Yeah that was atrocious.
Get some decent, midrange bourbon like Makers Mark or larceny on the rocks. If he wants it mixed make a mint Juleps. If you want beer, get some sort of light beer. If he hasn't been drinking he probably wont enjoy the "finer" craft beers.
