Last running thread hit the bump limit so here's a new one.

>Been running 1.5 miles year and a bit, started at 15 minutes
>Ran 3 or 4 times a week, sometimes in rain snow or 20 below zero
>Today I hit my goal of 8 minutes 30 seconds

I binged on some chocolate when I got home. Now I'm pumped for tomorrows run.
>>
How do you guys feel about only doing interval/sprint training? I just want to go fast
>>
I run with old shitty worn out shoes on trail , I think i'd be able to do an accurate map of all the smalls rocks and pebbles on my path but It don't bother me , I have huge fucking callouses of steel under my feet , I only to Botf running , should I bother with new shoes ?
>>
>>42113558
It's not a meme but it's not the best. If you wanna increase speed do lots of squats and cleans.
>>
>>42113570
I kept my shity trail shoes for a month or 2 to long after the snow melted this year and started getting knee problems(all better now)
>>
>>42113582
So even if it feels ok to run with it it may actually be causing damage ?
>>
>>42113589
yeah in my case the cushining was fucked in a way that caused my feet to turn slightly inwards I didnt notice this till I started running in new pair and it felt them pushing back stoping my foot from doing that wierd turn ive gotten used to
>>
>>42113613
>*I felt
>>
>>42113589
Not necessarily, knee pain has several causes like tightness of the IB bands and Quads, poor form or too high a mileage. Shoes are important but not the only thing to pay attention to.
>>
>Weigh 95 kg 1 january
>Set goal to finish a 50k 1 july
>Lose 15kg
>Run 10km under 50
>Run two half marathons
>Actually finish 50k in 23+ Celsius

The sun really hit me hard. 7 hours 30 minutes for what I expected would be 6 hours 30 minutes.

Honestly though, there isn't a single race or distance I'm afraid of now. It's just pure will.
>>
>>42113589
Just learn to listen to your body. There is a distinct difference between pain and aches. Aches is pretty common for runners, it's just one of those thing you live with while running distances, and partially one of the things that increases your mental fortitude. I've yet to see an interview with a professional runner that hasn't talked about enduring aches.

Pain however, watch out for that, stop running when you feel it and rest, figure out why you get pain.

what's a realistic 5k time with a year of running training?

been lifting for a few years now and doing moderate cardio but want to get into running

Assuming you're training specifically for a 5k, sub-20 if you're a boi, sub-22 if you're a grill.

Also, if admin is reading this, please change leaderboards to run only.
>>
>>42114142
Anywhere between 35 - 20 minutes.
>>
>>42114142

I started running a few months ago. I went from doing zero cardio for several years to 5k in 25 minutes within two weeks of training.

I suggest you run 5k as often as possible (7 days a week if you can manage it) - you'll be surprised how fast you whittle down your times once you've got the distance down.

The first time I really lost weight I did it by getting turbo hardcore into running. Went from couch to 10K in about 8 months. I was about 180 pounds when I started running. I fucking LOVED running.

Now I'm 220 and have been plateaued for most of the summer. I want to get back into it but I know I risk knee damage/shin splints from my weight. At what weight should I hit the pavement again?

I know the obvious answer is "I don't know dude, just try and see if it hurts" but I'd like to hear your thoughts.
>>
>>42114478
Start by walking every day.
If you dont think it's intense enough find the highest hill, 50-100 meters in alt should do enough, and walk up and down.

After 30 days of that you'll ready for your first 2k-5k run depending on weight.

Also during the first 30 days i'd recommend a diet variant of Paleo to drop roughly 10-20 pounds.
>>
>>42114478
go on a strict diet for a while or exercise bike at gym to lose first stone.
>>
>>42114478
Also, I did a 30 day diet consisting purely of chicken and broccoli and lost roughly 20 pounds. Lost a lot muscles but I wanted to lose weight more, so it's fully possible.

>>42113628
I'm this guy.
>>
I'm this dude >>42114478

Thanks for the responses. I really should implement walking first. I don't walk very much when I'm home from Uni.

I have lost about 60 pounds since I started weight loss through diet mostly. Some lifting this summer and I've started cardio biking at the end of a lifting session. I just started eating in keto style so hopefully that will plateau bust my shit up.

I can't wait to get back to running dudes. I never felt so empowered in my life than when I got up and crushed a 5k before school.

Thanks dudes, I will start walking.
>>
>>42114540
Also find a race or a goal so you will have a deadline. It will help, especially if you visualize it.

What I did was basically create a picture of a guy finishing a 50k race, then I wrote the name of the race on the picture, had it as background on my cellphone, my home laptop and my work station for six months.

