>>
How do I stop getting shin splints when I run trail? I've got a nice pair of shoes and didn't have a single problem when I ran on treadmills, is my form just shit?
>>
>>41901524
What is your diet like?

Running and yoga has helped me form lovely big shits that i do first thing on a morning. Don't have to think about it for the rest of the day.

>>41901579
Probably a form problem. How do you land on your feet/ run when coming down hill?
>>
>>41901483
Don't overdo it and try not to run on cement. You can tell if it feels right or not.
>>
>>41901579
Don't push yourself as much as you would on a treadmill. Give it a couple weeks and your footing will improve.
>>
I need to buy new shoes, what brands are recommended? I've been using a pair of nikes but I've heard their running shoes aren't that great.
>>
>>41901590
On the ball of my foot mostly, should I be landing with a flat foot?
>>
>>41901579
Is it muscle or bone pain? If it's muscle, get a foam roller and smooth that shit out before every run. In fact, roll out your whole legs and you'll feel great
>>
How to avoid getting blisters from the heat under my feet? I can only rarely run trail, so mostly asphalt etc. I'm running on Vibrams.
>>
>>41901601
Find a store near you that lets you jog outside or on the treadmill. Try out a bunch of options. Everybody is different and fits best with different brands
>>
do u guys use any smartwatch?
What smartwatch do you use?
>>
>>41901610
Try shifting a little forward onto your mid-foot and try to 'absorb' the impact of landing with your entire leg.

Here's a vid that may be of some help.

>>
>>41901483
I've started running 2 months ago. It was more kinda interval training. Started from 1min of jogging and 4min of fast paced walking. Did that 8 times in one cardio session. My weight was 104kg and I havent had any issues other than my calves hurting as fuck due to living sedentary life for like last 4 years.
Keep your form in check - midfoot strike, it will engage your muscles more than joints so you will have to go through the initial phase of calves pain.
Keep your shoes in check - you can get good running shoes really cheap. You need some with stabilisation and enough place for your toes.
DONT FUCKING OVERDO IT. Just dont. Start easy and make your way up from there. Listen to your body, dont overtrain.
>>
>>41901478
Just ran my first 10k yesterday with my dad. He run's ultras so I felt bad slowing him down but he showed me a nice route around this area. Think I'm going to run a half marathon next year but desu I reckon I could do one in a few months fairly easily.
>>
>>41901637
I use one from Polar. They're pretty good to track your progression imo.
>>
Running programs for an "Advanced novice"? I've done C25k and can run a 5k without stopping (slow af though). What should my next step be for increasing my endurance and getting faster? My goal for right now is a sub 45 minute 10k eventually.
>>
>>41901478
are minimalist shoes with no padding a meme?
>>
>>41901732

>metal band

>>41901637

Get the casio with the default rubber(?) band but replace the band with a NATO watch strap. You now have an endurable watch and endurable band that together will last for many years and together cost less than £15.
>>
>>41901637

Garmin Forerunner 235. I replaced a Fitbit Charge 2. Got a refub off Amazon for $200. Only had it for 2 weeks now but I am pretty happy with it.

I had tons of problems with the Fitbit GPS and miss calculation of mileage and speed. The Garmin is way more accurate.
>>
>>41902317

depends

if you wanna buy them to be like a tarahumara dirt farmer or you wanna call yourself barefoot gary, then yeah. if you think they are neat, then go for it. from experience, i used to wear clunky asics and mizunos with stupid amounts of padding. since then i got some minimalist shoes and now i run in vapor gloves. i would never ever go back to regular shoes. they are just so clunky

the only downside to minimalist shoes is you start using your calves more and for a while, calves will feel it the next day
>>
>>41902317
I dunno. What's the meme supposed to be? Probably the new hot shit in town?

I've been running minimalist for a year now due to running like a retard from all the padding in regular shoes.

Took me like a month of short runs to get used to it, with my calves screaming murder. It takes perseverance to pull that off, from going half marathon to fucking dying from 2k.

It's not like some holy grail. you hate it or you love it, no middle road.
>>
>>41901478
>That pic
FUCK lad, making me so nostalgic. Why did I ever move away from the mountains?
>>
Trail running is comfiest. Nothing like just jogging for miles outdoors. It's like really fast hiking. Also shoes are a meme, don't overpay for special bullshit. Target running shoes are gonna preform the same as high end Brooks, as long as you don't have extremely fucked up feet.

