Seems like a good way to die if you lift anything more than the bar.

This. I was browsing amazon last night to see if there was any good prime deals on a power rack and fuck that. I'd have bought one from walmart already if I wanted to die.

Each rack on Amazon has the weight capacity in the description. I do not know much about what qualifies as a high quality rack, but just from glancing at a few, I do know that 500lbs is a low capacity.
Being a dyel, I do not think I would ever exceed the capacity, but I would prefer to go for something with a higher capacity. That way, if I ever decide to do a heavy rack pull, or if I completely fuck up, slip and fall backwards while squatting, I will know that the rack is not going to crumble under the weight of the falling barbell.
With a piece of equipment that you are going to frequently use and essentially trust to protect you from potentially dangerous situations like a failed squat, go for durability.
