A trainer at my gym interrupted me benching today to tell me that if I keep elbows out nearly perpendicular I'll get better chest development than the ~45 degrees out that Stronglifts shows.
Legit?
Google shoulder impingement videos OP.

just proves trainers are retards
Yes and also great for shoulder destruction.
Just ask boxers who throw a lot of chopping hooks how their shoulders feel

This.
Op, keep 45 degree going down, when you push up, once you get the bar about half-way up, it's good technique to flair elbows a little, but never on the way down or when your shoulder is in a compromised position.

he's not actually wrong tho he'll lift more weight = more strength = more mass
he'll POSSIBLY injure himself over time though

>mfw one of my best buds shilled out nearly $1k for 10 weeks of personal training "for strength" at his new job (he's a stage grunt) he said
>mfw I've been powerlifting for 5 years, and woulda trained him for free if all he wanted was '''stranth'''

I only bench lmao1plaet does it matter?
>>40861942
Yes i fucked my shoulders up by punching people with flared elbows

He's right though. The more internal rotation the more chest recruitment. Problems only come up if your humerus moves too acutely to the bench in that flares position. The best chest pressing exercise is actually a guillotine type press where your humerus doesn't go further than 90 degrees to prevent impingement.

>better chest development
If by that he meant an injury, yeah.
>>40861411
This is right. The whole 45 degrees meme is just for novices to get a happy medium between chest recruitment and shoulder safety but can't get an optimal dynamic bar path yet and are bench light enough that they can lock out without the bar over your shoulder joint. Once you get up to any kind of weight you can't bench like OP was.
