Going to sleep is always a wild ride. I get hypnagogic hallucinations, have had them since I was a kid.
When I start falling asleep I see swirling regions of light and dark, or colorful pinwheels like pic related. It's like there's a light source that's making it hard to fall asleep, except it's inside your own head. When I was a kid I didn't know what it was, so I'd always complain about needing a dark place to sleep.
Then when I actually go to sleep I have super vivid dreams and feel very real. They have some partial lucidity where I can direct the dream to some extent, but normally it turns into be trying desperately to accomplish something the dream won't let me accomplish.
