Do your research really carefully, only go to the best artists you can find, look on instagram and read tattoo magazines, attend expos etc

Don't just go to the local artist down the road cus he's cheap and only a 10 minute drive away, it's on your body for life, only accept the best.

If it's something simple and small then yeah, anyone can do it, but if you want something visually stunning that won't fade badly you need to do look around.

Most great artist do travel. You shouldn't be paying anywhere near 5k for the ink. It's the reservation of his time that might cost a little for black and skin tone shaded tats are and old concept so a lot of guys grew up doing it. It's just that since 80% of work for general shops don't involve portraits of fine detail so unless they're sketching constantly it's just not their thing. Concept art is where you find the real good artist. That said it's worth the wait and getting in contact with the person to make sure you're ready to commit to it. For a small fee they'll even sketch up some rough drafts for you. Big tats almost never transfer perfect onto curved/muscled surfaces so it's up to the artist to conform the picture to the person and some have an eye for it some don't

I'm black and about the same complexion as my cousin that has tats on his arms and legs. They simply don't show up well on dark skin. It just looks like an ink smear, and even his tats that have color are indistinguishable unless you grab his arm and look at it to see the detail.

Also most tattoo's I've been interested in, I just save as my desktop wallpaper, and in a month I get tired of it. There have been a LOT of images that I "thought" i'd want to have tattooed on my body but now that I look back i'm glad I didn't

Just because the artist can make photorealistic images, doesn't mean its "good as a tattoo" some of these images you guys have posted as tats just look silly and would look better framed on a wall.

If I had a gun to my HEAD and absolutely HAD to get a tattoo o something, it would be 3D shapes, not animals or people, and it would be in a small inconspicuous area that is frequently covered up.
