there's some truth to that though. I used to have legit six-pack abs in college. Now at 35, I'm not fat but I'm not what I used to be. There's no excuse for actually being fat no matter what age, your metabolism doesn't change that much, but it's definitely harder to stay in shape as you get older. Not just metabolism, but injuries catch up with you too so you can't work out the same as you used to. I can't run anymore and can only do light lifting.

They have a lot of functions, especially developmentally and are serious business. An underactive thyroid doesnt just selectively decide to make you fat. These hormones have important functions and an endocrinologist would be most concerned about the other side effects that could accompany a deficiency. You'd also exhibit things like an extreme inability to remain at a warm temperature and often require additional layers of clothing. So when people say their metabolism is slow or their thyroid is underactive, it's nonsense. There is a baseline of T3 and T4 that is mandatory for life. You may produce MORE T3 and T4 for a faster metabolism, but there is no condition that makes your metabolism just halt. Thermoregulation is controlled by these hormones among many other things.

If you want to boost T3 and T4, a healthy diet, exercise, and being cold is the best way to increase production. Being cold can also activate dormant "brown" fat cells, which can also aid fat loss.

I'm also only now starting to drink water again, felt boring and tasteless for a long time and to some extent still does.
Used to have about 2L of soda/day for over a decade, after I cut it out I'd mostly have herbal teas and black coffee (no sugar in either ofc), only now that it's getting quite hot here I'm having more water (usually carbonated/bottled, tap water is hard as fuck here, too much lime)
