Before I had a cellphone, I carried a vita. I used it for games, wifi, and listening to music. Usually during commutes but also if I got into work before my shift.

Don't bring it to the gym ,it will distract you from the reason you are there. If you have to game, play one round of a mobage and then get back to work.

The only time I can see this actually working to your advantage is if you are doing your cardio on a stationary bike.

Aside from that, I think trying to play video games, even just random portable ones on your Phone or 3DS, or whatever in the middle of a set is foolish and I would also not recommend using it one the treadmill, as it might fuck up your form.
