Your endocrine system is delicate and does not always return to homeostasis; permanent hpt axis shutdown from taking testosterone is a well known phenomenon. Taking a course of male-to-female hormones (finasteride, estradiol, spironolactone is a common stack) will cause physical changes that won't all go away if you ever stop the therapy.

The long-term effects of inhibiting 5-ar really needs more research. It's not helpful to anybody to completely dismiss the small subset of people who experience permanent changes as a result of finasteride usage.

Personally I took fin for a while without too many issues, but stopped due to concerns over the effect it might have been having on my sleep and my cognition. Inhibiting 5-ar leads to a significant decrease in neurosteroids such as allopregnanolone and fin has been found to severely inhibit hippocampal neurogenesis. Subjectively i feel a huge difference between when im on fin and when i'm off, and i think i'd rather stay off now.

Again, you are comparing bombarding your entire endocrone system with female hormones and stopping test production with inhibiting the 5AR enzyme.
As you are aware it only lowers DHT by 50% and raises test and estrogen by 20%. It is negligible.

Could you provide some source on that? I thought type I of AR was responsible for neurosteroids, which fin does not inhibit significantly.

Progesterone is reduced by 5-ar into 5-a-DHP which is needed to synthesize Allopregnanolone.

Pic related shows the changes in various neurosteroids from 4 weeks of fin treatment. The paper its from is cited on the right. They used 5mg/day but it should be noted that 1mg is almost as effective as 5, so similar effects should be seen with a lower dosage.

Blocking 5-ar is a very dirty approach to treating hairloss. If i had prostate hyperplasia or cancer then absolutely i would use fin, but to potently inhibit such a wide array of neurosteroids for the purpose of vanity is not worth it for me.

Ideally, future treatments should focus on binding directly to DHT rather than inhibiting its rate-limiting step. Equol does exactly this and one of the more promising research groups is experimenting with equol as a core component of their treatment.
