Animal farm is an arguably worse book than 1984.
AF works great as a neat short summary of Orwell's views on socialism, but its really just that, its missing a proper storyline and character development.
1984 is basically the same story, but more fleshed out and entertaining. It also has some more of Orwell's opinions and fears mixed in.
I'd HIGHLY recommend them both however.

Well i'd recommend starting off with Animal Farm, its more about politics and a bit about philosophy, but its short and damn easy to read.
If you like it, read 1984 to get a little bit of background into what (((they))) are subjecting us to nowadays.
Seriously its scary how well Orwell predicted some of the stuff thats happening nowadays.
To round it off, you can read Houxleys Brave New World.
1984 and BNW are basically two sides of the same coin, with the one showing oppressive suppression of the people and the other the conditioning and degeneration of values.
These are pretty mainstream and easy to read, also not too long so you wont have to worry about giving up.

After that i'd recommend Grapes of Wrath.
Its a bit older and the conversation with the weird accents takes some getting used to, but this is a great book about family, home and how the banks are fucking everyone.

I'd also recommend Lord of the Flies.
Its a nice book about tribalism, the way groups act when left to their own devices and how fast we revert back to seemingly barbaric behaviour.
It showcases just what men are really like when not corrupted by civilization.

Funnily enough the best book I've read in the genre was very /fitlit/ - Bernarr MacFadden's How Success Is Won (1904). Besides being an early bodybuilder and health advocate he made untold millions in publishing. The advice is very practical and top-notch. He is however absolutely forgotten today.

Like in Canada and France where healthcare is free and the percentage cost of their medical industries relative to GDP is less than ours? Certain industries should never be run for profit, at least not without a free, nationalized alternative. Medicine and health care are at the top of the list. Shit like fire departments are up there too. Do you know that trains no longer run on time in Germany? You know why? Because they privatized it, and now shit breaks down or gets delayed as the rail industry cuts costs and increases profits. "But muh free market." Yeah, yeah, every hick thinks he's going to be one of the rich ones living the good life, not one of the poor shmucks spending 50% of his income on water just to keep on living once every industry and resource becomes a private monopoly in your utopian free market wet dream. Somehow you turds always hang on to some disabled mental gymnastics where crucial industries should be privatized, but the "bad" industries should be broken up to incite "competition". Competition always leads to conquest and consolidation of power, so either accept regulation or follow your vague fantasies to their realistic conclusions instead of this delusion of lively competition benefiting all of us as the altruistic megacorps and trusts put our interests above their profits. Free markets lead to monopolies; get out of this retarded "I want a free market except when it sucks!" toddler mindset.
