Yes as a beginner you can still make pretty decent gains in your first year of training.
I didn't want to end up like a weird fatso either, so I went on a diet until I reached a weight I felt confident with.
Now I eat at maintenance and still improve week by week.
It's a slow and steady grind, consistency is key as a newbie.
Don't overthink everything.
