I'm a beginner looking to run 6 miles at a 9 min pace

I weigh 230 @ 6'2" and I'm cut enough to see abs without flexing. Is this a good starting program?

Monday:

2 mile run (easy effort, conversational pace)

Tuesday:

OFF running day, other workouts, strength etc

(good day to ride 60 - 90 minutes)

Wednesday:

Hill Repeats: start with 10:00 easy jog as warm up

then 7 x 50m hill sprint, walk down

Thursday:

OFF running day, other workouts, strength etc

(good day to ride 60 - 90 minutes)

Friday:

Track: start with 10:00 easy jog as warm up

2 miles (8 laps) sprint straights, walk curves

Saturday:

OFF running day, other workouts, strength etc

(good day to ride 60 - 90 minutes)

Sunday:

4 mile run (easy effort, conversational pace)

Does anyone else get a problem with teeth hurting when they run?
>have good shoes
>run on grass where I can
>brush teeth twice daily
>dentist says teeth are fine
>>
>>42087965

I get that issue if I'm very congested - the sinus pressure puts a lot of stress on the gums, then running makes my teeth hurt quite a bit
>>
>>42087973
Feels bad man. I find it helps if I brush my teeth right before I run. But I also blow my nose after I brush my teeth so maybe it's a sinus thing like you say
>>
>>42087949
If your goal is 6 miles at 9 minute pace, I would cut back on the sprints and focus more on distance. you want to be building slow twitch muscles. Start by trying to get the distance, and maybe mix in some fartleks. Once you can do the distance, start pushing the pace to where you're out of your comfort zone, but are still able to maintain it. 2 days off per week looks about right though.
>>
>>42087965
I've heard of people having this problem because of the air passing by their teeth so much while they're breathing through their mouth. does it happen with other cardio stuff too?
>>
Once I reach my ideal weight can I just run and do light cardio to get leaner, or do I have to reduce my caloric intake?
>>
>>42088081
I get gassed out quickly(probably because I'm 230) and often can't maintain focus for the whole hour. Running is usually extremely boring and im often unmotivated, is there anything I can do to improve stamina or motivation? Maybe extra runs in the morning of my training days?
>>
>>42088102
Only running.
I do get extremely nauseous while I swim though.
All other sports are fine. I play squash and volleyball regularly
>>
>>42088131
I usually make a play list and don't stop running until the playlist is over. Kinda helps "just one more song"
"just one more verse"
>>
>>42086575
Don't have a mile time but my half mile was 3:04, is this okay?
>>
I strained a muscle training on Weds and I had to miss all my runs since then. I normally do about 15 miles a week and this week I am at 6 miles.

I feel like a lazy slob for having 4 rest days in a row. Going to do an easy 3 miles tomorrow morning to get back in to the swing of things and start my week off right.

Fastest mile is 7:04. Average mile is 9:10.
>>
>>42088213
Tbh if you really push yourself and you're only doing a short run you could get half mile time to 2.00 or 2.30.
If you're running long distance though 6.00 mile is v respectable

find somewhere interesting to run if you can. makes life way better. pic related was earlier this week for me.

anyway, double days are a good, common way to up milage if you can fit in the time, and it'll help with endurance. It's not going to give you all the same benefits in the end, but it's definitely still helpful. You could also try cycling to increase endurance, seeing as you can typically go to more interesting places that way.

The best way I've found though is to get a running buddy. getting out the door when I'm on my own is a pain in the ass, and running with someone means you can talk and help motivate each other on shitty days.
>>
>>42086575
I'm 5'11"
Haven't ran since highschool.
Managed a 6.30 mile on my first run in 3 years. My job involves walking swiftly for 10-12 hours a day though.
>>
>>42086575
at my uni's running trail my usual run is 4.5 miles and the fastest i've ever done it is a little over 32 mins

I got my heart rate down to 47bpm last winter is that good
>>
>>42088134
are you continuously breathing through your mouth with squash and volleyball though?

