"Unshakable Freedom" is a new and fantastic introduction to Stoicism. It introduces the main philosophers and gives practical modern examples of how to apply the stoic principles.

At the end of the book, he recommends that beginners read the main stoic texts in this order:
>1. Epictetus, The Good Life Handbook
>2. Seneca, Letters from a Stoic
>3. Aurelius, Meditations

Meditations is absolutely worth reading, but it can be a lot to swallow at once if you aren't already in the stoic mindset. Best to read in pieces and actually meditate on each idea rather than trying to read it cover to cover.

Enforce competition and break up large businesses into smaller, more easily regulated bodies. Healthcare costs are skyrocketing because companies are able to create local monopolies. Same reason you have shit internet and expensive pills.

Funny I don't see a rebuttal here.
Unless you think that the FCC is doing a top notch job at upholding net neutrality or that the FDA works well to quickly and efficiently test and approve groundbreaking drugs, or has definitely never been blocked by pharma lobbies from approving schedule 1 recreational drugs like marijuana or LSD for medical purposes. None of us have ever heard you whining about that shit on Reddit from all the way over here. Hiding behind muh sources is a smug, pleb tier response to having literally nothing to come back with. >Enforce competition and break up large businesses into smaller, more easily regulated bodies. Healthcare costs are skyrocketing because companies are able to create local monopolies.
Welcome to government regulation 101

You forgot to deal with the unions/lobbies/power brokers. Also a prime reason for the increase in costs is pure graft. Last surgery I had got mis-billed initially as single payer out of pocket. The difference between that and what I paid with insurance? 15% more for OOP; that's average person, no-low-income discount, no insurance, no emergency. Now the billing? 10x what I paid.

Healthcare is the next bubble that's going to pop, and soon. If you're too young to remember the dotcom or housing bubbles, prepare your asshole because this one's going be bad

Oh yea they make less money? Is it because rural areas tend to be conservative? Could they be "voting against their interests" because they are directly affected by the forces of market monopolies, and understand that enabling more and more markets to butt fuck their small town is bad for them? In your 15 years of life experience you probably have never lived somewhere with one grocery store, one bar, one general goods store and one gas station within 10 miles, so you probably don't understand that when you think a price is too expensive you can't just go somewhere else because there is nowhere else. Now imagine that you pay a shitload for something like, making sure you're healty. Are you paying too much? Too fucking bad, there's only one provider and they can charge as much as they fucking want because you just asked a toddler to babysit your 12 year old cousin when you thought you could get the government to properly handle a multi billion dollar industry. Please go lift, if you're lucky you'll start to understand that good things are acquired from you yourself working, not someone giving it to you.

honestly? 4chan for a long time was socially liberal and fiscally libertarian mostly. as the liberal party started getting insane with the social issues, it became basically moderate to have the views old 4chan had, so the only thing left was the libertarian aspect.

now the libertarians similarly went insane into tea party, alex jones shit, which morfed to the alt-right and all that.

thats my take on it anyways.

>>
>>41896332
It did not.

The general population became disillusioned with extreme leftist propaganda and SJW shit. It was all fine when left promoted freedom of thought, speech and diversity. That's what 4chan is about.

Now that the left has decided their propaganda is above free speech, 4chan started to look for a more moderate alternatives. Sadly, over the years the only people harboring any kind of alternative views were the right ultra-conservative types.

So now we are in process of separating the few good ideas and insights they had over the years from the rest of their drivel. Call it a center position.

The Old Man and the Sea is a short book that uses simple language. Very good start to getting back into literature. Animal Farm too.
>>
>>41897862
Animal farm is an arguably worse book than 1984.
AF works great as a neat short summary of Orwell's views on socialism, but its really just that, its missing a proper storyline and character development.
1984 is basically the same story, but more fleshed out and entertaining. It also has some more of Orwell's opinions and fears mixed in.
I'd HIGHLY recommend them both however.