And whenever I struggled, before race, during race, that picture is what I though of.
>>
>>42114478
I'm an anon on a Mongolian rope braiding so take my adivce with a grain of salt but

If you hit the pavement the odds of permanent life changing injury is high. Diet and non impact cardio down to a non suicidal weight

Now that I've lost weight from about 100kg to around 80kg, and have been walking, now is a good time to start running and sprinting. For health and fitness reasons I'd like to be able to run 10kg or so. But I'd play to play either rugby or gridiron next year, so I'll need to get faster. What do you guys think if I focus on bring able to do 10km 3 or 4 times a week and then add on sprint work to that as well? (I'm lifting full body 3 times a week as well)
>>
>>42119854
Take it easy. Don't start running 10k a few times a week, work towards doing so. Start by doing it once a week of you feel confortable, and then gradually increase it if you feel fit to do so
>>
>>42120401
Yeah, that's what I meant, work to 10km 3 times a week, then add sprints. Probably did not make that clear.
>>
>>42113558
Not enough variety, doesn't confuse the muscle enough.
>>
>>42114142
I could run it in 23-24 minutes after about a year of running ~3 5Ks a week, but I pretty much plateaued there. If you wanna get faster, you need to do different types of running in your training.

hi guys newbie runner here with simple question
in trying to extend my distance is it better to run only as far as i can do so uninterrupted or if i want to run a longer distance should i run it even if i need to take a breather in between and keep doing so until i no longer need that break?

i don't know if i worded that right
>>
when you post your times, do you post average times or personal bests
>>
>>42121739
I guess it depends where you're at. If you can't even run 5k yet, then do c25k. Past that, just increase slowly the distance per week. Don't try to do too much. And if you feel like you need a break, it just means you should run slower.

So to answer your question, uninterrupted I guess, but make sure you're pacing yourself properly.
>>
>>42122529
It's always implied to be the personal best unless specified otherwise.

4min a k is challenging for most runners anon. I run it sub 17, but I appreciate that most people will find 4/sub 4 min a k for 5k impossible

>>42123602
Hit the track preferably and do some intervals until you want to die, 4 x 1mile 10 min intervals (run a mile fast as you can, have rest of the 10 min to recover, go again). Mix it up too, one week do 8 x 500m 3 min intervals and so on. It's a tough barrier to break, as much mental as anything

Most of my local races have winners for the 5k in the 16min range. To get to a race with almost no sub 20 runners you need to find one specifically catered to fat people or something
>>
>>42128573
First you have to make sure that it doesn't hurt to walk. Then you make sure it doesn't hurt to brisk walk. Then you make sure you can run for 1 minute with no pain.
After all this, you go for a SLOW run and make sure you don't feel pain. Walk if you do and take another rest day

It can work, but you'll be limiting your overall aerobic ability and work capacity.

Sub 15 is Elite tier! What do you run it now and is it road or treadmill?
>>
>>42132300
Slow your pace slightly, aim for 6:10 to 6:20 a k and see if you can keep going the whole way. Good time for a run/walk though anon, you're gonna make it for sure
>>
>>42121095
Damn 28 is hard for me
>>
>>42132259
Fuck anon, I did a 15min 5k when I was younger, on a flat course with months of training and it hurt like fuck, I was in pain from 800m in until the end and I threw up at the end! I doubt anyone here is as fast as you, not sure we can help, just keep training I guess!
>>
>>42130168
If you run on a treadmill, your fitness app probably estimates your distance based on step count, which is unsurprisingly inaccurate. When you run outside, most fitness apps use GPS, which is pretty fucking accurate. From personal experience, there really isn't a significant difference between the distance reported by my bike's speedometer and the distance reported by the app I use, because both of them use a pretty reliable method of measuring distance.

I run 8km twice a week, 1.5 miles twice a week, strength train 3 times and then swim 2 times.

15:30 after a season of prep
on a track with people screaming the entire time and with the first 200 meters being completed in 30 seconds
>>
>>42128333
>>42129634

