Start in gradeschool. Schools need to understand that boys don't all have ADD, that they struggle to sit down for long periods of time. Have more "active learning" options, and bring back more recess and field day activities that stress friendly competition.

High school shouldn't just include career plans, but should also have mentoring assignments. Male and female students should all be required to have a mentor in a job they'd consider after graduating. This should be part of the school's curriculum. Once a week instead of going to all your classes, you leave a few hours early, meet up with your mentor, and they have you shadow them at their job.

A lot of this stuff used to be applicable when technical jobs were more glorified. If we stopped stressing that "you can be whatever you dream" and started insisting that kids could actually be plumbers, or electricians and live happily, I think we'd see a lot more men doing better.

Stress that school and academics aren't the most important part of life-- Provide an economy that doesn't depend on the youth having degrees. Degrees for many careers only prove that a person is willing to endure financial and time burdens for a career. It's stupid, but we keep setting the bar higher and higher for most fields.

Essentially, we're failing boys because our economy in America is failing. We're forcing boys to take part of further schooling and a demand for physical and mental obedience. If we could ditch the mounting requirements for a degree and have more available on-the-job training for careers with livable wages, I think we'd see a large improvement in male success.

Problem is that all those issues with going through decades of schooling just to maximize your chances of getting a job, and then not managing to get a job, is ultimately an issue with the availability of jobs. We're simply way past the point of job growth keeping up with population growth, and it's only going to get worse.

Besides the obvious problem of being able to secure an income, we're gonna have to think really long and hard on how to give people purpose. We've kinda abandoned the whole concept of finding a purpose after seeing how capitalism can transform hedonism into productivity through simple incentives. It worked for a while, but then people started being able to live comfortably without working, and suddenly the incentives don't work anymore, leaving us with people who have neither intrinsic nor extrinsic motivation to work.

Either we address the former, by building up our values again, so that people will have a reason to be productive even if it doesn't directly lead to self-gratification. Or we address the latter, by trying to invent new incentives and disincentives to convince people that no matter how abundant society gets, they'll never achieve gratification without being productive. Which I don't see working at all, but it's probably the path we'll be going down for the foreseeable future, since it's what our existing framework tells us to do.

Raised by a single mom for most of my life. I feel relatively normal. Had normal jobs, have a girlfriend, I currently attend university. I do play a lot of video games, and I am lazy though, so I can relate to that part about the video.

But again, social media is standard, and expected in society; if you don't have a facebook/insta/anything people will think there is something wrong with you. I wasn't raised in a single parent household, but my mom was overbearing while my dad was emotionally absent from my life.

I'm like you. I didn't learn half of what I should have learned by my mid-20's. I still feel like a child in a lot of ways since my mom had no idea how to raise me and my dad didn't bother.

Same. My parents got divorced and my dad was an authoritarian hardass, but he was fair and responsible and also showed affection. My mother was mentally unstable and often hit me or started crying or drinking. I was surrounded by women growing up and they REFUSED to let me go outside alone until I was 15, have toys they deemed dangerous or even be alone in the kitchen making food by myself. I slept in the same bed as my mother till I was 13 and it took me a long time to learn how to tie my laces. I was very naive about the world and things most people knew and it severely socially stunted me.