Ive read online that IBS can cause this when running

Only if you do it wrong. Run on grass or sand this reduces shock considerably. You should be running on the balls of your feet not heel striking.

Current weight? Do you need to lose anything. Sub 45 is great normie tier pace (my 10k is 33.36) but very achievable. Don't just train distance and same pace. Have 1 session a week tempo or speed (on track if you can) and one session hill sprints with a few normal distance runs in there. Aim for 4 to 5 sessions a week, clocking 30 to 40miles a week

>>
>>41906800
>is this legit

I mean yeah kinda.

When you are running outside you have have propel yourself forward. When running on a treadmill you stay still and the treadmill propels your feet backwards. By giving an incline you now have to propel yourself upward. Seems logical to me.

Is a 17.9mph top speed sprint good for someone who spends like a 10:1 ratio lifting to running? I spent ~3 weeks doing nothing but cardio and running 5ks to practice for a 5k race, and at the last 50yards or so I sprinted in and reached that speed.

>>41909199
Not him but simple tempo intervals like 3x4min or something similar. To start total tempo time should be like 10-15 mins. Then if you want to progress raise the total time to like 20 min (so like 4x5 or 2x10). Try to mix up interval lengths. Usuall half time recovery is good for those. As for hills it depends a lot on the size and gradient of hill. Just find a big hill and mix in some tempo intervals up the whole thing, and some sprints (10-15 seconds)

>>
>>41905070
it depends on how long you're intending to run. if youre new to longer distances, id recommend just going slow, pretty much as slow as you possibly can in order to still even call it running. when i start long runs, i like to run at 3-5mph to start, and gradually get faster and faster. i'll generally go to about 8-9mph about 30 minutes and usually be going about 10-11mph at my last mile.
>>
Is Couch to 5k a good place to start ?
>>
>>41901483
Depends. Uphill is better than downhill on the knees. Run on dirt or rubber over cement. Don't overdo it if you're just starting out. Try to run with your muscles instead of your bones, so like minimize impact.

Well I currently fucking suck at running. I only have one lung after a bout with cancer a few years ago.

Anyway, I've decided that I want to train for a marathon. I might not win, and it may take me a year to do it, but I'm gonna try.

Any advice for noob marathon runners?
>>

So you're training for a 1.5 mile run. Your 1 mile time is over 17 minutes? Or your 1.5 mile is that long?

buy good shoes and you're good. You're just looking for excuses to stay fat. Anyway, fast walk is almost just as good and has no risks. It's the distance that counts.
>>
>>41906858
Lmao this is so wrong.

It is literally the same, just a different reference frame. Only difference is the air is stationary in the surface's frame when running outside, and the the air is stationary in your frame when running on treadmill. So there is no wind resistance which makes a big difference.

The worst part of running is that its measurable of how good you used to be. I used to break 5 minutes on a mile, I used to break 6 minutes on mile intervals. Now I'm running a 7 and it makes me sad

I've made it before but can I make it again anons?

Hiking is the superior activity. Running with a girl sucks because either you've gotta slow down a lot for her to keep up, and it's boring, or she can keep up with you, or worse, beat you, and that's embarrassing.

alright I could use some advice here for running.

I'm 6'1" male weight 245 last time I checked (2yrs ago).got a stomach.
applied for C.A.F so tried to get into shape and for 2-3 months I ran on cement and at the end I could do a 10 min jog but I don't think I lost weight.i also did a basic workout, push ups and sit ups etc.

SO I stopped working out for over a month and know I need to start running again.so what's the best way for a new running to get into it?

Doing the Hal Higdon Novice 1 for half-marathon.
I think it's going as well as it can,but I wish I could have a running partner and be faster.
Need to figure out how to open up my stride without going faster, because my lungs are tiring out before my legs are. Oh, I'm 6'5, 220, so I have long legs, I've just been couchpotatoing since highschool.
I also have a bit of an incremental sprint that I do for the last 100-200 yards, that I really open up for, but as is, it's a bit unsustainable.
Should I be trying to keep this 8~ minute mile pace for the eventual half/full marathons that I plan on running, or should I be trying to get them lower?