>>42088228
I always get that feeling when I take off days for nagging injuries. I usually end up doing lots of core, rolling, and stretching, which is annoying enough that I stop feeling bad about it

I left the couch about a year ago and finally got my mile down to just under 5 minutes today. Took a shitload of work to get here though.
>>
>>42088292
47 bpm is pretty good. for reference, I think most adults have a resting heart rate of like 70-80, and most of my team mates are low to mid 30s (uni team)
>>
>>42087949
I just run. I got my 5 miles down to under 35 minutes recently by just running 5 miles 2 times a week and 1.5 miles 2 times a week.
>>
>>42088358
what did you take away from your training?

Like what would you tell yourself as a total noob to running to do?

I wish I could run as fast as you anon, but I cant seem to break 9min/mile easy runs, im not fat at all either
>>
>>42088513
I mean on top of all the generic advice (sleep hygiene, good diet ect) running is really just about going for it. Make sure you have good discipline both in your schedule and in actually running.

You've probably heard this all before but warm up properly, stretch 7 days a week and use a foam roller on your quads, calves and dem der IB bands. Also don't neglect leg strength.
>>
>>42088596
>Make sure you have good discipline both in your schedule and in actually running.
Gawd, I would say this is my biggest problem. I try to run 2-3 times a week, recently that has been once a week but I do swim 4X (MTWTh) and lift EoD (SL).
>Also don't neglect leg strength.
What workouts in the gym do you recommend I do for legs and running gains?
>>
>>42088932
To state the obvious if you don't run you won't get better.
As far as strength is concerned just squats and cleans man. I run 40m, 400m 1.5 miles and 8kms so there may be some benefits from those as well.
>>
i decided to go serious with runing so i did 26 miles in last week , but still not pacing where i want to sit, i want to do 4:40 km average to sit at 1:40 or lower half mar till september

Any tips for keeping breathing down? I seem to always start breathing heavily and quickly after a mile and it continues for the whole run. I'm 5'9" and 150lbs or so. I only run 1-3 times a week for 3-5 miles each time I go.

If you're not used to running, its better to start with c25k.
But for now just don't go running until they stop hurting. Also, watch a few form videos and see if you're doing anything wrong. From what i've seen, the most common cause is usually overstriding.

Its amazing how real this shit can feel when your running.

This is what i get for neglecting cardio. If i lift Mon/Tues Thurs/Fri is running only once a week on Saturdays sufficient for cardio? My goal is to be able to run a 5k at a reasonable time for general health/wellness reasons and the athleticism. Hurt my knee somehow yesterday. I was running on a trail I've done at least 100 times. Slow pace that I can easily handle any day of the week. Only thing I can think of that might've caused it is my shoes. They have probably 400 miles on them but they still felt fine and the fight was perfect.

>Is it possible that worn out shoes can cause knee pain?

I've never experienced this with any other older shoes but I've also put the most miles on these ones.
>>
>>42091492
Yes, old shoes get worn out and affect your step.

However there are 1000 other reasons as why you might have hurt your knees.

Just rest until you run again.
>>
>>42091349
you seem upset about a fun little twist on on running aps
>>
How do you monitor your cadence? I feel like I take too few steps compared to the recommended 180 spm, but counting every second step while using a timer during running seems too awkward. I guess I could put some 180 bpm hardcore on my mp3 player and run to the beat lol.
>>
>>42088273
Looks like a great way to break your ankle.
>>
>>42089533
Start getting your breathing ready before you run. A few minute before you head out, inhale all the way, as much as you can, and push all of the air out of your lungs. Do this a few times, and then see if you can breathe around 6 breaths per minute by breathing very deeply and exhaling entirely.

Your lungs are a huge muscle inside of you that will be worked pretty hard from you run. If you've been sitting all day or breathing fairly shallow from lack of exertion your lungs need to warm up before your run also.
>>
>>42091551
try a metronome, that music idea isnt too bad either
>>
>>42090412
Check your form and your shoes.

Your shoes are most likely shit. Things to look at while running shoe shopping:
>arch support (do you need it)
>Stabilization (Do you need it)
>Wide shoes (do you have wide feet)
>Elevated heel
>Do you naturally roll your foot inward or outward

If you have a running store near you go to them and ask them to fit your for a pair of shoes.

