Anybody have any experiences with surgical fixation hardware for a forearm break?
>broke both my radius and ulna about 2.5 years ago
>had to have the bones fixed in place with titanium plates like pic related
>been lifting for ~1 year, but only got serious in the last 4 months
>left forearm feels like it's straining when I do curls or tri extentions
>fear that metal plates are hindering bone adaptation
>fear it will only get worse as I keep progressing
>Doctor said it should be 100% after 18 months
>don't know if he expected me to be lifting
>removal surgery is expensive and has high rates of complications
What do, /fit/?

Former Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon's Assistant here (seriously): The plates wont bend as much as your bones do under heavy weight. What you feel are the screws digging wider holes as the bone flexes (very slightly).

Dude I have plates in both my wrists, 6 screws each in my palms/wrists, 10 screws and a plate in my left heel. Im busy right now but keep the thread alive and I'll reply when i can

Get back to work Thomas

Will this lead to more problems? If so how do i alleviate it?

What is this meme
>>
>>41534994
yeah. Your body already tolerates the screws, once that shit starts irritating things youre gonna have a bad time.
>>
>>41534922
hey bro is it normal for me to still feel extreme discomfort doing push up a year after I got a rod in my collar bone? Shit still hurts and my scar is ugly as sin.
>>
>>41535024
How do I avoid this without quitting lifting?
>>
>>41534994
It depends how often your working out that arm.

If you do gym 5+ days a week, it could loosen the screws to the point they pop out.

The movement is also creating osteoblasts around the screw's microfractures and could possibly harden the bone more.

Your best bet is to not press your luck. Fractured bones are never 100% when healed and the plates are sadly more rigid than the bone (steel more than titanium, oddly enough).
>>
>>41535042
Get the plates removed.
>>
>>41535027
Clavicle fractures are a PITA to set properly even with a plate. Roding a femur would take us an hour from open to close (usually) by clavicle plating took an average of 4.

It's likely you will always feel that discomfort.
>>
>>41535042
You'll need to get the plates removed at some point. Talk to your doctor. PITA but get it done right and hope for the best recovery possible.

In the meanwhile, and even there after, I'd recommend looking into videos like Athlean-X/Jeff Cavaliere and see if he has any advice for injuries of this type. He makes a lot of content aimed at people that are lifting with pre-existing injuries.

thanks bros

if I get the surgery am I looking at a 5 month recovery period?
>>
>>41535129
Likely longer restrictions on heavy weights than 5 months. Your specialist will know better.
>>
>>41535129
Not entirely sure, in all likelihood you'd probably be feeling quite a bit better within 2-3 months but the full recovery would likely take longer. Once again, follow your doctor's guidance.

I'm sure you're invested in lifting for the long haul. Don't take the next half/full year of being impatient and risk further damaging yourself for the rest of your life versus taking the time to properly heal and move past the injury.

Find low impact exercises that don't aggravate it, and work on mind/muscle connection in the meanwhile. Get to know your body and it's limitations, and then you'll be able to use your abilities 100%.
>>
Wtf, the plates are permanent? Don't your bones heal?
>>
>>41534922
OP here, do those holes get filled in over time or is there not enough stress under the plates to stimulate remodeling? Also, is surgery really the option if I want to continue lifting long term? I've got a fat scar from the surgery and i'm worried about having to get that cut open again.
>>41534949
damn bro thats a helluva lot of hardware. id like to hear the stories behind it
>>41535273
they are permanent in that they are usually installed with no intention of removing them due to the risk involved in cutting through scar tissue to remove them, as far as im aware

Nice to get some useful replies here for once
