Off topic but I've always wondered why a big caloric surplus is needed for strength gains. I get why you need more food to grow bigger and more muscles, but why does it make you stronger too? If I train in low rep high intensity and eat lots of food, I will only get stronger but not more muscular. Why is this?

purely for strength gains, you basically just need to be at maintnence to see strength progress from my experience. Hypertrophy gains are the only thing that requires a surplus. But you need one to get the other, generally speaking. Usually 200-500 is the recommended surplus for sick gains.