I don't use miles so I don't know actually, but I've run 10k with a time of 4:12/km.

I ran in terrain (without a path, so pretty rough) today and it was amazing. I also tried running on some cliffs by the water which was fun but hardly effective as far as training goes. What are your favourite running places /run/?
>>
>decide to run through the fields today

>>42091551
Cadence is important to avoid injuries. As long as it's quick enough to reduce impact it should be fine so I usually just think about my feet and pay attention to the force impact - if you feel you're stomping your feet then pick up the cadence.

Also, listen to the strokes while running.
>>
>>42092369
Went running in terrain first time the other day and it was fun as fuck. Your mind is kept busy trying its best to manoeuvre across the roots and stones that litter the ground.

Definitely beats the monotony of running track/road.

Came across a lake during my run and took a quick dip, was godly.
>>
>>42092403
I actually took a dip after my run as well, it felt so good. Summertime running is the best
>>
>>42092390

I did get a 7 and a half minute pace for 3 miles two days ago. Which is pretty good for me.

Also, I need new shoes, I'm 6'5 so big feet and all that, but I don't want to blow $150 on shit I'm going to run through. Prefer to keep it in the $50-$100 range since I'll likely wear them for day to day stuff, too. Any recommendations?
>>
>>42089636
Second this. My first 5k switching to merrells I thought my calves were going to pop. Have to build milage back up as if you've never run before. Once you do running becomes so much more fun, and like anon said, no injuries and you'll get faster and great form. I'm a 2.52 marathoner barefoot/minimalist, but struggled to break sub 3hr in "normal" shoes.

20min 5k is my objective. Last I've ran was about a month ago, 5.5km in 24'05''. good on you, m8, I'm deathly afraid of going running again and seeing how much I obviously lost. Did you find deadlifting heavy helped your running?

I've been running twice or thrice a week for 12~16 month, but I usually run 5 to 8~10Km max. I'm also doing a weight lifting routine 3 times a week.

>>
>tfw legs feel constantly tired
I know that easy runs should somehow make them feel more rested, but they don't. I don't know if it's because I go too heavy or because I'm too much of a beginner. I also walk a lot, maybe 2-3 km a day, maybe that also contributes to it.

Just ran for the first time in over 3 years. 24min 5k on a hilly route. Better than I expected but I used to run 5k in 18min when I was 15 so kinda feelsbadman. How long will it take me to get below 20?
>>
>>42095573
It's called shin splits and as a beginner you're likely getting them because you either run with a bad form or have bad shoes.

There is a lot of running form videos on youtube, look up a few. tl;dr is that you should be making lots of small steps rather than fewer longer ones so that you hit the ground mid-foot-ish and below your centre of gravity.

Then get actual running shoes, don't run in just random sneakers, it makes a lot of difference. They cost 100-150 bucks but it's basically the only investment you have to make, so overall running is still quite cheap.
>>
>>42092995
Nice one. How did you get on? My brother, sister and a couple of club mates ran it also and they all had a struggle so I don't know how I PB'd.

I think the problems came when I started lapping people on the seafront and I couldn't get to the water stations properly. Some bloke I was talking to said it was the first time he's ever had to walk in a Half and that was because he couldn't get any water while lapping people so he had to stop to get some. He still did it in about 1:22 though.

You could be stretching too much or not enough. Could be dehydrated. You could be going too hard/fast for what your body can do. Make sure you're getting your electrolytes.
>how long I need to rest
Give it a day or two, and then go back the next day on an easy jog. Listen to your body. If it's still bothering you, you can ask a doctor.

So I ran half a mph faster and also started 5x5 stronglifts on 2nd month and I can run for half as long. I run on off days. >>
Finally got some time to contribute. I do start in city marathons and halfs.
My usual routine includes 6 training pet week:

Monday: Tresholds, around 10km with pace 3:30-3:50/km.
Tuesday: long progressive run, 14-16km.
Wednesday: Easy run, around 10km.
Thursday: long progressive run, 16-18km. Starkingu with easy run pace, ending with 3:30min/km.
Friday: free time - Beer with frienda Saturday: long run, 22-32km.
Sunday: easy run.

