Don't. I'm on a plant based diet too, and making the same gains as before. On the plus side i feel like i have more energy due to more carbs.

What is /owg/'s opinion on brush vs bang style? My coach is a bit nazi about the brush style (bar almost sliding along thighs and not making a contact sound at all or it's just a delicate sound). Really something like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLiyvZOfA-s&t=154s

I feel like i have more control of the bar this way, but i also feel like it robs some power away because you use hips to a less extent

Then again with more bang i feel like the bar swings away easier, but i'm more snappy and get the bar higher, something like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muoqJ6FzpUk&t=35s

thoughts?

technique is the reason why vardank is so stronk

try pulling the bar in as soon as it leaves the floor and just focus on pushing with the legs and staying over the bar should result in a strong but smooth finish

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtovZkmTjQk
>>
>>41693720
Dunno not the best cue for me atleast. That way it's eays to pull the bar too much in to the hips, causing it to loop away when extending
>>
>>41693777
do no contact muscle snatch, you're still over exaggerating the hip movement if pulling the bar in causes it to go out lmao

beginner often forget that you still act on the bar even when it leaves the hips

matter of fact if your problem is looping try to minimize contact at the moment then slowly reintroduce it once you get good at muscle snatch

on the last clip watch at around :50 how he's not emphasizing the hips coming through and focusing more on extending the legs and elbows up to finish

But i'm not a beginner tho, i'd call myself something like early intermediate

C&J 110

I have no problem keeping the bar close if i extend and drive with quads mostly, but i really miss the power that comes with a little more hip "smash"

Great links and great discussion tho

Well it tends to be like that when it gets heavier. But these guys are fucking tanks, they could just reverse curl the bar up if they really wanted. But they just make it look easy snatching for keks
>>
>>41694206
But it does. Like Greg Everett said:

The snappiest lifters tend to do this, use lot of hips. Try yourself.

Stretching and shoulder mobility. Your wrist pain is most likely not even wrist pain. If your shoulders lack the mobility for the front rack position, your forearms stretch to make it work, which causes pain in your forearm tendons that you feel near the wrist. It's not the wrist at all.

Also rolling your forearms and just above the elbow with a lacrosse ball can help.

stick to low-medium percentages then max out/compete every once in a while to check progress

maxing out and trying to go heavier the day before is how i fucked up my wrists and lots of other injuries that could have been avoided if i had a decent coach who actually cares instead of just FOLLOW MY PROGRAM I KNOW ALL ABOUT IT BECAUSE I USE TO TRAIN UNDER FOREIGN COACHES EVEN THO I DIDNT UNDERSTAND MOST OF WHERE THEY COME FROM

he was a shit lifter himself

yeah just lift lighter and focus on technique and slowly gain confidence, this sport actually takes years and years to get good at. no point in rushing trust me man

this is good advice

I used to try and max every day and I would get injured or burnt out frequently. I have realized now that training smarter produces better results than training harder.

Think of yourself running a race. While you're sprinting with maximum effort towards the finish line, your hamstring tears, and you end up hobbling, unable to continue. Alternatively you could have just jogged the whole way and ended up actually finishing.

This is an imperfect metaphor, but the general point is apropos. Weightlifting is like that race. You're not competing against anyone else but yourself - unless you choose to enter competitions, and even then you're still competing with yourself at the end of the day. You can try and finish as fast as possible, or you can take your time. The result will be the same, the only difference is when.

What you want to accomplish in the sport will probably change over time as well. When I first started lifting, I wanted to be able to dunk a basketball. I achieved that, and then got more into Weightlifting itself, so I wanted to able to snatch bw. Well, once I did, I wanted a 300kg total. Eventually my goal was to out-lift every woman in the world. I still haven't beaten Tatiana, and I still believe that I might someday, but now I am more focused on remaining injury free than anything else.

It is better to be consistent over a long period of time than to be overly intense for a short period of time. I would even extend that advice to many areas of life.

Any suggestions or drills to improve my jerk? No good video of it, so obviously hard to help, mainly looking for general pointers and drills, or is jerks + jerks off blocks pretty much it?

I seem to have trouble getting that real "pop" off the chest. I'm quite bad at utilizing my strength and explosiveness, should be able to jerk a lot more and it's only 10kg ahead of my snatch.

It's a bit hit and miss, when I get it right the bar almost flies up and I have to catch it in a recoil, but when I fail I probably use my arms/shoulders too much/too early. On heavier weights when I don't get it as high my arms lock out a bit bent.

I used to pop it up a bit forward and dive down under it, but it feels a bit better when I really focus on keeping shoulders up the whole dip, down and up.
>>
>>41703127
you basically answered your own question. you have trouble with timing and with the technique of the lift.

it's an athletic lift, and your body has to feel the weight and move with it properly. when you do it right, the bar should just fly up.

watch a slow-mo of the clean and jerk and on the jerk the athlete will be fully extended under the bar with no arm or shoulder movement until after the bar has fully left the body. the jerk is a leg lift primarily, you use your arms to push yourself under the bar.

Rahimov's 214 is a good example of this:

some general pointers I would give:
dip straight, but not too far down
dip smoothly (i.e. keeping the bar in contact with your body, and such that you don't get driven down by the weight, when you go too fast you can lose this contact and you will get driven down by the bar on heavy weights)
drive up explosively, almost as if you were jumping
drive straight
use your arms to push yourself under the bar, not to drive the bar up
>>
>>41702818
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muoqJ6FzpUk&t=35s

Clarence is a great example. Due to your body angle it's easier to turnover. You just get more power to the bar and it's faster to get under when the bar is moving fast

It's not about vertical or horizontal speed. It's about accelerating the bar during the second pull and activating the reverse stretch shortening cycle to snap your body back under.

