Might work for some, won't work for a lot.
Shoulder joints aren't carbon copies, some people just have more mobility and some don't.
If you can't do the exercise though, you're not missing a lot. Its not that great, stick to regular lat pulldown.

If you want to do lat pulldowns, do pullups as your main and do single arm lat pulldowns to address any imbalances. I do the same thing with t-bar rows and cable rows.
