Can I take nicotine gum on a fast? Or, will this screw things up? I don't smoke I just study a lot and I supplement with caffeine and nicotine to help with retention.
>>
Did a 4 week alt day fast (500cal on one day, around maintenance the next). No lifting. Lost 18 lbs of fat barely any muscle. The first 4 fast days were meh facing habbits more than hunger. 5th fast day (day 10) was brutal. Then every fast day after was easy af with habits gone too. Now Im back to bulking after losing 8% (29% to 21%) bodyfat. Any muscle i did lose was back in the 2nd week and its hard to hit macros and bulk calories cause I feel like Im eating a lot.

Is consuming a protein shake after a work out and nothing else for the day considered fasting? Or should I just cut that shit out to reap these benefits?
>>
>>41614106
Leave a suicide note telling your close ones to notify us on /fit/ so we'll know how long you lasted
>>
>>41614115
Fasting of more than 16 hours has minimal effects on fat loss while being detrimental to muscle loss.

Consuming protein, or a the very least BCAA is very beneficial on days you're working out and I would do that regardless
>>
I've been doing 16:8 for 3 weeks. I haven't noticed any benefits whatsoever and I'm irritable and unfocused while fasted and tired after I eat. Is there any point in continuing with this? It seems entirely detrimental.

Fasting refers to constantly increasing ones speed. It applies to lifting so that your lifts should always accelerate and cardio vise you should increase your speed during workouts.

https://www.strongerbyscience.com/reflecting-on-five-years-studying-protein/

"In 2013, my first peer-reviewed article was published ahead of print in the form of a systematic review on protein intake in dieting, resistance-trained, non-obese individuals. I concluded it with an advisement that such individuals should consume 2.3-3.1g of protein per kg of LBM per day while dieting to maintain as much muscle mass as possible."

You kind of have to go hermit. Since so much of social activity is based around eating or drinking. Getting rid of all food in the house helps as well as avoiding places that pump out lots of smells of cooking. You are an animal and only have so much will power. Even if you got it set in your mind what you want to do you also got to avoid getting into situations where you tempt yourself and lose sight of the final objective.

Problem with fasting is there really is a 2-3 day period you have to go through after you stop eating. Those first 72 hours are hell on earth as your stomach screams to be filled. After that the hunger subsides greatly and it is easy to go long period. Eating again means he has to go though the long weekend hell of killing his hunger.

Is fasting a bad idea if I work a physical job, I'm talking walking 10-12 miles day, lifting heavy shit, tons of body squatting, climbing ladders etc. I'm going to guess yes?
>>
>>41620007
Kind of my problem. When you fast you lose energy at first and a bit of focus. I work a fast pace sales position and I could tell I was sluggish after a few days without food. I felt fine but I know my mind and body were just a half beat behind my actions.
>>
>>41614364

>>
Can confirm fasting is real deal. Not only losing weight, but also actually feeling energized like never - doing cardio too those days despite calorie deficit.

Once you past initial stage of constant urging for food, it becomes extremely easy. The only thing to pay attention to is sugar and potassium (salt) levels in blood so you dont feel headaches.

When I fast for 2 days, my body feels like it will suddenly pass out if I went outside. Every action I make feels so light and unbalanced. What do you guys do on really long fasts? Do you still go to work or do you time them to occur when you are going to stay at home all day?
>>
>>41620295
Retard fasting is natural. Keep eating 8 meals a day fatso.
>>
>>41619534

If I were to estimate, you went from 164 @ 25% body fat to 148 @ 20%. Altogether, this would imply 5.5 lbs of muscle loss in 3 weeks. That's terrible by any one's standards. That totals to 4.5 months worth of natty gains lost in 4/5ths of a month. To compound this, the less fat one has on their body, the faster the rate of muscle loss. If someone were to do this starting near 15%, they'd likely lose twice the amount of muscle mass that you did. You totaled 5.5 lbs of muscle loss with 10.5 lbs of fat over about 3 1/2 weeks - you could have aimed for a 1250 deficit and lost 8 lbs in the same amount of time without the muscle loss and while getting to still eat 1300 kcal/day.
>>
>>41620320
take more salt.
>>
>>41620381
>Altogether, this would imply 5.5 lbs of muscle loss in 3 weeks.
Show your work. It is a common "well known fact" that fasting burns muscle more then fat. I did it and felt even more strength after the refeed then when I was heavier. I am not saying you are wrong but you are pulling shit out of your butt. Need some evidence to follow your input.
>>
>>41620446

Because you don't into basic math:

165 @ 25% = 123.75 lbm - 42 fat mass
148 @ 20% = 118.4 lbm - 29.6 fat mass

Lbm @ 165 - LBM @ 148 = 5.35

These numbers were based on the visual prediction of 25% to 20%. Because you don't have an actual verified body fat measurement before/after, guesses are the closest someone could get.

The average person can only gain 1.5-2 lbs to of lean muscle tissue in the first year of training, 1 between years 2 and 3, 0.5 on year four, and 0.1-0.25 by year 5. Assuming the best case scenario that you still had newb gains to make, you threw away 2.5 months of muscle in three weeks. The average person who's been in the gym for a year and who is starting at a lower body fat around 20 would likely lose 8 lbs of muscle, or 8 months of gains, for pretty mediocre results.
>>
>>41620527

To add to this, of course you felt stronger: you reduced the amount of weight you had to carry around by 10%; walking, running, abd anything else involving bodyweight would become loads easier due to being 10% less heavy. If you had actually been in the gym lifting heavy or doing any other exercises that are directly correlated with strength you would have noticed massive drops in working weight/actual muscle strength. Endurance and Strength are not one in the same.
>>
>>41620320

I'm a bike messenger, I go to work during my fasts just fine. Currently 9 days into my current fast although 3 days ago I ended up having a small piece of toast.
>>
>>41612718
Not a retarded question.

