Getting back to the question:

Aim for full extension. This is different from locking out.

The problem is that some people can hyperextend his or her legs, and once you do that, you will get fucked if you have a lot of weight pushing down on you.

These people should not lock out. They should instead aim for full extension, meaning your leg is reaching out as far as possible, not bent in either way (hyper- or hypo-).

One thing that really helps with hyperextension is working on the opposing muscle. E.g. if you can hyperextend your arms, don't neglect curls. Your bench will become much more stable at full extension.

Likewise for your squat, don't neglect hamstrings, although it's slightly different in that you should be having some hamstring activation in a squat anyway.

Lifting stones is literally prehistoric mate.
Round atlas stones are slightly different from natural stones, but they're also a fair bit safer to use and easier to make.
Also lower back injuries like that are pretty fucking rare for them, generally it's the biceps that tear first if you're lifting more than you're capable of.
