Guys I'm going to let you in on a little secret.

I learned about this when I visited a chiropractor and we were discussing exercises that are damaging to the joints.

Apparently if you choose to run on grassy soft fields and avoid asphalt and hard surfaces it greatly reduces the damage and you get a lot more positives from it. You still want to avoid running downhill, but as long as you're not bothered by repetition, say if you run on a soft baseball field back and forth it's actually pretty nice.

I use to get stiff shoulders and neck problems if I went running for a long time on streets, when I tried just grassy fields there was no soreness.

I guess that's why soccer players can keep running like that and don't have a lot of knee problems (i'm guessing)

The absolute farthest you should run. A mile is better. 8 minutes of harder work that you rest your heart and skeleton after is better than 25-30 minutes of mediocre work, limited mostly by pain in the flesh and bone because there's no rest. But I think there's still value, any more and it's be truly damaging.

There are 2 things I've heard about running I would like to confirm/be corrected on:
>It's bad for your knees
The constant, sudden impact on your knees with will eventually cripple you in old age, which is apparently why so many former runners are now in wheelchairs.

>The body is designed to run/walk efficiently
So it is actually the worst way to do cardio/ burn calories

Makes you think how pathetic we are; those cunts can run over 400 miles in 50 hours. Humans really are "born to run". Why do you think the Greeks sent a man on foot after the battle of marathon instead of a horse.
>>
>>41009076
Maybe they didn't have horses left or they were exhausted? Maybe the terrain was unsuitable for horses? Anyway, a horse-human combo splitting the distance would be faster than a human alone
>>

Yes it will. First off, if you're a /bigguy/, you'll be intimidating enough that nobody will WANT to mug you. It's never Arnie-looking motherfuckers who get taken into an alley. Secondly, if someone does want to press their luck, you'll have an easier time fighting them off if you so choose to. You've also got built in armor. There was one man shot several times by the police in NY I believe, and he kept running away from them because the cop's pussy bullets couldn't fully penetrate his muscles.

Running is great, but it's not an alternative to lifting. It's an addition.

Dude I can run 10 miles at less than 8 minutes a mile. If you are wanting to run a mile at maximum intensity you should be pushing for faster than that.

It's the culture around it. Lots of important feeling desk monkeys run marathons to feel more manly than other important feeling desk monkeys, and a good number of them try to assure their victory/larger penis length using stimulants and pain killers. This then results in them pushing their hearts and lungs way too hard with very little training, and this kills the heart.

I'm sure other shit plays a role like piss poor diets.

>The body is designed to run/walk efficiently

I'm ready to accept the marathon as a proper endurance event, because you could finish it without bringing calories with you. Sure you'll deplete your glycogen stores and experience an epic bonk and run the last 10k or so on fat, but you could do it. A 100mile ultra on the other hand would be impossible to finish without ingesting carbs on the way
>>
>>41023239
What a strange place to draw a line...

I did something similar...in runs up to 3 hours, I don't ever bring water, or drink along the way. I had my reasons.

I'm interested in yours, though.
>>
>>41023317
Well, the actual distance is quite arbitrary. The marathon distance wasn't standardized until the 20's, although it was been raced in the Olympics since 1896. I don't think there's any specific reason to be exactly 42.195km, I just happens to be that. Maybe the early marathon runners considered the bonk after the 30km mark a challenge, I don't know. I guess the Olympic heritage is important and that's why I consider it a proper endurance event.

I haven't run a marathon myself, only a few half marathons and 10k's, and I don't have any plans of trying. None of my training runs have exceeded 25km either.
>>
>>41023239

Sure. But you're talking about just finishing a marathon, not doing it well. You cannot run a good marathon without taking in some calories along the way. Even the pros do it. You can definitely run a good HM without taking anything en route. There's nothing special about finishing a marathon. Doing it well is what matters.
>>
i dont run marathons but im sure its exremely healthy. When humans were hunters and gatherers they ran for hundreds of KMers in one go. And thats what the human body was made for
>>
>>41023496
Lots of marathoners use 'gels' and other calorie sources.

Isn't that where you were drawing the line?
>>
>>41023803
I'm just saying I consider the marathon a proper endurance event because of all the Olympic heritage, that's all. I don't think runners in the early 1900's consumed any gels or even any carbs at all, and I don't actually care if they do that today, it's the longest running event in the Olympics and that's enough for me

>>
>>41024396
Yeah, it commemorates the legend of the courier's run from Marathon to Athens (~40km) and that gives the ballpark for the distance. But why exactly 42.195km, that does seems purely arbitrary, but the rough ballpark of a 40km distance originates from Pheidippides' run

k faggots I'll tell you why

Before 1908 marathons ranged from 40 to 42.75. Nobody gave a shit.

Ok so it's the current year of our lord 1908. Summer Olympiads happen, and it's in fucking England. Now organizer said fuck it, will make the marathon about 40km as usual.

But here come the fucking British officials and said, you know what, let's make the marathon start at Windsor Castle and finish at the fucking Royal Box in the Olympic Stadium so the fucking king and the fucking queen have a good view on who wins.

The course measured 26 miles and 385 yards, or 42.195km.

Now the official distance was set by the IAAF in 1921, but the 1908 marathon was kinda dramatic. No one knows why exactly they chose that distance but this is the word around block

If anyone wins, the race organizers failed.
This isn't a race in the traditional sense, to see who wins, this run is to see where you fail.
It takes a long time to make these humans fail, but it is the failure which deserves 'celebrating' (like blowing taps while you walk away)
