Precursor: I'm trying to rebuild my life from the ground up and have *very* little to work with. I have had severe depression for the last 5 years, no courage or self esteem, little to no ability to keep motivated, nearly no friends, no "real" job, very little income (can grow, but it's hard to do when you can barely get out of bed some days.) etc. etc.

I have recently started making progress emotionally and feel like I have enough in me to start the fixing process.

I have a LOT in my life that needs to change, and I decided if I can get into a good physical routine hobby is probably my best shot at starting.

After thinking it over, I would like to start boxing...but there's some concerns, and thus I come to you with asking for advice for the following things:

-what is the cheapest way to successfully get into and learn boxing (properly)
-I'm currently 6'4, 270 lbs (my norm was 220 before SHTF) and basically not physically active at *all*. Can this even be started in my current shape or is it recommended against?
-is there any real chance of me being able to learn and do this by myself or is the only real option to get a trainer?

I notice also there's a lot of "boxing sytle fitness" programs to join in my area, but I'm more interested in legitimately becoming a boxer (doubtful pro, but would be awesome if I can reach such a level) mostly for self confidence and some social growth, with improving my body being a desired, but secondary result. Are these types of places what I want, or do I need to find a "boxing training gym" or something?

If you want to learn it you need to both have a trainer and teach yourself.

Yes you can start learning boxing as a fat fuck.

By a trainer I mean go to a boxing gym and get coached btw, not get a pt at a normal gym.

Concerns 1&3 can be addressed at the same time: you're going to want to find a coach. If you go into it on your own, you're almost certainly going to develop bad habits without knowing it. A good coach will pick up on these and have you correct them before they can "set". the boxing style fitness programs are only worth looking into if they are attached to an actual boxing gym/program; if they're being done out of a commercial gym, it's likely going to be a no-go. As for teaching yourself, that comes a good bit later once you have a good handle on the fundamentals, but until then just listen to your coach.

For your 2nd concern, that's probably something you'll have to figure out for yourself. if the coach you find is worth listening to, they'll ease you into their program rather than throw you in head-first. Even if they do have you doing the hard stuff, just give it your best shot; the coach will see that you're trying and want to be there, which is all they really want from you at the early stages of training.

a few more tips:

-the gym you find might have some gloves laying around for you to use, but it's probably best for you to get your own along with a couple of sets of hand wraps. your coach should be able to help you with this

-a big signal as to whether or not the coach you find is worth a damn is their attitude towards newbies sparring. If they think it's okay to send you in to spar any time before you've got a firm grasp on the fundamentals (on the first day/week, for example), or if their idea of productive sparring is having 2 newbies get in the ring and go full throttle on one another, the coach is shit and you should look for another.

-doing some HIIT on your own along with your training will probably help you out a lot. long runs are generally recommended for conditioning, but I find HIIT to be better since it mimics your boxing rounds better.

-don't neglect your shadowboxing. it's one of the most important aspects of training.

Why don't you pick up the way of the blade?
Care for a little dance?

if you live in a city, there will be boxing gyms in the barrio/ghetto.

mexicans are more surly, nigs are more obnoxious. Pick your poison.

boxing gyms are pretty cheap, usually 20-40 bux a month.

its a fun hobby if you want to get into shape, but its not worthwhile if your brain is worth diddly.

The only thing a pt at a normal gym will do is take your money and bone your mommy.

And they're not even terribly good at either of those things.

>"my body is tempered in battle and harder than the strongest metals. Take this blade and strike lest you see it shatter upon my flesh"
>>
>>41201002
I don't think that's how you use 'lest'
>>
>>41201323
It isn't, my brain farted
>>
>>41201002
not edgy enough, try this

>a lifetime of endless struggle, with countless battles fought, has left me with skin tough enough to withstand even the sharpest of blades. Here! steel yourself and bear witness as your strikes fail to leave even the smallest scratch upon my hide.
