I'm doing a 5x3 right now with accessories. My question is about how I should deal with failure on a set. I was benching 175 just now, and I failed on the second set one my fifth rep. Should I lower the weight? How much should I lower the weight? Should I count that set as a set?

What I did is I lowered the weight by 5 lbs, did a set the replace my failed set, and did another to fill the slot for my third set, so instead of going 175-175-175 I ended up going 175-175 (failure)-170-170. Is this acceptable? Or should I have done something differently? And how can I apply this to all my lifts?

Don't worry about "acceptable" - the gym police ain't gonna come arrest you.

This is the setup I use, it works for me, try it for yourself.

Unfortunately all the novice/beginner programs were hard as fuck for me to stay motivated on so I decided to use an intermediate programs cause it kept me motivated. I'm still progressing so right now I'm just gonna stick with it this way even if my progress goes slower.

Except I've made progress this way. Slowly but surely. And when I hit a plateau, I'll play around with my routine and break the plateau. That's how you find the best routine for you anyway.

My setup, the minimum add is 5lbs (smallest plates I have are 2.5). If I make rep target, I add 5lbs. If I BTFO the rep target on the final set, I'll another 5lbs for every 2 extra reps.

As I said, it works for me, not perfect, but reasonable.

Why don't you just rest more. If you can do a full work set one time, you can do it 5 times.

Give yourself some extra time between sets.
