from the horse's mouth (aka actual recognized masters) instead of infographics or people with little to no contact with the real thing

Can a book substitute? I am interested in learning more.

Not him.
Zen mind, Beginners mind is a good intro.
Bible beats all though

i started with Mindfulness in Plain English. one of the older editions is available for free online, i'll try to find it. it is Vipassana Buddhism which is different than Zen, but it's meant for total beginners so it does an amazing job of explaining the concepts in general (what is meditation, mindfulness, concentration, what's the point, how does it work), giving an overview of the various schools of Buddhism, etc. I would start there
The Three Pillars of Zen is also amazing. author was an American translator/lawyer (i think) involved in the post-WWII trials. went to Japan, studied Zen for like 12 years, the whole thing. it is more dense and goes much deeper than the other one
