>>
Philly cuck here, our soda tax is also on zero calorie drinks as well. Makes no fucking sensem the money is supposed to go to dem programs for urban youth which makes me sick already but in reality it's just more money to pay city workers more.
>>
Soda is unhealthy as fuck, but taxing things always creates loopholes and workarounds. Basically, efforts like these just fight the symptoms and not the root cause. In this case the root causes are laziness, lack of time to exercise, market saturation of unhealthy food, lack of nutrition in popular foods, and low cost of junk food. Higher taxes on one aspect of one root cause will at best have a marginal impact on obesity and health costs. I'm not saying solutions are easy, but this isn't one of them.
>>
Every crime should have a victim, getting fat doesn't involve one and if you think there is then fuck off. Getting fit doesn't have victims either.

Taxing, combined with a shaming company, worked great for smoking in yurop. Of course dealing with obesity is more difficult, since even if you start eating well for once, you're still a 300+ lbs lardass. They should either go full commie (i.e. tax unhealthy food to oblivion and generally pressurise fatties to lose weight) or go full lolbertarian (no gibsmedats and let medical companies set insurance costs based on bf%). Right now it's all care, no responsibility, and that's the worst thing one can do.
>>
>>41824698
Every single person has their version of "not with muh tax dollers"
>>
>>41824380
The funny thing is that these taxes disproportionately effect the poor.

In the US, over 1/3 of people with household income under $30k smoke. While only 12% of earners with over $60k do. The poor spend on average 14% of their income on smokes vs 2% for the wealthy.

Almost none of the tax collected is earmarked for smoking cessation programs targeting the poor.

And the claims that the elasticity response to tax increases is .4 is laughable. Maybe when taxes were only a small portion of the product cost was the elasticity response was .4, but now that the price is so high already, that response is now purported to be as low as .07

Being poor is directly correlated to making bad choices in regards to health decisions. And I would argue that this correlation between income and smoking prevelance is more granularly related to education vs income.

The proposed Illinois soda tax has no earmarks written in to bolster health initiatives or instantiate programs. I'm looking forward to seeing the results of this taxation attempt to see what kind of elasticity response it actually results in.

>>
>>41827426
Absolutely not. But the poor are disproportionately effected by it. That is to say, the effect it has on the poor is significantly greater than the wealthy.

This might be justifiable if the elasticity response is or remains as strong as they purport, but the latest evidence based arguments do not lead to the conclusion of high elasticity any more.

This lower elasticity means the impact of tax increases yeilds less impact on the frwquency of smoking occurances for an even higher financial impact. Again, this may be justifiable if these funds were earmarked to aid in directly impacting smoking cessation in the poor, but this rarely occurs. Instead the increased financial burdeon, whose primary purpose is purported to be the reduction of the incidence rate of smoking, is often earmarked for other unrelated programs whose goal has nothing to do with smoking cessation.

Furthermore some studies have demonstrated that the incidence rate of smoking has been steadily shrinking irrespective of any taxes and that the largest drops in tobacco sales are strongly tied to the instantiation of public programs and education efforts.

My prediction of these so-called obesity taxes that are being put in place will have virtually no long lasting elasticity response and will have no direct or appreciable effect on the intended purpose of reducing obesity rates or diabetes because there is no earmarks for easily accesable public programs and education efforts. Time and time again we are shown across the board that education is generally the easiest and cheapest method to reduce long lasting systemic social problems, and time and time again we ignore this.

Japan has made serious ground on fighting obesity by instantiating mandatory education and consultation programs for the overweight and it is much more effective impact on the problem.

Texas seems to lowkey got some shit going with HEB to make veggies healthier and easier access to healthier food in general. At least in the past years I've noticed that shit getting cheaper and being pushed more and sodas going up in cost at the same time.

Idk if it's legit business or not but sometimes I notice little "liberal" shit getting around lowkey from the government. Like while everyone is anti-birth control on the record there's been legislative pushes for free birth control to lower income women so long as they don't have children already. Plus we're the greenest state and no one gives us enough credit for that shit.

My city there's been a ton more parks and sidewalks built in the past year and I see more people out now as a result. Especially with those free exercise in the park classes.

Obesity is more complicated than that. Someone who is obese puts more strain on society than just their medical cost.

http://stateofobesity.org/healthcare-costs-obesity/
>>
>>41828296
I was being pedantic because it's Affect not Effect in that case.

In the case of reeducation, it's certainly important but educative strategies need to be looked at. One of the best strategies seems to be having a competitive element (who can lose the most weight) with a substantial cost to failing (so proportionate to wealth and income). UK's Channel 4 even did a TV series based around it, very interesting.

I'm somewhat wary of these sorts of interventions tho, as I in the past have been on the receiving end of medical incompetence and could easily see blind adherence to BMI (so a swole tax as well as a fat tax) and people that have gained weight suddenly and temporarily due to a medical condition getting screwed over (I had something similar to cushing's at one point and that wrecked my lean mass and fat mass for about 3 years after getting it sorted).
>>
>>41828995
Because healthcare isn't 100% private in America.

No matter how shit our system is, we will never leave you on the streets to die. Instead we'll pay thousands to keep you alive at the bare minimum when a $30 doctor visit might have saved you and the tax payer from reaching that point. This is why our hospitals are constantly going into the red. Or more closer to home why you see posts on /fit/ about some anon who can't afford to see the doctor and is asking about X problem.

