So I'm about 2 months into the cut and I'm in this weird stage, I'm down nearly 5 kilos but I see damn near zero difference, am I doing something wrong? I haven't really lost any strenght so I'm totally stumped
My routine looks like this
>IF, eat from 1pm to 9pm, definitely in a deficit as I'm obviously losing weight

Interesting fact: Your numbers put you ~10lbs above the FFMI natural limit for someone our height/BF. Typically caps around 170lb (assuming BF held at 10%), which is commonly achieved/plateaued around the four year mark of consistent cumulative lifting and dieting.

So...wrong numbers, genetic anomaly or unsolved mystery? For reference I'm also 5'9 sitting at 164lb, approx same bodyfat (10%ish). Apparently you're 16lbs of pure lean muscle mass heavier than me (and 10 pounds heavier than most men's physique competitors in your height/weight bracket).

I'm down from 200 to 190, I'll see how I look at 175, maybe I'll bulk from there.

True, all three years lifting thus far following hypertrophy split routine, majority of which being ABCABCX.

Diet: I made the mistake of wasting several months cutting from skinnyfat to auschwitz when I should have started either recomping or lean bulking from day one. Like most dyel/normies starting out I assumed abs were synonomous for a good physique. My advice would be *lean* bulk (+300cals over tdee, no more) for the first 6 months before considering any kind of cut.

Routine wise, no, don't do any routine "moderately". Almost every session, especially during newb gains for first 6 months, should result in consistent gains so long as you are actually pushing yourself to near failure, not some "moderate" shit.

At this point you would be getting lost in the minutae if you start worrying about blends vs whey vs casein vs semen etc. Yes there is surely a difference between "optimal" proteins during different times of the day, pre and post workout, etc, but you're talking about veeeeery little difference to a new lifter who's body isn't even used to getting large amounts of protein of any kind. If you insist though, whey (fast digesting) in the morning and after lifting, casein before bed.

Cardio is completely optional and more about heart health. It's calorically counterproductive when lean bulking, seeing as you'll have to eat an even higher surplus to offset the calories you're burning in order to avoid catabolism.

Hey guys, any advice for how to get more defined muscle as a swimmer? I'm planning to start doing full body calisthenics workout every mon/wed/fri and then maybe a 10km HIIT bike ride on the off days for cardio and legs. So my goal is not huge muscle but just more defined "otter mode".

Started lifting about 18 months ago, was about 240lbs before that and I'd never stepped foot in a gym before. Been dieting/cutting pretty much the whole time as I had a lot to lose, finally getting to a point where I'm reasonably happy. Going to get down to 154 then start slowly bulking. I've gone from:

BP 185 to 245 (3 sets of 8)
SQ 205 to 275 (3 sets of 8 - I do this after I run though)
DL 225 to 415 (3 sets of 5)
OHP 95 to 135 (3 sets of 5)

I haven't changed my diet at all.

Will I look ok if I do a cut? Do I have gyno? Are BCAA's a joke or do they actually help? Should I take pre-workout or is that a meme?

Cutting would imply there was ever a real bulk. Naw, just a recovering fatty. Started at 240lbs graduating highschool, gained to 250lbs over the course of my time out of highschool. Early last year decided to change it. Now down to 182lbs, happy to prove to myself that I can stick to this stuff. Actually made some significant changes incorporating some compounds into the routine. If it proves worthwhile I'll post up the changes. The prior routine was more newb friendly with all muscle groups following the same set/rep schemes (4 movements per group, 4 sets of 8-12 reps per movement). That's been changed up a bit with trying to make consistent strength gains on squats, bb ohp, SDL, and (incline) bench.

Damn dude you must be pretty new to /fit/and fitness in general. I'll try being as constructive as possible, you have very little mass so there is absolutely nothing to cut down to. Your body alone speaks volumes about your lifestyle, sedentary, mostly indoors, unused to demanding physical labor and most likely young.

You and the many others like you on /fit/, and even me are naturally disadvantaged because we were not blessed with a strong foundation both in nature and nurture.

The solution isn't easy but it is simple, literally just grind it out in the gym for a couple of years, visible abs aren't all that and even less so in combination without mass or visual proportion, to cut now might provide you with a sense of achievement but I assure you it will be a pyrrhic victory at best once you realize just how far it set you back from the true endgame.

I don't even know if I got baited or not but really guys you should at least bulk/maintain until you reach the 1/2/3/4 standard before considering cutting.

Its a really shitty pic and my front is shitty due to bad fat distibution and gyno.
bulking till 1/2/3/4 is useless if i dont do 2 of them and not neccessary before cutting. If you think you need 1/2/3/4 to be big then you probably started skinnyfat and have issues putting on weight and strength, just like me.
My last bulk in december added 4 pounds of weight over 6 month, and most of it probably fat, and barely any strength.
I dont care about strength and gaining mass takes ages for me, cutting is easy as shit so i use it to look best, as i dont lose much strength in these 2-3 month cutting once a year but look better than a whole year of bulking would make me look.
The reason i want abs is just to have a milestone to reach for, ill probably cut up to 5lbs more and say fuck it then.

Glad it helped anon. Don't get caught up in the belief that your routine has to be maximized for efficiency and perfect in order to make gains. If you do virtually any strength or hypertrophy routine with sufficient volume and progressive overload you WILL make amazing gains so long as you are committed to knocking out every lifting session, not skipping days, not sabotaging yourself with poor/insufficient diet.

I offer up my routine to people who ask for it not because I think it's "the best" way to build a physique, but simply because I know it got results for me. I know there are a million other routines out there I could run to success as well, mine is just tailored to exercises I find enjoyable. Whatever routine you enjoy, that's the one you will actually look forward to and thus stick to and reap the benefits from.

Here's the mentioned routine I ran for the majority of the last 3 years. The only thing that isn't noob friendly about it is the volume. New lifters might fight it hard to not fatigue out before finishing 16 total sets (4 movements 4 sets each) per muscle group. If that's the case, scale down to 3 movements 4 sets each. After a month or two you should be able to add that fourth movement.

I would really appreciate some advice for moving forward at this point, /fit/. Like everyone else and their mother I'd like some more defined abs for this summer season, but I am having a pretty difficult time breaking past my current weight and revealing their true shape. At this point I feel almost aimless and am not even sure if I should remain in this cutting path. Just seems like whatever I do I can't get them to really pop. I've been training my core twice a week for about an hour to an hour and a half each session since last November in an attempt to be ready for summer, but I'm pretty new to this so maybe it just hasn't been enough time? I'm definitely planning on trying to get bigger this fall, but this cut cycle seems somehow harder than the last. Should I not go down as low in weight as my last one due to my increased muscle mass? I'm currently sitting at 164lb and am 5'9". And yes, that is a surgical scar, not an ab line.
