Counting your calories
>>
List of some stuff you might be doing wrong:

>calculating your TDEE apropiately
>calculating the number of calories you actually consume each day
>not doing exercise

that's it.
>>
>>40959817
this. stop counting calories and start eating zero calories.

Post proof of myfitnesspal tracking all the daily calories and stop lying to yourself "I didn't eat anything else!". Yes you did. Remember those couple cookies? Remember all that butter you used? Remember the 1 glass of orange juice you thought won't make a big difference?

You NEED to track your calories. We as human beans are amazingly talented in liying to ourselves especially dumb people like you. You will never lose the weight just 'eyeballing' what you eat.

Calories in calories out is too oversimplified. Your basal metabolism went down and made your deficit usless.

Also you probably still counted wrong.

>>40959809

One of two things went wrong, or both. Eating at a deficit caused your metabolic rate to decrease. Therefore it did not matter how many calories you ate, your body was going to burn less. This means you were probably feeling like shit the entire time.

The 2nd thing is that you were eating throughout the day. When you eat snacks throughout the day you keep your glycogen stores full and your body never goes into the fat stores to burn energy.

Doctor's got us into this fucking problem. The doctor would tell you eat as much sugar as you want, just stay away from fats. The answer was the complete opposite. The Doctor would say have some snacks through out the day and before you go to bed. This caused your insulin levels to go fucking nuts and guess what now you have type 2 diabetes.

If the doctors were so correct in their treatment plans we wouldn't have the biggest fucking obesity and diabetes epidemic this world has ever seen.

Why would I do either? I typed "how to lose weight" into a search engine, it said "eat less". So I did that and viola, it works.

>>
TDEE is only accurately calculated by comparing weightloss to the amount you eat. Online estimates are a good place to start. But if you haven't lost weight in a month, then you are not in a defecit. If you are counting correctly your now have a more accurate TDEE. Take off 500 calories and eat that.
>>
>>40962406
Look at the fasting thread, calories in calories out is fundamentally flawed and often doesn't work because your BMR adjusts down. There is so much more to it.

Why would you not want to know how your body works? You will be more efficient, feel better and be healthier.

If OP is genuinely eating a 1000 deficit a day and not losing weight, is it likely to be starvation mode?

I can't work out if this is a myth or not. Even if he was in starvation mode, surely the body can't decrease it's metabolic rate to the point where you're under-eating by 1000 cals and it's making no difference?

I'm interested because my TDEE is 2050 and I eat 1200 a day. I workout 5 times a week with a mixture of hard cardio and lifting. I've been doing this for two months and I haven't lost any weight but I've lost several inches.

I know it's working, I just don't know if I'm damming my metabolism by doing this. I feel hungry at times but I can easily manage it and make the most or my workouts. Realistically if I'd been doing this without working out, I should have lost about 16lbs by now but the scale hasn't budged.

You should listen to these people they've done it. Count your calories and be consistent- 1000 deficit every single day- especially if you binge. At least 25% if not 100% of the deficit should come from diet. Exercise machines can be as much as 50% inaccurate plus making muscle gains as well ESP IF YOURE EATING TOO MUCH

Reminder that the underlying factor of obesity is not calories, its insulin, or rather insulin resistance.

Get to know this smart gentleman, Dr. Fung. His argument is that insulin and insulin resistance are the enemy in terms of obesity, not caloric intake. It’s about eating foods that keep your insulin low. It’s also about eating once or twice in a 6 to 10 hour window and then fasting until you eat the next day at break-FAST. This gives the body enough time to clean out the glycogen stores and get to the fat you want to lose.

Fasting has been lost in our culture in the last 100 years. Mainly because you can’t make money telling people not to eat and you can’t sell pills to healthy people, but I digress. Fasting is an ancient practice found in practically all religions. It makes evolutionary sense as well. If you haven’t eaten in a while you don’t want your body to shut down, you want it to rev up so you can get out there and find some food.

The Nobel Prize winner of 2016, Yoshinori Ohsumi, also found an amazing body function called Autophagy. It’s basically a house cleaning mechanism activated during fasting that has profound effects such as preventing cancer, anti-aging, and metabolizing loose skin, just to name a few.

Oh, and worried that you’ll lose muscle mass on a fast? Your body always goes for the fat stores first, that’s what it’s there for. Why chop up the sofa if you have firewood available. In fact, in males, your Human Growth Hormone (HGH) increases up to 2000% while fasting. Source:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1fiGJxkFWU

This thread is for Obese or overweight people who have questions about intermittent fasting and the diet involved.