As addition I try to do foam rolling, streching and core stability at least once a week(each) but i hate this crap though it is essential to avoid injuries.

My 42km personal best is 03:05 and 1:23 for the 21km.

Currently running with tom tom cardio music and this is a piece of crap. I need to change it for garmin.

I tried a variety of running shoes but didn't find anything that felt quite right. On a suggestion from a running friend, I tried a cheap pair of Nike Flex 2014 from our local factory outlet (old design, but way cheaper than usual). Now I only wear them, and get newer pairs from time to time. I don't really notice I'm wearing them, even for long runs, which is exactly what I want from a shoe.

How do you manage to not get pain under your feet? I get ulcers and pretty bad pain if I run over a certain distance (like an hour's worth of running). Is it slowly upping the mileage? I run with 'normal' running shoes and mostly on concrete, and I would imagine running barefoot or with thinner soles would be even more painful than it is now.
>>
>>42100963
1. Better socks most likely for the ulcers.
2. For pain check your running technique.

Weight
Gait
Barefoot - Minimalist - Maximalist

To run 6 miles at a 9 minute pace you should just be focusing on running more each day. Only running 8 miles a week won't cut it. I'd ramp up the amount you run each day as well as the distance. Sprints will not increase your speed for a longer run like six miles. Rather you should run 4 miles Mon - Wed, then have Thursday be your long run day of six miles, and have Friday be a rest day of two miles.

I used to run in high school. My mile PR was 5:00 and my 5K was 17:58 ( I was decent, I gave up trying to run in college ) so I can answer most questions.
>>
>>42088513
I agree with >>42088596 , the best way to get better at running is to run more. My freshman year of high school my first 5k was 30+ minutes. My coach came up with this challenge called the 500 mile club - just run more than 500 miles over the summer and into before the season starts. I did that and brought my 5k down to 19

>>42089619
Running barefoot is a different experience, and running barefoot on the beach is much different than running barefoot. It's harder since you sink into the sand. Honestly, I would reccomend it - itd be better to just find a trail or road, but if you can't then it's fine. It's just more work for you. You sort of get the same effect running in the snow.

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but how often can I sprint at maximum effort? And how should I structure my sprinting workouts? Right now I've been warming up with a 1600m light run around a track, followed by 6-8 sets of 40 metres at maximum effort, them 2-3 400s at maximum sustainable effort after the max effort, then 800m slow then a walk. It's exhausting, and I didn't really look into anything when I started doing it, just sort of started running one day with the idea of sprinting for fat-loss/exercise. I've only been doing it once a week so far and it's very exhausting, is once a week enough, or too much, or should I be training this more or less?

How would you modify this?

(I'm a bodybuilder, my cardio endurance is decent, I can run 10km in about 38 minutes at a steady pace, but I'm not fast, training this for fat loss and supplemental leg conditioning)
>>
Why am i not getting back into shape?

Been running a lot in my youth but at some point i stopped, did nothing and got chubby. So i decided to start again 4 months ago. I have a 5 km route that I run 2-3 times a week but I cannot manage to run that distance straight. Always need a break since my pulse gets too high at the last third.

Some would say that's normal but i haven't been improving for 2 months now.

If you run longer runs on a treadmills you need one with a bit of incline, otherwise you will slowly damage your legs/knees regardless of what you do
>>
I started running every second day this summer, but fuck me my lower left leg hurts like a motherfucker, can't go today because it's hard to even walk
Am I doing it wrong or what
>>
>>42102076
>I can run 10km in about 38 minutes at a steady pace, but I'm not fast
>body builder

Why do people even bother coming here to lie.

No 'body builder' could run at that speed consistently for 10km. Even club runners need considerable training to reach sub 40minute 10ks.
>>
What clothes do you guys run in? Any recommendations? I recently bought son H&M things pretty cheap thinking it would be quite bad but I quickly realised that it was some of the best runners clothing I've ever had. I also recently saw that they sponsor some great ultra runners like Tommy Puzey.
>>
>>42106322
Probably. Are you slapping your feet against the ground? Are you stretching too much before/after you run?
>>
>>42106322
Sounds like shin splints?
>>
>>42106338
>What clothes do you guys run in?

