I have been in this situation before a few times (used to work on warrants on occasions cunts would sometimes set dogs on you) and before offering up your arm. I would say you definitely want to build a decent foundation first. Deadlifts, squats, bench, ohp, and barbells rows are just great compound exercises. The milestone to determine that point to start isolating really relies on your body and your goals. If you aren't going for raw strength but more aesthetics and tone you can obviously lower that point.