Everyone knows soda is bad. There isn't even a question about it. You'll notice this entire thread isn't about the merits of soda. Education doesn't work, people do it anyway. The same with smoking. There was no question it was bad and taxes were the best way to deter people from buying it.
>>
>>41825405
I like how the revenue projections for the tax assumed nobody would stop buying sugary shit. Fuck these people are retarded
>>
>>41824380
It is not right for the state to levy taxes on products such as soda because some people cannot consume it in moderation.
>>
>>41830641
Same for cigarettes and alcohol? Or does soda get some magical exemption?
>>
>>41830374
Fatties aren't going to stop buying it because it's twelve cents more.
>>
>>41830315
People may have heard that soda is 'bad', but it doesn't mean they can conceptualize its impacts without actually understanding why it is bad (nutritional composition, ingredients, etc).

I doubt most people are even aware of simple calorie counts found in soda drinks, and when they start putting on weight they attribute this to other parts of their diet that could be wrongly perceived to be the lead cause. I mean, how can soda make you fat if water doesn't, liquids cannot make you fat, must have eaten too many veggies last night since they made me overly full, time to cut that shit out.

Even if the person cannot stop drinking soda for whatever reason, choosing lower caloric soda drinks could lead to some improvements.

In general, at least in the EU, I found nutritional education to be lacking in schools, especially when it is introduced as brief part of science classes that mean nothing to kids and may not understand its implications towards everyday life. There may be some students that do indeed extrapolate valuable lesson from such teachings, however most kids will simply gloss it over as part of mundane curriculum and forget about it the next day. Combine it with low engagement on part of working parents that may not have the time/money (thank you taxation) to structure nutritional meals for their kids, and you are left with masses of kids that instead of eating a fulfilling meal will have to keep buying readily available snacks in much larger quantities to keep them full compared to traditional meals/food. Since there is little to no guidance on the alternatives, kids just buy whatever they like and can afford with their pocket money to get sense of fullness.

Add the government under funding sport education in schools on top of this and urbanization of large cities which keeps reducing social places for kids to play at, thus reducing their activity and you can see how we have obesity epidemic on our hands.

Like the other anon said, internalizing something and just hearing "this is bad" is completely different.
"A few sodas a day won't hurt" or "my dad smoked and he never got cancer" are common excuses for people like this. People don't believe in the major scientific paradigms (climate change for example) because even if they are presented with hundreds of lifetimes of data they will refuse to believe it because they conceptually cannot fathom what's happen.

does this apply to just carbonated beverages or all sugared up shitdrinks masquerading as healthy 'cuz lol vitamin c'

also, if Illinois was smart they'd just tax the companies selling it so they're forced to jack up the price. That's the Canadian way.

In burgerland corporations have way more rights as individuals than normal individuals, that's not including their dominance which is built in by capitalism. There's no way Illinois could tax them specifically.

you burgers are literal retards. you tax things that cause issues like soda, fast food, cigarettes and alcohol because they eventually become a burden on society. people who have half a brain will either not indulge in these things often or have some sense with them

if you don't eat fast food or drink soda, this isn't a tax increase for you. since you're browsing this board, this shouldn't be an issue at all. and yeah, everyone is paying for their damage to society because of how brutally fucked your taxation system is, nobody wins and everyone pays.
>>
>>41833896
If the money actually went to healthcare it would be good.

Instead it will probably go to single mothers and refugees.
>>
Honestly a fat tax makes more sense. Plenty of skellies drink soda and eat junk food, just not in retarded quantities.
>>
>>41833909
Again, that's something that should have been dealt with when revamping your healthcare system. Unfortunately 60 years of precedent wasn't enough and niggerjesus decided to wing it and try something new.
>>
>>41833896
>people who have half a brain will either not indulge in these things often or have some sense with them

Clearly, 30% of America don't have half a brain and the states have to step in and help them not be so damn retarded.

There is no reason to start another welfare fund through taxation when these fatties are already recieving welfare. Cut what they get already becore you give the government another pile of money that will be almost certainly be spent in the least efficient way possible.

First of all, Obesity damages society by increasing healthcare costs, forcing people to make expensive things that allow fat fucks to live semi-normal lives, and by increasing tax burden in societies where there is some sort of disability welfare or taxpayer-funded healthcare system. Thus, obesity incurs a cost on wider society that the obese person does not fully feel or pay for. This is a negative externality

Taxes like this serve to internalise the negative externalities, making the individual contribute more to paying off the negative effects of their actions.

Second, these taxes prevent such negative events from arising in the first place. A tax on shit that easily makes people fat stops them from consuming it and causes them to shift to other things. Thus, fewer people get fat in the first place, and less has to be spent bailing the fat fucks out

>>41827385

Soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages have relatively elastic demand, so a 10% increase in price by a tax would cause a reduction in consumption of more than 10%. These taxes decrease consumption more than they increase cost.

This is the aim of the tax, to generate as little revenue as possible. If revenue is decreasing, the tax is working
>>
>>41833718
taxes dont violate freedom of choice in the slightest. the soda companies can easily lower their cost to offset said tax
>>
>>41835294
>Soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages have relatively elastic demand

That's a pretty strong assumption there buddy, soda doesn't really have any true substitutions leading to a fairly inelastic demand. If there were applicable substitutions we would see those items in restaurants right by the sodas. Currently only juice and alcohol really compete, but how much orange juice is ordered at a restaurant compared to coke?
>>
>>41835498
It's not an assumption, it's taken from these two papers. Couldn't be asked to go looking for loads of data or any meta-analyses for the sake of a 4chan post lol

Was going to put links to the relevant papers here, but the spam filter doesn't like it. Google Price Elasticity of Demand for sugar sweetened beverages or something like that and you should get some good results. The ones I found put the elasticity coefficient at about -1.15 to -1.35 on average, with it becoming more elastic for poorer areas.

I'm guessing this is because most soda is bought on-the-go in small bottles, where an increase in price may cause people to get water or something else instead. Can't find any proper data though.