Some old running shorts and a breathable t-shirt. Sweatband also to keep sweat from getting into the eyes. Running shoes are whatever is comfortable for you and provide enough support.

Wear an extra layer if it's cold but remember you will warm up considerably during your run.
>>
>>42106338
I just wear all my old sport stuff from highschool. I did get some compression shorts that I've been wearing for my long runs, though.
>>
>>42104446
i just started running the other day, and the time my phone measured was 4.8 minutes.
>>
How do I longer my longer runs, in this fucking heat?
>>
>>42106451
1. Wear sun protection. Not just sunscreen. You'll sweat it off and burn. Long sleeves. Jogging pants. Light, full coverage. Breathable. No rain slicker wind jacket shit. You'll stew in your own juices.

2. Carry water.
>>
>>42106451
Also, run slower.
>>
>>42106451
Run early in the morning
>>
>>42092945

Fucking love merrell running shoes.
>>

>1. Wear sun protection. Not just sunscreen. You'll sweat it off and burn. Long sleeves. Jogging pants. Light, full coverage. Breathable.

I do, as much as it sucks. (though I do wear shorts, my socks are pretty tall usually)

>2. Carry water.

I wear a belt/bottle holder.
Protip: water is handy for rinsing out a wound, too.

>>42106491
>Also, run slower.
Funny you should say that, I just decided to try the MAF method, and cap my HR a bunch lower than usual. Should be tough with all the up and down on my route...

>>42106501
>Run early in the morning
When that is more applicable, I'll do it. Long days for now. (north of 60 degrees)
>>
My run keeper tells me that I've run about 200km too much in my Adidas Energy Boosts, so I should probably get new ones. What's the consensus on what to get? I plan to run 10k up to Marathons in terms of distance

>>
>>42106323
>>42106508
I've tried most "minimalist /barefoot" shoes and Merrell are the best. Vibrams I just didn't get on with and most others have too much padding even though they are meant to be minimal drop
>>
>>42102693
update: i'm back from my run, and according to the descriptions here, i do not believe that i am suffering from shin splints.
However, i simply powered through the pain from the DOMS, but now my legs are seriously shot to shit. As in, i had trouble putting on my underpants after showering. Imma take a day off tomorrow, this can't be healthy.

When marathon training, I mostly ran on the beach. During the last 5 miles of a 20 mile run, I took off my shoes and socks and ran in the water. It was a huge mistake.

I've got flat feet and have big arch support in my shoes. I learned that I can't run without that.
>>
Allright, i need some running advice. Looks like i'm heading back in the Army again after a couple of years studying, so i will need to hit about 13.00 on the 3 km tests, no later than at the end of this year. Anyone have any recommended cardio set-ups?

My personal best from a few years ago was about 13.40, and i got that just by running a lot as part of my normal work out(30 min fast jog and some 4x4 intervalls and so on).

I havent tested in a while, but i'm probably not below 15-ish, or at least around that.

I'm about 190cm tall, around 110 kg as well. Was about 105 kg when i did 13.40, so i think i have it in me at least.

get a bicycle and learn how to move forward for great distances. Break yourself. But do not over train. Make sure your body is responding. Supplement bicycling with walking and running. Once you're no longer unhealthy slowly transition to more running. Add mixed terrain and mixed efforts as you become stronger. Avoid pollution from cars and whatnot as best as possible, also please don't run in cheap shoes. Get them fit by a professional since it's you probably never did that before.

focus on manually breathing

it sounds really retarded but force yourself to take really deep and fast breaths the entire time you're running

It's a girl from Katawa Shoujo, anon. It's a VN about crippled girls. It's kinda ironic in the way that the girl who likes to run have no legs, and a girl who paints have no arms.
>>
>>42108447
I usually don't even stretch anymore, and I run 3-8 miles a day. Start off slow and work up to a good speed. But those are pretty good stretches.
When I do stretch, I usually do those, minus the ankles and back stretches. Throw in some jumping jacks at the beginning.
>>
>>42105730
>>42105881
If your problem is that you can't run more than about a mile without stopping, then try running slower.
>>
>>42108716
Okay thanks. The ankle shit feels a bit weird, but I guess that they are good for something.

