I do about 45min of cardio (treadmill, arc and rowing mainly) and 1 hour of lifting. My main goal is to lose weight and feel good in my skin, I don't really care about being buffed up. Upper/lower split. I started every day with 1 or 2 heavy compounds but I really killed it with the hypertrophy work, you know, that thing /fit/ tells you not to worry about.

Most people have abs and just need to cut. Some people have undeveloped abs. Before I started lifting I was in the same mindset as you and just wanted abs. Did this every second day or 3x a week for about a year:
- hanging leg raises
- plank
- side planks
- mountain climbers
Gave me a good abdominal base. The mountain climbers are the fucking best when you do them right. You'll have to eat at least a little bit though, esp. if you can see your ribs hardcore. You're probably at an unhealthy weight.
Also need to progressively overload. I started doing 30sec planks and when I finished I was doing 1-3min raised-leg planks with weight added. Could comfortably plank for like 10 minutes.
If you're doing all that shit you might as well do some chin ups, pull ups, push ups and triceps dips as well, which is what I did. You won't get swole but I had enough improvement that people noticed in high school with my shirt on.
But ultimately you should just lift. The abs I have now are mostly due to squats, diddys, ohp, on top of the base from that other shit.

Thanks for the post, that's a lot of awesome information. Yes, I am an unhealthy weight, no doubt about it. I am 5'10 and last time I weighed myself I was around 120 lbs. I started eating more, so I have gained probably 10-20 pounds since then, but not really any muscle. I'm at a bit of a disadvantage since I am basically a super poorfag who lives in third world conditions. I have a very tight monthly food budget right now. To make matters worse, I can't eat dairy products (which are the lifeblood of many lifters, cottage cheese, milk, etc) and I also cannot eat peanut products especially peanut butter. This seems to be another huge one for many lifters. Milk/cottage cheese and peanut butter are a huge loss for someone trying to gain healthy weight and get protein. I can barely afford to buy meat on my budget, so I go through about 10-12 chicken breasts a month. That's about all for the meat. I've never been a heavy eater, and I find eating more than I feel like eating to be excruciatingly hard. I find that when I am drinking liquid contents it makes things much easier. It's mainly a problem with solid foods. Which is why shakes are amazing, but I can't afford many ingredients. I thought about mass gainer, but 20-30 dollars for 6 servings is absolutely not happening. I eat rice, beans, bread, chicken in small amounts, and for a shake I have almond milk with one banana and 2 scoops of muscle milk powder (which I think contains dairy, but I deal with it anyway). Even with the muscle milk protein I estimate my protein intake daily is maybe 40g which is terrible I know. I don't even know if I can fix this shit until I get a better job which isn't anytime soon. If I can't bulk or get my bodyweight in protein, is there any use in even trying to lift?