Well i'd recommend starting off with Animal Farm, its more about politics and a bit about philosophy, but its short and damn easy to read.
If you like it, read 1984 to get a little bit of background into what (((they))) are subjecting us to nowadays.
Seriously its scary how well Orwell predicted some of the stuff thats happening nowadays.
To round it off, you can read Houxleys Brave New World.
1984 and BNW are basically two sides of the same coin, with the one showing oppressive suppression of the people and the other the conditioning and degeneration of values.
These are pretty mainstream and easy to read, also not too long so you wont have to worry about giving up.

After that i'd recommend Grapes of Wrath.
Its a bit older and the conversation with the weird accents takes some getting used to, but this is a great book about family, home and how the banks are fucking everyone.

I'd also recommend Lord of the Flies.
Its a nice book about tribalism, the way groups act when left to their own devices and how fast we revert back to seemingly barbaric behaviour.
It showcases just what men are really like when not corrupted by civilization.

>self improvement and philosophy

Avoid all self-improvement. Next to all the writers in the industry are hacks whose only achievement is marketing a book that sold. Funnily enough the best book I've read in the genre was very /fitlit/ - Bernarr MacFadden's How Success Is Won (1904). Besides being an early bodybuilder and health advocate he made untold millions in publishing. The advice is very practical and top-notch. He is however absolutely forgotten today.

Philosophy to philosophy-ish to get your teeth into that won't have you ripping at your eyeballs or bored to death:

>Schopenhauer - Aphorisms and Maxims
>Colin Wilson - The Outsider
>Gustave Le Bon - The Crowd
>Musashi Miyamoto - Book of Five Rings
>Plato - Anything short that interests you
>Carl Jung - Man and His Symbols
>Nietzsche - Beyond Good and Evil
>Macchiavelli - The Prince
>Redbeard - Might is Right

also this

also "the garden of eden," which I'm pretty sure was the inspiration for that really shitty movie "sappho"

"the old man and the sea" is probably the most "pure" expression of hemingway

islands in the stream is another great one

are completely right, atleast based on what i've read out of the stuff they recommended, i wouldnt start with them.
If you havent read a book in a long time i wouldnt recommend starting with the greek or Nietzsche. Not sure how he's translated, but you might want to start with something more mainstream, to get you accustomed to reading again.
Starting with the greeks is (a meme) the equivalent of starting of with 2pl8 after not lifting for 5 years.

I'd swap out "the idiot" or at least "poor people" for "notes from the underground," but that's just me

obviously "the brothers karamazov" is one of the greatest novels ever written and should be prioritized accordingly

Actually, I tell a lie. Grinding it Out by Ray Kroc (the man behind McDonalds) is a biography but it is also inspiring and a very good self-help book.

I really enjoy "A Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley it give's a good parallel to Orwell's views on socialism and shows how capitalism can be corrupted if you forsake traditionalism, and a consistent public view on morality.

Oldfags evolved over time, while newfags are counterculture to social lib lunacy.

Plus liberals tend to boot out anyone who disagrees, so conservatives congregate anywhere with less moderation (same as /d/-tier degenerates, so the combination is weird but appears everywhere there's minimal moderation).

Like in Canada and France where healthcare is free and the percentage cost of their medical industries relative to GDP is less than ours? Certain industries should never be run for profit, at least not without a free, nationalized alternative. Medicine and health care are at the top of the list. Shit like fire departments are up there too. Do you know that trains no longer run on time in Germany? You know why? Because they privatized it, and now shit breaks down or gets delayed as the rail industry cuts costs and increases profits. "But muh free market." Yeah, yeah, every hick thinks he's going to be one of the rich ones living the good life, not one of the poor shmucks spending 50% of his income on water just to keep on living once every industry and resource becomes a private monopoly in your utopian free market wet dream. Somehow you turds always hang on to some disabled mental gymnastics where crucial industries should be privatized, but the "bad" industries should be broken up to incite "competition". Competition always leads to conquest and consolidation of power, so either accept regulation or follow your vague fantasies to their realistic conclusions instead of this delusion of lively competition benefiting all of us as the altruistic megacorps and trusts put our interests above their profits. Free markets lead to monopolies; get out of this retarded "I want a free market except when it sucks!" toddler mindset.