Here’s Dr. Fungs talk where CICO’s misconceptions are highlighted. Highly recommended.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIuj-oMN-Fk
>>
>>40962994
You realize that insulin is related to CICO right?

Fasting has no concrete proof to be related strictly to fast loss any better ban CICO.

Fat WILL NOT be stored, regardless of insulin levels, if you eat at a lower level than your TDEE and BMR in general. Period. This is the true science. Insulin is important when bulking or eating above your TDEE because insulin relates to stored nutrients, which can only occur if you eat more than you burn.

The fact that ANYONE in this modern age can't understand this baffles me
>>
>>40962994
Someone link the study that showed exercise during a fast had no effect on fat burned compared to exercise after eating. Debunks this entire argument
>>
>>40961657

>Eating at a deficit caused your metabolic rate to decrease. Therefore it did not matter how many calories you ate
>When you eat snacks throughout the day you keep your glycogen stores full and your body never goes into the fat stores to burn energy.

I think I just got dumber reading this, thanks. Frequency of eating has nothing whatsoever to do with glycogen stores, and glycogen stores have very little to do with what your body is burning for energy. Additionally, the amount your metabolism slows is directly proportional to how large of a calorie deficit you've been consuming (i.e. how much weight you've lost). If you haven't lost any weight - YOU HAVEN'T BEEN EATING AT A DEFICIT AND THEREFORE YOUR METABOLISM HASN'T SLOWED AT ALL.
>>
>>40962473

If you're not losing weight then you are not consuming a deficit by definition
>>
>>40963228
Frequency of eating actually does relate to glycogen stores, but ONLY if you've been depleting them, I.E. exercising. Even then, however, those are the stores in your muscle, not from fat.
>>
>>40963241

But how do you work out your deficit? TDEE calcs say 2050, I eat 1200, I think if I dropped this any further then I'd really struggle to workout. How can I accurately found out what I should be eating?
>>
>>40962904
That's why I like the nutritiondata channel, his videos are mainly just lines from studies which you can immediately look up yourself.
>>
>>40963303
If your TDEE is 2050 and you're eating 1200 without losing weight, then you objectively are counting calories wrong.
>>
>>40961669

>>
>>40963352
>In conclusion, the experimental evidence does not support the idea that training while fasting during ae- robic routines is the best way to optimize metabolic control and body composition by reducing fat mass.

Try again
>>
>>40959809
Your maintenance is 1000 calories lower than you thought. Try '1500 less'.
>>
>>40963393
Not the BEST way but definitely a way. You burn the same amount of fat while exercising but you also burn fat while not exercising because you are fasting. It just doesn't give you any "multiplicatory effects". I'm not the guy you originally replied to so I'm not sure how this fits in.

>Therefore, we can conclude that aerobic exercise performance and fasting are two well known strategies that influence lipolysis in adipose and muscle tissue and thereby the amount of body fat mass.
>at low intensities of endurance-based exercises, adipose tissue lipolysis and muscle fat oxidation rate seem to be higher in fasting than in fed state. On the other hand, glucose metabolism is adapted in order to save glycogen stores, possibly through gluconeogenesis activation.
>>
>>40963328

So it isn't a metabolism issue due to me eating that many calories?

I track everything I eat. If I was underestimating, it would be minimal. Nowhere near 850 calories to bring me up to my TDEE.

I don't really think it's possible for me to drop to any less. I often skip lunch (Only because I don't have time to eat) so I'd be really surprised if I could manage 1200 calories in two other meals when one of those consists of meat/fish and vegetables.

Please understand that I'm not trying to be a dick here, I just want to know whether to keep on with what I'm doing (its obviously working as I've lost 4 inches off my waist in two months) or re-evaluate my diet.
>>
>>40963515
start fasting you stupid fuck. it literally circumvents all the problems you get when you eat a reduced calorie diet.
>>
>>40963515
If you've lost inches but not weight, then you're making newbie muscle gains. Or you're retaining water like crazy. Drink more water, eat less sodium.
>>
>>40963531
>says the guy who posted a study literally saying that it makes no difference
>>
>>40959809

Then you're not actually on a 1000 calorie/day diet. You are getting more calories than you think, somehow.

How long has this been going on? If it's only been a couple days, don't worry about it. It takes time. But if it's been a few weeks or more, then see above.

>>40959809
You probably have a high amount of glucose to burn through before you can hit your fat.

Calories in calories out isn't the be-all end-all of weight loss. Weight loss is much more complex than just that. There is a system in which body fat is burnt. To explain further, your body uses up glucose first before it starts to burn the fat cells that your body is constantly storing for use. Fat gets burnt last. Due to this, you have to empty out your glucose energy first, and in order to do this, you must lower your insulin resistance caused by eating lots of carbs. Intermittent fasting also helps reduce your stored glucose, as fasting lowers your insulin also.