>>41705699
You don't snap under the bar. The way you describe it makes the movement sound passive once it leaves the hips which is why you think banging helps cause your an idiot

There is not one moment where you are passive once the bar is moving
>>
>>41707493
No, you just think that because you don't understand stretch shortening. The hip flexor reverse stretch reflex shortening cycle is the impetus for driving yourself under the bar during the third pull. It is not passive. Learning to feel and use the stretch reflex during the third pull is the best way to develop speed under the bar. Also the banging vs brushing debate has been doing on for decades now with no conclusion, it's pointless.

So I think I am at that weird "needs to move more weight" stage. I keep catching the bar fairly high in both my clean and snatch. I have had a few people tell me one I start getting heavier weights it will help me learn to get faster under the bar.

Are their any tips that I can use to help expedite the process or is it just practice with heavy weight? One guy told me to "pause" during my 2nd and third pull so my body stretches out more fully then snap under.

I can't really afford a coach but I have been told my form is OK for self taught off the information provided in these threads.

You guys have been incredibly helpful thus far and any advice is appreciated.

>>41710390
Tall snatches and tall cleans will help you to receive the weight in the bottom instead of relying on a high catch. Also drop snatches.
>>
>>41710508
Thank you

I'll look those up once I get home from my wage cuck job.

I honestly just need to get stronger at this point.
>>
>>41710390
Do what >>41710508 said to practice speed under the bar. Remember though you don't want to bomb under as fast as you can and have the weight crash down on you. Part of the skill is learning how to meet the bar at the appropriate height. Another thing that may help is riding cleans down to a full squat even if you catch them high.
>>
>>41710582
Yeah I already ride them down no matter what. People tell me I'm doing ok it's just a practice and getting out of baby weights. I did try to race the bar a few times and it was not pretty.

Thanks for all the help so far

the only problem about maxing is that it blows a hole in your programming. If you feel like maxing and don't mind that hole, go ahead and max on day one.

>What's a good starting point for somebody floating between 90 - 100kg in terms of snatch/C&J weight?
A good starting point would be somewhere between 0 and the world record. You should probably start where you are right now.

I just don't understand how to jerk. Whenever I go above 60kg I feel like I'm pushing like hell with my arms and I don't understand how it's supposed to be a mainly lower body lift.

When I do a clean and I do it half way decently, I at least sometimes get that feeling like everything coordinates and the bar is pulled up way faster than I thought, so I know I'm doing it somewhat correctly, but with the jerk I just feel like a slug.]

I can comfortably OHP 62kg for sets of 5, but I can barely jerk 80 kg. What do?
>>
So i was doing cleans from the blocks recently at around 90%+ and the the bar speed felt horrendously slow.
I feel like the best way to fix this is more heavy pulls? right?

Btn snatch balance. It helps me feel the movement more with legs then you just try and replicate the same feeling of pushing yourself down instead of the bar up when you jerk. Work on your split position too and make that consistent, inconsistent depth in the split leads to press outs make sure your back knee is bent and both legs are equally loaded and in a strong position to support weight

Since the other posters seem to have given shit responses, I'll offer my thoughts.

>How long should a beginner take learning the lifts before attempting to max out?
You should only max out in the sense that you increase the weight until technique begins to deteriorate. As a beginner, this may not be much more than your working weight and that's fine.

>What's a good starting point for somebody floating between 90 - 100kg in terms of snatch/C&J weight?
I don't think I understand the question. I think everyone started with an empty bar.
>>
>>41719105
Try power jerking. It's a simpler movement that let's you focus on leg drive and not worry about footwork.

>>41724991

Are there any trips here or anyone who is decent at the lifts it's kinda hard to trust all anons.

If I can not get a coach right now, who is the best source of information for learning the lifts? JTS? People say Everett is a meme.

Due to low ceiling whilst living back at home and no nearby gyms where I can practice, I may only be able to do cleans and perhaps snatches but cleans are a safer option and wouldn't fuck up my technique.

How would you program for improving my clean and getting a big squat? (Weak squat too 85kg 5rm at 73kg bw) something like dan Johns thing?
>>
>>41728326
>Weak squat too 85kg 5rm at 73kg bw
if your coach drought is temporary just get stronger for now.
>>
>>41728357
I can't get a coach for a few months because I'm poor right now but I was thinking of just recording myself every time and using plebbit or here just for cleans.

I wonder if cleans and just 3x5 squats every session with some pressing will work like Dan Johns thing?
>>
>>41728390
>I wonder if cleans and just 3x5 squats every session with some pressing will work
yeah if it's just for a few months that should be fine. Just accept that you won't develop good technique in that time, and aim for avoiding blunders.
The time I trained in a gym where dropping weights wasn't allowed (mostly ruling out snatch and jerk) I just did a lot of cleans and push presses for reps and consistency, coupled with a ton of strength work, which saved a lot of time later on.
You'll have to do those things eventually so might as well do them now.

Compare it to powerlifters that run dedicated squat cycles and stop benching for two months: It doesn't destroy their bench, and squat goes up.
So don't worry about what you can't do right now, and focus on doing what you are doing well.
