One neat thing to consider is that it is methanol which is turned into the formaldehyde. Methanol is taken up by the liver and converted to the formaldehyde. The liver doesn't then release that formaldehyde. I don't drink diet soda, but I would be worried about formaldehyde getting the brain from your diet coke
