Even though my fetishes restrict me to like 1% of the market, it's still overwhelmingly BIG.

I barely watch actual JAV to be honest.
A career translating porn has made me so numb towards just ordinary "Girl gets fucked" things that I can't even muster up arousal towards 3D things.
Not because I find the girls unattractive or anything, but because my fetishes have evolved to a point where most of them just aren't possible in reality, so I have to find respite in 2D stuff.

The first series is some kids go to a new world, have an adventure, then face off against a big bad villain at the end. Pretty generic magical fantasy story, my first attempt at a series and hardly my magnum opus. Still, I'm having a great time writing it. The next one is roughly the same formula, people getting together and going on an adventure, except with a lot more humor keeping the spirit of kitchen table RPGs. I played a ton of Magic back in the day and have lurked /tg/ for what feels like years now, so it's a big inspiration. I also have a pseudo superhero series planned, but that's farther down the road. My only hope is that someone reads them and likes them and lets me know. It does wonders for an author's state of mind when he knows people are reading his stories.

>>42101420
Sales have been slow, mostly my family and a few others who picked it up out of curiosity have read it. Advertising is harder than I thought and costs a lot of money and time. Ironically, my close friend has a friend who reads indie novels for fun, and he happened to pick up the book before he knew me. Small world, huh?

It's mostly for fun. I write because I feel the urge to tell the story, the money and fame has almost always been second to that. There have been days where I sit down and blast 8-13k in a day and weeks where I don't even think about it. Like a lot of things in life, it comes and goes in waves.

Maybe you can give feedback. I have two book ideas. One is essentially a modern retelling of Moby dick thematically but it shows ahabs (a noir detective) slow descent into madness culminating in his evolution into a pure monomanical character as he was in the original throughout and the whale is a mindless criminal (I liked how the "villain" of Moby dick had no characterization except that placed upon it by the "hero" and I like how ahab was able to have incredible character depth despite being so one dimensional).

The other is a take on groundhog day, except instead of one day it is a 25 year cycle and it lasts for eternity. I was thinking of a non linear narrative where each chapter talks about a given year. So in one chapter it will be the 2,586,457,086th year of the cycle and the character will be grappling with the moral ramifications of subjecting someone to an artificial cycle by having an ai implant memories into their mind while the next chapter will be the 10,574th year of the cycle and the character will start to realize the extent of how alone he feels despite being a world famous celebrity/polymath (given all the time he will have had to master all the different skills which make him famous). Do these sound interesting whatsoever

As long as you show Ahab's descent in progressive steps you have a winner in the first one. Way too many writers make the sudden jump "Oh my character is a hero now" or "Oh my character is suddenly bad now" instead of that slow progression. It always starts small, making little excuses to justify doing bad things, or going against authority repeatedly because you're curious and then suddenly you're the bad guy or completely obsessed with what you're after. Falling Down (1993) did this so well that it wasn't until the end of the movie that I realized our hero was now the bad guy. I would encourage you to try to draft your own ideas for a story rather than doing retellings, but retellings can be good springboards.

On your second one, time distortion is ALWAYS fun to play with. Flash forwards, backwards, and sideways are so much fun to use to hide things from the reader until the critical moment. Think of it as converging branches of a big tree; all the little mysteries keep piling up and things get more and more complex, more questions keep rising, and then in the climax a big answer is given and it all comes crashing down. If you play the game like that I could see it being very enjoyable, but your writing is always your own so write how you want to write. Anything else, namely emulating other writers, is just cheating yourself out of the experience.

How does another person smoking weed affect your life?
>>
>>42103680
Yeah, one of my favorite parts of Moby dick was a throw away line to most: when they're at the harbor, ahab is sitting on deck smoking his pipe and then tosses it into the ocean. That one line shows that at that instant he no longer cared for pleasure, no longer wanted to enjoy anything, and it is then the reader begins to witness the monster his chase had made him. I wanted to write about becoming the monster. I figured first it might be things all of us would consider; maybe being a little rough with some scum that has information, working late, maybe even getting angry at the guy he is pursuing (letting his professional life dictate his emotional self). Then the obsession takes root and by the end the reader will struggle to decide who to root for. I guess retelling was a bad way to put it, rather I wanted to explore themes from the book I rarely see in literature (that nothing exists within itself, having a one dimensional character with depth, having an antagonist that both the other characters and the readers can pile characterization on because they are a blank slate in isolation).

For the second I feel it is more ambitious because there is so much I could do I wouldn't know where to begin. I don't know if I would want to parallel the way I structure the telling of the main characters torture to show the life stages of a man (infancy, childhood etc), the stages of acceptance (denial, bargaining, etc except this would be on a loop itself as after millions of years of acceptance he begins to deny the absolute nature of his fate again) or to just explore the sheer scale of eternity.

Thanks for the input though, me writing anything is at least 4 or 5 years out I'd say but I've been cultivating these ideas in my head for a few years now. Hopefully I'm not a bad writer (was told I was a good writer in a thread here like 3 years back where I went on a rant about how I would ruin Doug funny's life but I don't think that counts)