The funniest part is when she stretches her mechanical calves.

>>42108447
>hold for 12 seconds
I do the starting stretching stretches, and they are supposed to be held for a minute, so one fifth of that seems kinda low.
>>
>>42108855
I usually go 10,15,30 seconds for any stretches. I don't think you need to go for that long. In fact, it might even be bad to go for that long.
>>
>>42108855
>The funniest part is when she stretches her mechanical calves.

>>
>>42111421
>Would running everyday help?
>Asking for a friend.
yes. running every day is good but rest days are also good but whatever works with your routine of course.

currently I am running 5 days with 2 days rest.
jog at whatever pace is comfortable.. then up the pace, up the distance etc.
the biggest killer of cardio is lack of motivation in my opinion. stretching is important as well so peep some guides for that
>>
>>42111474
Well, there is a difference between them. I want to track my progress.
>>
My achilles is sorta hurting after running. I make sure to stretch after the first kilometer, but after yesterday's run this shit feels cramped up the lower back part of my legs. It's not a stinging or intense pain, it's just there and uncomfortable. Am I maybe stretching wrong or not enough? Could it be an issue with the ground I am running on? (Woods, mountains)

For referece my mobility is pretty bad in general, can only touch my toes with pain.
>>
>>42112789
oh hey, I just had this problem. for me it was caused by adding lots of climbing to my routine all at once. what worked for me was to roll my calves a fair bit before and after each run, and each night stand on the stairs and lower my heels slowly, and then go quickly back up 15 times, 2-3 sets. took 3-5 days to feel better.
not clear this is your problem, but if one calf has significantly more knots when you're rolling, that's probably it.
>>
>>42111416
as long as you keep up your lifts I can't see any reason it would
>>
>>42106565
not getting injured after running one mile does not mean it's a good idea.
>>
>>42104595
I like you :)
>>
>>42105848
Tell that to most of the modern ultra runners, they usually only do LCHF / Paleodiets
>>
>>42112789
Stretch.

This is a pretty common problem when you start mid / frontfooting , your muscles aren't used to it.

Wait til it clears then resume.

I would guess that they want to keep themselves as lean as possible.
I've read that our livers can store about 100g of glycogen and 400g in our muscles, that's 2000kcal.
If you're at a low BF% you won't have a lot of extra energy to burn so you'll probably wanna do a carb load or use power gels etc. during the race.
>>
rotator cuff gone :'(. Running is still OK right?
>>
>>42113265
I think they want to want to run as fast as possible as long as possible.

How lean they are wont matter. Just look up some videos.
>>
>>42113265
Keep in mind that's probably right after eating, and a lot of that goes to metabolic processes. Theoretically if you're doing keto you can metabolize fat directly into energy faster so you can run through your fat supply.

>>42113281
Rotator cuff is upper body so you should be okay but if it hurts in a way it shouldn't stop. That said I get pain behind my shoulders when I run long distance for some reason so be careful.

Good cushining not as stable as some other boost models good for road running not recommended if you go off road

I got the boost energy a week and love them

had the questar boost before that they where nice and I would have stuck with(nice price) them if I didnt have wierd shaped left heel
>>
>>42104631
Hmm, desu I'm not quite sure. Maybe just increase the length of all your runs? I can really only give good advice for when you'd like to run more - when I did xc I ran everyday except Sunday. You could also start slowly increasing the length of your long run each week, to slowly build up your endurance.
>>
>>42113375
No. Honestly they like a bad mix of the worst of everything.

large cushionng
bad stability
high drop
>>
>>42102084
You should just slow down your pace. Basically, slow it down every time you run until you can do your loop without stopping. You can even time how long it takes you to get your exact pace if you'd want. But yeah, slow down your pace, it's the best and easiest thing to do.