It comes down to personal preference I believe. You wont have the energy to go balls to wall and even if you could you woukdnt be able to consume adequate nutrition for recovery.

Thats unless you're doing IF instead of 24 plus hrs of fasting
>>
>>41619958
>Problem with fasting is there really is a 2-3 day period you have to go through after you stop eating. Those first 72 hours are hell on earth as your stomach screams to be filled.
you can drastically reduce this by being in ketosis prior to fasting
>>
>>41620007
do you have much body fat? if so it should be ok. but to start go on a keto diet for 3-4 weeks, then shift to IF (eating once per day at night). then if you can survive work doing that fasting for longer periods shouldn't be much of a problem. just make sure to take salt and vitamins.
>>
>>41612718

You probably still lost like 3-5kg of fat Tbh
>>
On day 7 right now and i feel super energetic compared to the last 3 days. Thinking I could go another week easily, 21 days might be pushing it. Only thing I've "eaten" is a tums tablet for the fucking acid reflux I seem to be getting. Down 12 lb so far
>>
Doesn't fasting make you lose muscle? Do you take BCAA's?
>>
>>41621764

>torture is ok if its because of religion

muslims get out
>>
>>41619849
a forced meme shilled by energy drinks companies on this very board.
>>
So is 23/1 ideal for a skinny fat guy who is at the 4 months of lifting mark? I'm ready to get rid fo this fat tire around my stomach
>>
Starting my next fast. I took a break after 4 weeks to rebuild some muscle. Going to try and hit 15% BF from 22% by July now.
>>
>>41624987
it's a good introduction to fasting but, depending on how much fat you want to drop, your fat loss might stall after a while.
>>
>>41612718
No do it at night
>>
>>41625091
i did a three day fast a few years back but wasnt lifting and wasnt prepared. maybe another three day is in order? I need to drink much more water this time
>>
>>41613622
>uses BMI instead of weight and bf%
You're a fat fuck regardless, mate. There's no hiding it
>>
>>41613161
>new fag
>>
>>41613760
Stop the bulking and keep cutting, boyo. Bulking is much more rewarding when at a lower bodyfat (you can actually see your muscles) and it'll be easier to cut down from there as well
>>
>>41625321
I'm not hiding it, I said before that I was not obese but that I was fat

why do you use insults? are you mad?
>>
>>41613760
>alt day fast (500cal on one day, around maintenance the next)
>fast
>500cal
>>
>>41612718
Only if it is intermittent fasting
I do 20/4 usually, but some times I eat only one time a day, and I lift hard
If you're going to fast for some days lifting is not recommended, go for LISS cardio instead (walking)
>>
>>41622343
Im pretty sure thats not nearly enough bro.
>>
>>41622634
It was a typo, I meant 14 hours fasting, 10 hours eating
>>
>>41622173
Wrong
>Body needs x amount of calories a day
>Eat x-y calories
>Body takes y calories from fat
inb4 you claim CICO is a lie again.
>>
>>41612423
i've been doing IF where i do 16/8, and i feel healthier and i've dropped 3 kg's (from 87 kg to 84-83 kg) ive been doing it for about a month while exercising pretty much every day and eating about 2k calories a day, should i step up my fasting game or just eat less to get me down to 80-78kg?
>>
>>41614457
wat wat?
>>41614392
>>41614417
Fasting is literally not eating
>>
>>41626108
no your body will just adapt and use less calories
>>
>>41614610
If you're going for days without food, DO take some supplements, stop if you feel bad, and ease into starting to eat again
Supps: multivitamins, minerals, light salt (2/3 potassium)

The bad effects of fasting are only in the first day(s). After the second day or so it is pretty much efortless and you can go on indifinitely as long as you have enough body fat and micronutrients.
>>
>>41626108
>your expenditure is the same every day
>your body tallies up how much you eat and checks it against your expenditure precisely at midnight

this is what you sound like

Guess how it adapts.

Step 1 - Drink more coffee.
Step 2 - Profit.

You get all those benefits and more by simply reducing calorie intake.
>>
>>41622036
Ah, right. So everyone who fasts is stupid. Thank you for this belated reply.
>>

How did you reach that conclusion?

I'd like to feed her my banana if you know what I mean
>>
Okay can someone tell me the safe way of fasting. Im on my second day of eating nothing but water.
>>
>>41625404
no, you're just dumb enough to use BMI instead of bf%
I even forgot what your original post was about
>>
>>41629247
The first thing to do is stop eating water and drink it instead
After that, just make sure you're getting enough sodium and potassium, as well as taking a multivitamin to make sure you don't die.
>>
>>41612423
Your studies are decades old, done with a handful of people, or don't even prove what your are claiming they do.

Fasting consumes both fat but also significant amounts of muscle. Aside from the myriad of health and psychological issues involved, its not even worthwhile to do compared to cutting at 500 cal deficit because of this.
>>
>>41619534
juicing?
>>
>>41620321
Dying is natural too, but I've heard its very disastrous for your gains.
