The tribe that doesn't share resources doesn't grow to as large of a size or dies out in a famine.

We have some real world examples of hunter gatherers. Social status among males is based on who can distribute the most goods to the tribe. Gifts are an excess only the strong can afford. Think about it this way; hoarding meat makes a person look like starving person who barely hunts enough to feed himself while giving a bunch of meat to your homies makes you look like a big badass hunter.

Similar sorta thing really to hood people blowing money on giving cheap shit to their crew, strengthens bonds between people and the biggest gift giver is the natural leader of the group.