When I say it's easy I mean you don't need to be Usain Bolt himself to do this. It took me a year and a half of 4 runs a week, two 1.5 mies and 2 5 miles.
>>
>>42129664
So the study that sprinters can't run 5km without stopping is...?
>>
>>42132412
how old? I'm skeptical that it started to hurt at 800 meters unless you had overtrained severely
>>42133057
in the 2 weeks leading up to this race I did some slow distance and a track workout. the race was a tactical disaster and I managed to get third with a time that would have seeded me 12th going in.
I'm aiming for 14:30 as a goal because the races don't hurt like they did in highschool and I beat my time in the 5k by 1:30!
>>42133098
I'm not following the argument but by only training for the 400 David rudisha ran his first 800 in 1:50
>>
I have had mild shinsplints all my life, got them infrequently maybe once every couple of weeks. Now after being relatively inactive with my running for the last couple of years I've started running again 3 times a week and I've started to get fairly severe shinsplints if I take even a two day break from running or when I'm walking too quickly (not speedwalking but not sauntering either, I tend to walk quickly). Anyone had an issue like this before? As long as I run every other day it seems to be alright but >2 days = pain, I can run through it but it definitely isn't super comfortable. I do bodyweight workouts on my off days and play soccer once a week as well.
>>
>>42128383
Not really significant because both times are slow, 20 minutes is barely a starting point for a 5k if you have experience running while 12 seconds requires a minimum amount of training but training nonetheless.
>>
>>42133185
I'm a 5k runner with a time of 15:30. I'm at my college's track and will try some 100s
>>
>>42133185
Except it's a lot harder to train speed than endurance
You can build lung capacity, lactic threshold and even increase number slow twitch fibres
How many sprinters end up in sports like NFL or soccer. How many endurance runners bulk up and make the same change?
>>
today I ran ~5.76km in 28:29 which beat my old best by 45 seconds. With that I also met my goal of running 5k in under 25 so I'm really happy.
I was quite surprised because recently I barely ran, once a week max. I find it kind of difficult to do it more often with also lifting 3 times a week and playing badminton 2-3 times a week. Wish I could do it more regularly.
Still, compared to a year or 2 ago my endurance is so much better now, back then running 5k in 30 was already pretty difficult.

Attempt#1
Been running 10k with no training. Currently 7 seconds off mile or and 6 off 800 pr
distance is harder to train
>>
>>42133412
What is this even supposed to mean?
You run a 15:30 5k but a 13s 100
Surely that proves that it's easier to train distance than speed
Not to mention how often do sprinters move from 2 to 4 or 4 to 8 even 8 to the 1500
Very rarely goes the other way

Attempt #2
had to bring up arm to hit button... Just did an isolated test .7 to move arm to running position and back... Probably subtract about .35 from time
>>
>>42133456
This is without training speed though I just improved by .6 seconds by running again after waiting 6 minutes
>>
>>42133474
Yeah and you also run a 15:30 5k which is probably equivalent to about a 10.7s 100 in terms of how many athletes can do it
>>
>>42133507
Currently in around 16:10 5k shape...
>>
>>42133520
Ok so run an 11.00
Look at the Olympics, distances 800 and over have a mix of races and nationalities
Sprints, especially the 100 are dominated by West Indies and African Americans
Sprinting is 90% genetics whereas long distance can be trained...obviously genetics play a huge role at the top too but not like sprinting
>>
>>42133507
Still you're moving the goal posts both times you posted as achievable are bottom 99%
>>42133552
My times have dropped off further in the lower end of the spectrum. An improvement in a 10k and 6 seconds off 800
>>

It sounds like the sprinter elitist is comparing an 8 minute mile to a 4:45 mile and saying that the the miler who can run a 4:45 mile can easily perform a 24 minute 3 mile
Neither time is incredible but one is incredibly worse than the other

Don't do it, my lad. I tried it myself and it never went away, just got worse. I have finally seemed to beat it by resting, icing, and rolling my foot out with this spikey ball.
>>
I used to get pain in the back of my knee after running when I was a beginner, but then I fixed my form, so it went away for the most part. The funny thing is that I literally never got shin splints, even though they seem to be one of the most common running related injury.
>>
well thanks for the workout /fit/ it was fun. I'll continue posting time trials in this thread as the xc season begins. my plan to reimmerse myself into the world of running was actually to do sprint work today and tomorrow morning then progress to mileage. sprinting is just so refreshing! hardly feels like work at all. Although I was going to start with 400s as that is closer to the distance of 4 miles

Jesus christ, so much focus on times on this board. Why not just run because of pure pleasure? I usually just set like a time between 1.5 hours to 3 hours and go out running. Don't mind the speed. Load up some good music. And just run whereever I feel like.

I explore the city, the forests, at my own pace. I run roughly around 5:30 minute. 21 km is almost standard but I'm having fun. And mentally it's the best thing I've ever done. I feel no stress at all anymore.

Running because you need to beat some arbitrary set numbers will inevitably end up getting yourself injured.

I just beat 40 min in the 10k this April (39:45), now I train to keep the same pace for a half in october for a 1:24:23. Hadn't race a half since last october where I got 1:31:50 but I think it's double since I now comfortably run 55-60 mpw as opposed to 40 last year

>finally start running in May
>run every other day consistently for two months, improve from running barely a mile to seven miles without a break
>heat index jumps up to 115 this week, decide to take a break

>legs which felt fine while running and on off days are suddenly sore as shit and a little unstable after three days without running at all

Is this normal? Is it just running DOMS type shit? Should I wait until the discomfort stops to run again, or would running relieve the discomfort?
>>
>>42142813
Wait. In these cases, letting your legs get some rest is almost always the answer. If the pain remains, you should visit a doctor.