TLDR: Try fasting to deplete your glucose levels so that you can start burning the fat.

Calories-in, calories-out isn't everything.

Insulin resistance is very important.
>>

>Calories in calories out isn't the be-all end-all of weight loss. Weight loss is much more complex than just that

No, it literally is just that. Thats how physics works. Thats how fucking maths works. If you are consuming less calories than you are using, you will either a) Lose weight or b) reveal yourself to be an extra-dimensional moon god from outside time and space that doesn't need normal nutrition.

Anything. Else. Is. Bullshit.

If you think you're eating at a 1000 calorie deficit per day and you haven't lost weight in a week or two then you are not counting your calories correctly.

""""""""""Starvation mode"""""""""" or any other bullshit people come up with is at worst made-up or at best might account for the equivalent of maybe a hundred or so calories, if that. A 1000 calorie deficit every day with no weight loss would only be accounted for by fucking magic.

I don't care what people on a Jamaican Pig Catapulting discussion forum do or don't do.

People in my life have noticed me becoming fit from being sedentary skinnyfat and have asked for advice. Five of them have followed my advice (calculate TDEE, make their meals themselves including weighing ingredients, and eat less than calculated TDEE), and guess what? All of them have lost weight. Only two of them exercise. Anecdotal, I'll grant you that. But CICO has worked for me and everyone else who has cared enough about themselves to ask me for help and follow my advice with a 100% success rate.

/blog
>>
>>40964652
Yes it does. Your body isn't some static machine that always used a steady amount of minimal energy to work, it will adjust to a deficit. Everything else would be retarded.
>>
>>40964685
your body adjusting metabolism to accommodate current body mass does not mean your metabolism goes down because of the deficit.
>>
>>40964751
no, but it does adjust to a deficit. haven't you noticed that you feel cold and generally shit when cutting?
>>
>>40964680
It didn't work for me, at some point I ate like several organes/bananas and some yogurt every day without any hidden calories. There were times when I would randomly lose all energy and have to sleep for an hour during the day which I think was because of the huge deficite. Like I maybe went from 78kg to 75 in a couple of weeks. When I started eating way more but exercising it worked a lot better. The point is that it might not work for everybody. And yes I was retarded.

>your body will magically produce more calories than it takes in if you eat throughout the day
>It doesn't matter if you eat only 600 calories a day if you eat 50 of them every hour, your body will give you diabetus and magically make you fat!
>this is what fucking retards actually believe.

When I was skinnyfat and wasn't seeing any weight changes after seven months of gym time and not understand nutrition, I did something stupid and drastic. I did three miles of stairmaster over a half an hour, followed by running for three miles. I did this every day for the month of February, after work. I only ate two bananas, two apples, maybe a dozen carrots, a daily multi-vitamin and fish oil pills, and fucktons of water. I was 180lbs at 5'8" when I started. After the month was over, I weighed 148lbs. Somehow I didn't get sick. No nausea, no cramping, no sudden sleepiness. Maybe I got lucky, I don't know. I don't recommend that method to anyone. But fuck me if it didn't work extremely well. If starvation mode was a thing, I would have been stricken by it after eating 500-600cal a day.

tldr; you need to either work harder, eat less, or be more accurate with your intake. If a clueless skinnyfat manlet can lose weight and educate himself, so can you.

t. no longer skinnyfat manlet

"Starvation mode", if it even exists, would really only just represent "diminishing returns" for increasing your calorie deficit further. It would be physically impossible for it to actually REVERSE your metabolism.

As an addendum I should point out this was February of 2015. I was nutrition retarded back then. That's not to say I'm any kind of expert now. The best part of this whole fitness and health journey is the fact that there's always more to learn. Always.

Well you still had the energy to exercise every day, starvation mode would mean that you are basically unable to almost do anything because all of your remaining energy is needed for survival. It's a meaningless buzzword people like throw around. Maybe you got lucky and I didn't who knows, maybe it's just genetic. I'm not skinnyfat anymore either, rock climbing got me out of that.

I had the energy because I was already wearing it as fat. I spent that energy and now I'm not fat anymore. Imagine that.

Okay I completely agree with what you said. I meant to say that fat loss, not weight loss, is more dependent on other factors besides CICO.

Ahh yes, yet another one of those overwhelmingly common physics defying individuals™.

I suggest *actually* counting calories next time. And no, those juice sips and totally small proportions over time build up.
