I gotta start doing more cardio, it's just not healthy. I can barely jog a mile.

I've gotten a lot of mixed info online, can I train cardio like any other muscle? Are there special things I have to do? Should I give it rest days?

I'm thinking I'll do cardio on off days, so I got a jump rope and there's a 3 mile round trail nearby I can run on.

Any general consensus on how to get better cardio?

If you are within normal range of bodyfat and have no pre-existing joint or heart problems then this program is basically the go to for running.
It works perfectly.

If you are over 25% bodyfat as a man and 35% as a woman then you're going to have to start swimming and powerwalking, doing bodyweight squats/wall sits and drop some weight before you can even consider doing it.

Get the hook up on some albuterol, symbicort, and singulair. I've got CF with asthmatic tendencies, so I know that feel. Those are my saving graces for lifting. Take the symbicort and singulair as prescribed, then do some albuterol before the actual exercise. I also tend to take some ephedrine before working out too, and it's helped keep me from coughing my head off during any exercise.

Granted my situation is worse than yours, but these meds are geared for asthma patients too

Try fartlek training, basically sprint for a bit then jog/walk for a bit. Start small i.e sprint as fast as you can for 10 secs then walk for a minute x 20 times, then build it up gradually over a few weeks/months. Probably one of the best things you can do imo.

Literally just start doing cardio and be persistent. Youll eventually get the gains to go longer or faster just keep doing it. Jump rope is tons of fun harder than jogging imho.

After a while if you get bored try swimming, which is fucking hard if you're low body-fat
Cardio can be trained every day, but it's very much a willpower thing and a calorie burner. If you're low bodyfat, eat a shitload. If you're high bodyfat enjoy your ideal body reasonably soon
