Is it bad for your knees to be squatting 3x a week?
In my opinion it's bad for your spine and knees in the long term, not to mention any small fuckup can land you in snap city.
Squats are great, but they are risky if you want to push elite numbers.

Yes.
Once a week and 1-2 sets of 5-12 reps with moderately heavy weight is more then enough to get gains and remain perfectly safe.

What do you define as elite numbers? I'm almost squatting twice my bodyweight for reps and I don't think that's even close to "elite".

Squats actually fixed my spine pains. They come back if I don't squat for a long time.
