If it's a friendly or neutral dog, show that you are confident and not afraid of them with your body language, and learn to do that without seeming like you're hostile. A quiet, subtle confidence is best. Also let them sniff your hand so they know who you are, it's like a hand shake to them. Now if the dog is mean and threatening, lower and widen your stance a little, like you're going to tackle someone. Do not back off. If the dog starts to go a little closer into your space, push forward a bit too, so that they know that you are standing your ground. Maybe yell at them too. Just don't run. It's actually taught me a lot about dealing with people too. If you can show confidence without looking hostile or like a douchebag, you'll get a person's respect. Getting a dog's respect is very similar as well.

This is a common misconception, dogs are fully aware of how much bigger someone/something else is. Look at a small dog play with a big dog. The big dog knows it's much bigger and plays more gently with the small dog. The small dog knows it's smaller and plays more hit and run than full on tussle.
Some dogs are just cocky/aggressive/naive as fuck and don't care about size difference.