Greentext of my run yesterday
>run through a field, everything is peaceful and chill
>pass few fruit trees
>hear some birds crying out
>look up
>see two hawks or sth like that
>don't think much about it, besides that they look pretty cool
>suddenly, one of them comes diving down and attacks me from the back
>didn't see him, so it was unexpected and scared me shitless
>proceed running, thinking they'll leave me alone if the see me leaving their territory
>nope, they keep circling above me, crying and diving down when they're behind me
>start running faster
>they keep attacking, slightly scratching the back of my head
>hide under some low tree, to think about what I should do
>these shits have good eyes, so they see me through the tree
>they keep circling and crying, looking at me through the branches
>catch my breath and start sprinting from tree to tree - every time I'm in the open and too slow they attack from the sides
>eventually make it to some bigger trees, hear some crows
>notice they finally left
Probably the most exciting run I ever had.
Have any of you ever been attacked by birds of prey while running?

If you only want faster weight loss, you could probably burn more calories by riding a bike, since you probably can't run that long that often at your current fitness level.
If you just like running or don't have good bike paths where you live, then I'd say running is still a pretty good form of exercise when losing weight.

It's funny, today on my run (which wasn't even particularly difficult and I didn't have any trouble with) I was thinking of the old historical African hunters that would chase gazelle and whatnot down.
It's kind of weird, but I found a bit of a boost after that. Maybe it was just going into monkey-lizard brain mode and had me stop thinking about my legs or my breath.
>>
>>41920369
Thinking about yourself running faster really makes a difference. When I was in college I ran track and I remember on runs I would envision myself running a PR or winning nationals. Those runs I would end up running way faster than normal. Sometimes this isn't good, but it usually is.

Most of it seems to just be distracting your brain with something else. If you're constantly thinking about how much that stitch in your side is hurting, or how your lungs and legs are burning for more oxygen, you're gonna feel it real bad.

I tried interval sprints first time for 60m x 10 then 100m x10.
During 60m ones when I was on my 3rd sprint my arm beneath the shudder started hurting, on 5th-6th middle of my upper back and on last few it felt like my kidneys were giving out.

Then when I did 100m few days later non of those spots hurt but instead after 4-5th sprint it felt like someone stuck a knifes in my quads and my entire core hurt. Both were hurting more and more progressively. On 10th sprint I felt like I made my core cramping, but only during the run it self when I stop it let go.

Is this normal, maybe I'm doing something wrong?

If you're running a marathon your glycogen stores are gonna be depleted way before you finish. This will result in lower blood sugar, which means decreased performance. Having a sports drink will give you those necessairy sugars, fluid and salt. It's almost impossible to drink enough of these while running to supply sufficient sugar, which is where these gels come in handy. However, do not take too many, because you will get diarrhea.
Also, pre-hydrating would only work for about an hour (depending on temperature and humidity), any longer than that will leave you dehydrated, regardless of how much you drink before. Running on a full blatter is a pain in the ass as well.

Well, you need about 90g of sugar per hour when you're doing 3+ hours of continious running. You should try to get 2/3 of that from Gatorade and the rest from gels. I have no idea how much is in one of these packets, just try to get 30g of sugar from gels and 60g from Gatorade (comes down to about a quart I think) per hour.

We're ridiculously good at long distance running because we have sweat glands, allowing us to cool off independent of our breathing, and we're two-legged, allowing us to breathe independent of our pace.

I'd say a sub 12min 3k is good for a regular runner
If you can only run once a week you could try running a 20min tempo run. Warm up for 10-15 minutes and then run 20 minutes at a fairly hard effort, 80-88 % of maximum heart rate. Ideally, you'd do a long run, some shorter easy runs, tempo runs and speedwork, but if you can only run once a week, I think the tempo run will give you the best training gains

You run a tempo run at 80-90 % of your maximum heart rate. At that intensity, you're not working fully aerobically anymore, and you're inducing some lactic acid, but you're not exactly going into the anaerobic area either (that would be +90% of you max heart rate) where you're producing so much lactic acid it would be detrimental to your speed. Basically, at the tempo run pace you're producing some lactic acid, but your body can handle it, and you'll improve your ability to process lactic acid. If you go any faster, you'd go anaerobic, and you'd start to breath very hard and slow down because of the lactic acid. You'd feel it in your muscles too. A tempo run is sometimes described as a "comfortably hard effort". It's a great exercise and you can run them once a week, and you'll see good gains after a month or two, and it'll greatly improve your ability to run at a max effort, like at a 3k. Although a 3k is not a very long distance and doing some even harder (anaerobic) track work outs would be really beneficial as well

Thank you very much anon! I will test it next week. Going for 20 minutes, while trying to maintain a "comfortably hard effort". Any tips on how to find this pace and how to mantain it?

