Pick any solid rep/set scheme from a weights program, ie 5x5, 3x5 etc

Then find bodyweight exercises that you can only do that amount of reps of. As you get stronger you need to alter the exercises to make them harder or find new exercises.

The big mistake is doing more and more reps instead of moving up to harder exercises.

I disagree. High reps are important. Not doing more difficult exercises are the issue. Do the 1000 push ups but do the 315 lb bench press as well.. or whatever bw equivalent.
