Yesterday I switched from running on the treadmill as my warmup to the elliptical in order to have less stress put on my knees, and now I've got some pretty intense calf DOMS (I do calf raises every other workout and I'd never get DOMS). I also felt a lot more straining in NY quads during the warmup. I think I'll be using the eliptical a lot more often now.
What's /fit/'s take on it? What do you anons do for warming up?
try a row machine instead

Wondering this too. I only ever see women using them but there are two jacked dudes that use them all the time.

I do 15 min on an elliptical prior to every workout in order to "prime" my central nervous system (basically, get blood flowing and wake up my CNS).
Think it's also a good workout for guys that prefer their cardio be low intensity and not take anything away from their gainz (generally lower heart rate than running).

Good for warming up, but like >>41303667 said, rowing is by far the GOAT machine cardio.

I like them personally, since you can set the resistance and make it like your skiing up a hill, the resistance makes it kill your arms and legs in comparison to regular running and its easy on your joints so you wont fuck up your knees doing it all the time like idiots running on concrete
Better for your joints than running, but doesn't actually simulate running
I'm lanky as fuck and ellipticals are hella uncomfortable for me. Doesn't match my stride length or natural arm motion at all, plus I'm a heel-striker from way back
What's the best elliptical routine and posture? I just have my back straight, stride length max and resistance at half. Constant walking pace for 40-60 minutes

So it's good if I don't care about getting better at running, right?
Not OP, I just want something that'll work as good cardio so I don't have a heart attack anytime soon, but I get intense shin splints anytime I run on the treadmill for longer than 10 minutes.

Doesn't the row machine fuck up your lower back long term?
>>41304412
that's a lie propagated by the elliptical lobby. It's bad form that will fuck up your back while using a row machine, not the movements themselves, same as deadlifts, etc...
>>41304412
Unless you're world class competitive or use bad form no. If you're still worried about back you won't have any problems from it if you stick it on a low drag factor.

>that's a lie propagated by the elliptical lobby.
Shit just got serious. Are you saying the elliptical people are spreading fake news?

If you get 'shin splints' from running, you should improve your running technique. In particular, lift your knees up more and try to land on the mid-foot rather than the heel.
But yes, doing cardio that's not running is perfectly acceptable if you don't want to improve your running.