>only physical thing humans are good at

ahh yes I've seen plenty of animals absolutely excel at ice hockey
>>

Not them, but I find concentrating on my breathing helps me set my pace. If you're starting to struggle for breath, wheezing or can't breath with a slight gap in the in/out portion, slow down a bit. If you feel like you could easily hold a conversation then speed up slightly.
>>
>>41924347
You can't get under 10min in a 3k only running once a week. It would be hard even running 5-7 time a week

Birds can glide, which is cheating
>>
>>41925475
Got it. So basically fatigue but without running out of breath. I'm going to be slow af lmao, since my best is 6:25 min/km
>>
>>41925400
The easiest way to find the pace is to use a heart rate monitor. If you don't have one, you'll have to pay attention to your breathing and the feeling in your muscles. The basic rule is that you're breathing fairly hard, but you feel you can sustain the pace and you're legs aren't going stiff from lactic acid. Hence, "comfortably hard effort". Finding the correct pace can take some practice though, but if you're a beginner there's nothing wrong with being a bit conservative to avoid going too hard. You don't want to go into the anaerobic area, that's not the purpose of the exercise and you won't get the training benefits your going after with the tempo run.

You can also try a "talk test": if you can talk out loud sentences a few words in length, you're pretty much spot on. If you can talk full sentences effortlessly, you're going too slow, if you can barely burst out one word you're going too hard.

tl;dr sprinters are wasting their time

In terms of endurance we are better than any animal. We could be 99% of animals in a marathon, and 100% over 50 miles.

Well, it looks like I'm talking to myself next time, any recommended poems I should know?

I'm going to donate bone marrow on monday. How long should I wait before running again?

Aren't the sled dogs the only thing that are currently better than us, and we bred them specifically to do that, so it's not a big deal?

I go to gym 2-3 times a week, I always used skiing machine for cardio (10mins prior and after lifting), because treadmill scares me. I tried treadmill recently and I was surprisingly shit at running, gassed out in 5mins and legs really hurt.

I want to start morning runs. What is the best way to go about it? I know of c25k and that would be my plan, but I'm not sure how to combine it with gym workouts. I assume I shouldn't use treadmill in gym as to not overextend? Or is more - better?

I also want to use some android tracking to keep discipline. I found strava, is there anything better? Is smartwatch better than phone in a pocket?

No, not really, just describe your surroundings to yourself, that's what I've done!

It's a light jog anon. You're not doing HIIT or something like that.
You won't overtrain by adding 15 minutes of moving your fatass at a slow pace a day.

Joining the RAF, just been running 2.4k on a treadmill, 3x a week.
Current best time is about 10:50

Anything I can do to make running more enjoyable? Easier? Push through more?
Currently drink coffee and play some chill music.

It's nice to be a (aspiring) writer and think about my stories n stuff when I run. Feels like I'm not wasting my time.
>>
>>41901483
No. I'm prone to joint problems and back when I was running the problem was "shin splints", i.e. lower leg tendonitis/tendonosis.

But I didn't do any strength training either.

You have enough stores up to half marathon. Take a gel every 30 mins or so from 20kish

>>41925607

The man vs horse marathon is won most years by a horse.
>>
>>41926631
Because it's only 22 miles, not 26. And it's frankly an arbitrary point anyways because plenty of people are capable of the ultramarathons of 50/100 miles.
>>
>>41926995
The horse is also carrying a human. To be fair the men should be carrying a horse.

How is memory foam for running? Seemed like a good idea for running but before I use them I thought I'd ask the question. Any real negatives? I run 4k 3x a week right now as I've become a fatty again.
