I recently started lifting and i saw my friend who's been going for 3 years telling me that he always uses protein supplements (Don't know any of them the names but alot of them he just mixes with water and drinks in a bottle)
Can they actually improve my progress to gaining a body or are they just throwing away money?

Your protien intake can make or break you regardless of whether its from powder or an animal source. The powder is especially good post and pre workout for quick absorbtion.
