I would say it's pretty rare. I work in a male prison. I'd imagine there's more of that at female prisons. Normally it's other staff like teachers, counselors, food service that bang inmates. Not my prison in particular but just in general.

We train through at an academy. Somewhat similar to police. The starting wage is somewhere around 45 thousand and goes up yearly. You can easily make much more with overtime pay. Some guys have made over 100k a year.
